VOLUME 22: 23 JULY 2021

   HOLIDAY CLINICS
We were excited to put a holiday clinic programme together again for
the second time this year. Thank you to those who joined us for one or
more of the following activities during the first week of the holidays: Golf,
Minecraft, Netball, Cricket, Primitive Cooking, Grasshead Characters,
Arts & Crafts, Red Falcon Racing (Cars & Drones), Mountain Biking and
a day of Great Escape Activities. The children seemed to have a great
time and we have received very positive feedback. We hope to run
another programme next holiday and have already had enquiries. We
will confirm these details as soon as possible.

MATHS!
This week Grade 7s once again experienced that MATH
is ALWAYS at work! In pairs they had to research how
the angle of a javelin throw matters!
• The pupils had to find hiqh-quality videos of at least
   five people throwing javelins.
• They then had to take a screenshot of each throw and
find the angle of the javelin relative to the ground.
• Lastly, they were required to graph and analyse their
   data.

                                WELL DONE, OLIVIA!
Olivia is the youngest participant in
the South African Maths team, and
she was selected for the Western
Cape A team along with 3 Grade 7
                                                           boys. Eva Herbertson was also
selected to represent the WC B
team (go Somerset House with 2
                                                           girls representing!!!)

While they do not usually select
Grade 5 pupils for the team, they
made an exception for Olivia, as
she finished in the top position
                                                           countrywide after all selection tests
                                                           were written.

She has also been selected to

HOLIDAY CLINICS - Somerset House
AN INTRODUCTION TO ANIMALS
In Grade R the children drew and painted their favourite animals in their natural habitat. They loved
making an animal mask, imitating the relevant movements and sounds, with most choosing to wear
their masks all day. It was interesting to see how children chose to sort and categorise a range of
animal pictures, grouping them according to similarities (e.g. Skin covering, habitat, physical features
etc.). Playing the animal memory game with friends was a favourite of the week. Despite the cold and
rainy days, the children had a fun-filled and productive week.

GRADE 1 – WORKING FROM HOME!
The Grade 1 Hawkridge Class have risen to the challenge of working
from home. We have been impressed with the way in which they have
coped with meeting on Teams and listening to instructions. Well done,
Grade 1s. Mrs Hawkridge is looking forward to seeing you all back at
school on Monday.

GRADE 4 ONLINE – WHAT CHAMPIONS!
We are so proud of the effort, enthusiasm and independence we have seen in our Grade 4 pupils this
week. They are certainly growing up quickly and have shown great skills and aptitude in their online
tasks this week. Here is a snippet of some of the activities they have completed.
HOLIDAY CLINICS - Somerset House
The children had to choose a South African athlete and
write a bio on this athlete and a letter to the athlete they
chose to wish them well as they take part in the Tokyo
Games.

GRADE 000
 The Grade 000s were happy
to be back at school this week
in spite of the cold, wet and
rainy weather! They loved
listening to the story of the
‘Little Cloud’ by Eric Carle and
went outside to spot their own
pictures in the clouds.
A TASTE OF AFRICA!
The Oakwood children enjoyed an African taste sensation called
amagwinya. Amagwinya is a traditional hot roll or dough which is
fried in oil and then served with mince or other savoury fillings.
Mark Mullinos, parent at Somerset House and owner of
AfrikaBites, provided the amagwinya for our children, and you
could have heard a pin drop in Mrs Binds class as they tucked in.
Conversations were had regarding different foods and cultures
and the general consensus was – we can’t wait to have
amagwinya again!
OLYMPIC MASCOTS
In honour of the Tokyo Olympics 2021, the Grade 5s set
out to design their own unique mascot for this year’s
games. Since the official mascot of the Tokyo Olympic
Summer Games is Miraitowa, a cheerful character that
is able to teleport, the Grade 5s created their own
Mascots with super powers that relate to helping the
world or the spirit of the Olympic games. Here are some
of their creative designs.
GRADE 3 ONLINE SCHOOLING
There were many despondent sighs from teachers, parents and children when online schooling was
announced. However, we could not have asked for a better week to stay home. All the children were
able to stay warm and snug (mostly still in pajama’s, under their duvets) avoiding the cold, rainy weather
while still having fun with their friends and spending time with their teacher. Well done to all the Grade
3s that worked so diligently on their work packs and engaged online, remembering their mute button
and online manners. The teachers can’t wait to see you back in the classroom!
GRADE 2
Well done Grade 2s! This week we could really see how much you have grown! Some of you even
have new teeth! We have really enjoyed seeing your smiles and hearing your voices again! Well done
on all the work that you have completed. We can see that you have already made wonderful progress.
Thank you for sharing some photos from home. We look forward to seeing more of your Olympic
designs in class next week and we can’t wait to welcome you back.
GRAAD 7 AFRIKAANS

Selfs as dit voel soos winter
jy is nie minder

Daar is lig…
sy is altyd pragtig
Gaan en soek
sy is daar wanneer jy roep

sy dans in die donker met genade
EK voel haar lig kom nader
haar hart is soos ‘n blom in die perfek ligting
My toekoms gaan in goeie rigting

Ek het geleer
Dit maak nie saak hoe donker dit is
Daar is altyd lig

Die Pienk pynappel

Dit is vreemd as jy dink
Hoekom die pynappel is pienk
Dit het ‘n groot groen kroon
En lyk soos ‘n klien boom
Jy kan eet dit as jy moet
Maar pynappel kan wees seer of soet
Pynappel is die tropies van alle vrugte
Dit sal maak jou dag ligter
Meer, meer, seer, seer soet, soet eet pynappel jy moet!

My gunsteling seisoen

My stoomende koppie koffee in my hand,
Sit ek voor die vuur wat brand.
Snoesig in my lae warm klere,
Voel ek soor die artiese ysbere.

Lekker , warm springmielies wat so lekker ruik,
Perfek saam ‘Netfilx en Chill’ te gebruik.
So snoesig onder die kombers se laag,
In die winterslaap.

Verf die wêreld

Verf die wêreld wit en blou
Verf die wêreld hier en nou.
Verf die wêreld so geel en so groen

Verf die wêreld to aandete

Verf die wêreld wit en blou
Verf die wêreld hier en nou
Verf die wêreld so oranje soos ‘n skil
Verf die wêreld net soos jy wil

Die padda

Die padda sit op die wal,
Maar hy het amper af geval.
In die verte skyn n liggie,
Toe is dit al die tyd n miggie!

Plat maak hy sy magie,
Hy moet nou net nie lag nie!
Toe het hy sy tong uit gesteek,
En dit was nou n lekker vreet!

Nou is dit rus tyd,
Tot more weereens hierdie tyd,
Vir n klein miggie,
Wat gloei soos n liggie

Lewe is ‘n skildery

die lewe is 'n skildery
in ‘n kunsgalery
