MOUNT OLIVE LUTHERAN CHURCH · ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA · 507-288-1580 · MOLIVE.ORG A Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Holy Week at Mount Olive Palm Sunday Processional - On April 10, we will celebrate our first Palm Sunday back in the sanctuary after two years away with a palm processional! For the 8:00 am service, we will gather to process in from the Gathering Area. Weather permitting, we plan an outdoor procession for the 10:30 am service. All children will be invited to carry palms and lead the procession into the sanctuary as the congregation sings to begin Passion Week. This year, children and youth will be reading the Luke passion narrative during worship. Palm Sunday wouldn’t be complete without a visit from Oliver the Donkey and making palm crosses between services! Maundy Thursday - The Maundy Thursday service initiates the movement known as “The Great Three Days of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection.” In this service, at 7:00 pm on April 14, we remember Jesus’ last supper before his death and resurrection, and we are reminded of the new commandment he left for the disciples: “Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” Worship will conclude with a stripping of the altar, symbolizing the abandonment of Jesus by his disciples and the stripping of Jesus by the soldiers before his crucifixion. A Tenebrae Service for Good Friday - Tenebrae means darkness. Originally, the Tenebrae prayer service was part of the medieval monastic practice of daily readings and prayers during Holy Week. Modern day Tenebrae services replace this medieval practice with one that marks each hour that Jesus was on the Cross with a medita- tion on each of his seven last words. As the service proceeds, candles are extinguished until Inside This only one is left lit, symbolizing the Spirit of Christ that cannot be extinguished. Edition: Congregational Saturday Easter Vigil - This festival service bridges Holy Friday and Easter morning. A service Life of contrasts, we begin outside around the fire at 7:15 pm (weather permitting) and move page 2 indoors as the sky darkens. A creative intergenerational team has designed a unique, multi- Worship page 3 sensory service with music, drama, visual art, creative midrash and more! 4 Channel One Food Bank Volunteer Opportunity Channel One Food Bank provides food for people experiencing hunger in fourteen counties in southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. They rely on volunteer labor for a whole host of activities, from labelling cans to packing food boxes and much more. We would like to gather a crew of Mount Olive volunteers to help with a 2-hour shift in the Food Bank on Tuesday, May 10 (1-3 pm). Here are the requirements: • Volunteers must be at least 13 years old. Service • Standing for long periods of time and some lifting is involved with this position. • Attention to detail is necessary to ensure boxes are packed properly. • Please wear comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes. Volunteering as a group will give you the chance to get to know other Mount Olive members, as well as to know that you are helping address food insufficiency in our neighbors. If you are interested in participating, please sign up in the Gathering Area. If you have any questions about this opportunity or for more infor- mation, contact Michelle Thomsen (michelle.f.thomsen@gmail.com). We need at least 6 participants, but if we get more volunteers than that, we’ll schedule a second opportunity. Channel One Lenten Giving Update As part of our Lenten giving this year, we have been collecting funds for Channel One, and we have been par- ticipating in a Virtual Food Drive. Now through Easter, you can visit this link: www.helpingfeedpeople.org/ donate/virtual-food-drive/support/. Once you have chosen which food items or what dollar amount you would like to donate to the virtual food drive, complete the digital donation form at the bottom of the page. In this form, you will be able to select Mount Olive from the dropdown menu. Upon submission of the form, your donation will go towards the virtual food drive and Channel One will take care of the rest! Please email Carrie Fletcher at carrie@molive.org if you have any questions about the Virtual Food Drive or if you are interested in volunteering. ELCA World Hunger Collection By providing immediate relief to those who are hungry, ELCA World Hunger meets basic needs and recognizes the universal human right to food. They work to connect people with the resources they need to produce food and gain access to clean water, education, health care and sources of income so that long-term, sustainable change can be accomplished. In years past, we have used our Soup Supper collections to give to this ministry, however, we will not be doing those this year. We still want to support this important ministry, so during our Lenten journey, we will be collecting donations. You can pick up an ELCA World Hunger envelope from the ushers at church and drop it in the offering plate or use the Donate Now button on the church website. Thank you for helping us to meet our goal of $750.00 for this ministry. You may continue to donate through Easter. Family Promise Just a reminder that Family Promise is still up and running and in need of meals for the homeless families that are their guests. There are many options--cook a meal and deliver, prepare a recipe card and ingredients so that family can cook it them- selves, order take-out for delivery or drop it off at the house, or donate cash or a gift card for meals. Afghan Family Update 5 The Khairi family has resettled in Seattle, Washington. They have family members there and they decided it would be best for them to move there. They are all doing well and will be in their new apartment by the end of the month. The father, Zahir Shah will be starting to work very soon. We continue to be in touch with the family and receive updates frequently. We have been invited to visit them any time. Thank you all for the donations and prayers for this family. They were very thankful to have been sponsored by Mount Service Olive and People of Hope. We will revisit the opportunity of Community Sponsorship