A strong figure in the history of Dresden No need to bring along birthday gifts for this now long deceased celebrity. Shortly after his death, he was immortalised in the form of an equestrian statue – the Goldener Reiter (Golden Horseman). When Dresdeners commemorate the 350th anniversary of the birth of the most famous of all Saxon Prince Electors, they will rst and foremost be celebrating those gifts that Friedrich August I bestowed Festung Dresden on the city where he had his royal court. Because Augustus the Strong, who was also King of Poland, combined the self-assuredness of baroque rule with an enormous understanding of art and made Dresden a royal residence of European renown. He brought famous architects and Former grandeur restored artists to the city and personally oversaw the construction of many buildings that shape the image of the city to this day. His prowess as a collector is the basis for Dresdenʼs reputation as a city of art and culture. He did not succeed in all his endeavours, of course, but even Even if you think you already know Dresden, you are always going to though his ambition of synthesising gold came to naught, at least the nd surprises in this city. The reconstruction of the Residenzschloss, like many of Dresdenʼs nest buildings a victim of the air raid in February 1945, continues apace. With the reopening of the Paradegemach (State Apartment) consisting of two antechambers, a panelled room and an audience room, as well as the bridal bedroom with its sumptuous four-poster bed, the Royal Palace has regained its centrepiece and been restored to Baroque opulence. In addition, 500 magni cent rearms from the possession of the Saxon electors are to be returned to the Langer Gang, the corridor that runs the length of the palace. The Zwinger is one of the most famous buildings in Dresden. The Kronen- tor (Crown Gate) became the landmark of the city. A new 3D interactive exhibition in Bogengalerie L will be dedicated to the history of the Zwinger since 1719. 2 3
New setting for old masters The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister: Goethe described the building that housed this art collection as “a sanctuary”. The poet and statesman was referring to the Johanneum, the converted royal stables, but around a hundred years later, the collection was transferred to a new gallery built by Gottfried Semper as part of the Zwinger complex. The Semper- Dixieland Festival bau has undergone several phases of restoration since 2013 and is due to be completely reopened at the beginning of 2020.