again soon. They also will return to providing family style evening meals from volunteer groups instead of just drop- ping off meals or ordering delivered meals. Masks will be optional for guests and/ or volunteers. If volunteers providing an evening meal are hesitant to be around the guests, the house volunteers on duty will continue to help serve the meal. First Communion Invitation 9 Mount Olive has an open communion table. All are welcome! We believe that the best way to learn about the Sacraments is to participate in them. We call this mystagogy: teaching through participation in the mystery of God’s presence, in, with, and under the Word, the water, the Bread and the Wine. That being said, we understand there is a tradition of first communion and many are more comfortable having their Education children receive communion after attending a class. Pastor Luke is currently meeting with families individ- ually who are interested in this. Please reach out to him to schedule a conversation about communion. On Maundy Thursday, April 14, when we celebrate the Last Supper, we will have a special communion for those that are interested in celebrating this as a milestone. Sunday School in April We will have Sunday School on April 3, between services, 9:15-10:15 am. All students 6th grade and younger are welcome, and we always love when older students come help with the projects. 10 You’re Good and You’re Enough Olive Branch has been enjoying Kate Bowler’s book, Good Enough and its companion workbook. It’s been especially powerful for those of us who struggle with perfectionism. There is perfect love for imperfect people. Kate Olive Branch invites us to pray, “Dear God, help me stop, for I am likely to keep doing all the things I usually do. And in that stopping, meet me there, in the beauty of all your incredible mercy and goodness. Amen.” Psalm Retreat: Processing the Pandemic (Just a few spots open!) Good Earth Village - Friday, April 29, 2022, 7:00pm - Sunday, May 1 noon $195/person (private room) or $180/person (shared room) includes lodging, meals, and a psalm swag bag. Are you ready to talk about the pandemic? The psalms are ancient songs of joy and grief. Today, they prime the pump for us to explore our deep losses and honest gifts. Join Richard BC and Pastor Lisa for an adult retreat to spend time together with the psalms -- singing, listening, games, hiking, a fun movie, and free time in the beautiful hills of Good Earth Village. The design of this event features a Listening Circle structure that invites everyone to share whatever they wish based on a prompt. We'll witness one another's personal expe- riences and support with compassionate attention. This event is part of Richard’s Doctor of Ministry degree. Ukrainian Egg Decorating Party - Wednesday, April 6, at 7:30pm 11 Don’t be chicken! Join us! It’s called Pysanky-- (puh-SANK-ee)-- the traditional art of Ukrainian Egg Decorating. It involves real eggs, melted wax, colorful dyes, and your imagination. Together with Pastor Luke, Pastor Lisa and Richard BC will provide all materials, and teach you this delightful process. We loved it last year, with eggcellent materials coming from a Ukrainian family’s shop in Min- Fellowship neapolis. This year adds the sense that sharing this craft with the people of Ukraine is a kind of peace pray- er. We’ve been working around the cluck to prepare, so if your interest is beaked, all ages welcome! (I know we’re laying it on chick). Based on the difficulty of the activity, we recommend the pysanky activity for ages 9 and up with your adult supervision. For younger kiddos, instead of pysanky, come and decorate your eggs in the ol’ crayon and dunking style. Sign up on the Gathering Area sign-up sheet. This event is FREE, and please be welcome to invite friends. If you desire, we’d welcome a totally optional chip-in of $5/person or $10/family to pay for the materials. Questions? Email Pastor Lisa at lisa@molive.org. And sorry about all the bad yolks. Everyone’s a comedi-hen. Ripe Olives Celebrate Easter The Ripe Olives, Mount Olive’s group for retired folks, will gather in-person on April 8, at 9:30 am. We’ll meet in the Fellowship Hall. Breakfast will be served with a free-will offering. This month, Travis Beck will present The History and Customs of Easter*. Every spring, Christians and non-Christians alike decorate eggs, send greeting cards, and receive gifts from the Easter Bunny. Easter is the biggest festival in Christianity, but what does it have to do with a gift-giving rabbit or decorated chicken eggs? And why does the date change from year to year? From Jesus Christ to the Cadbury Crème Egg, Travis will lead us through the religious, historical, and cultural significance of this holiday, which sells more candy to Americans than Halloween. RSVP for April by signing up in the Gathering Area at church, call 507-288-1580, or email nancy@molive.org. * This will be an abridged version of the course that Travis is doing for the LIFE (Learning is ForEver) program. If you would like to register for his full 3 hour course, visit this link or learningisforever.net/. Monday Book Group The Monday Book Group gathers monthly to discuss a wide variety of literature. We will meet via Zoom on April 11, at 6:30 pm. This month’s selection is Nightingale: A Novel by Kristin Hannah. This unforgettable novel of love and strength in the face of war has enthralled a generation. Author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. If you would like to be added to the email list and receive the Zoom invitation for April, contact Jodi Schoer at mjschoer@charter.net. Men’s Fishing Retreat Do you enjoy fishing? Do you need an excuse to get away, be outside, and enjoy fellowship with other men? If yes to any of these questions, you are invited to join Pastor Luke and Pastor Glenn on Saturday, April 23, at Good Earth Village for some trout fishing. We will gather at 8:30 am for a prayer before hitting the streams. We’ll get the grill going for a late lunch, enjoy a nice camp fire, and finish with a short devotion. Make sure you have your fishing license and gear and join us for what is sure to be a great time together! Please RSVP to luke@molive.org by April 20, so we can plan food for you.
