It all began in 1936 in the midst of “the worst winter in years.”” TThe he wwhole country suffered in the grip of heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures. A New York feature writer bemoaned the “fact” that, “Here we are in the midst of an old-fashioned winter and there are no red flannels in the USA to go with it.” The local newspaper, The Cedar Springs Clipper, owned and edited by “The Clipper Gals” Nina Babcock and Grace Hamilton answered the writer with a RED HOT editorial stating, “Just because Sak’s Fifth Avenue does not carry red flannels, it doesn’t follow that no one in the country does. CEDAR SPRINGS’ merchants have red flannels!” The story was picked up by The Associated Press and orders began pouring in from all over the USA. Jack Pollock and his wife Ann, owners of Pollock’s Store in downtown Cedar Springs, had a large stock of Red Flannels. They were tireless supporters of the early Red Flannel Festivals and “drop seaters.” Seeing the possibility of at least a few years of publicity because of our famous “drop seaters” and lumbering history, a “RED FLANNEL DAY” was planned for the fall of 1939. The love, pride and support of the community has kept the rich tradition alive! It has continued to be an annual event, held the last weekend in September and the first weekend in October for the 78th YEAR, making it the 15th oldest festival in the State of Michigan! The Festival Board of Directors thanks all of the sponsors of the Festival and the hundreds of volunteers who make this grand event possible! Grace Hamilton & Nina Babcock, Festival Founders Thank you for allowing us to reprint! By Tanya Eldred, The Cedar Springs Historical Society If you have lived in or near Cedar Springs in the last 77 years, you have heard the story of how Cedar Springs became the Red Flannel Town—many times. But do we remember the efforts of the Clipper Girls—Nina Babcock and Grace Hamilton—to get the Red Flannel town on the map? When they answered the wire from the Associated Press, it was just the beginning. Metropolitan newspapers and the radio took up the cause and spread the word. They received a flood of letters from all over the United States and overseas inquiring about Red Flannel underwear. There was much more publicity than they expected. Nina Babcock (left) and Grace Hamilton (right) working on the newspaper in later years. In November 1939, Red Flannel Day was a bright Photo courtesy CS Historical Society. spot in a time of war, when people could forget what was looming on the horizon. That year, the town played host to thousands of deer hunters on their way up north to the deer camps. Merchants and clerks wore red shirts or hunting togs and the town was decorated for event. Five men from Grand Rapids chose the Queen from candidates submitted to the Clipper. After Red Flannel Day, orders for the red flannel underwear were received from as far away as Escanaba and Detroit, and other states such as Maine, Texas, California, Kansas, New York, Alabama, Rhode Island, Florida, and Wyoming, and from Canada and Great Britain. They answered these and news articles appeared in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Kansas City Star, Detroit News and Free PPress, Michigan Tradesman, Atlanta Constitution, Life MMagazine, Readers Digest, Independent Woman, and eeven True Comics. The Kansas City Star sent a reporter tto interview the girls and they were interviewed on NNational Public Radio. The Clipper girls helped persuade a young man nnamed Gerald Ford to run for Congress in 1948. As a ccongressman, Ford attended the Red Flannel Festival 225 times. His bus became a fairly common site on Main SStreet and the girls were always his faithful supporters. HHe went on to become Vice President and then President oof the United States. The Clipper Girls worked hard to establish the Red Two “big-city gals” Grace Hamilton (left) and Nina Babcock (right) Flannels as a symbol of Cedar Springs. Because of their bought the town’s newspaper, The Cedar Springs Clipper, in 1932, and it was 1936 when they put Cedar Springs on the map. hard work, Cedar Springs had become known as the Photo courtesy CS Historical Society. Welcome to the Red Flannel Festival Celebratimg 80 years in 2019!
2019 Rand Ruwersma, of Cedar Springs, has been chosen as Grand Marshal for the 80th annual Red Flannel Festival. Former Festival Board Memeber and Local Businessmen. The Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors has named Cedar Springs resident Rand Ruwersma as the 2019 Grand Marshal for the 80th Annual Celebration, to be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019. “The Festival is extremely proud and thankful for the many years of Rand’s outstanding dedication to the Cedar Springs community and his dedication as a Festival Board member,” said Nancy Deyman, President of the Festival. Ruwersma has lived in Cedar Springs most of his life. He said his parents owned a summer home on Pine Lake when he was young, and they moved here for good from Grand Rapids in 1967, when Ruwersma was about 6 years old. He went to school in Cedar Springs and graduated from Cedar Springs High School. He has also been a local businessman in the community. Ruwersma owned the Cedar Hardware store for five years, with his brother Bob. He bought the Cedar Pub in 2005, and owned that for 12 years. Rand served on the Red Flannel Festival Board for over 8 years, the last several as First Vice President. He also served on the Red Hawk Athletic Booster Board and served as a Cedar Springs Lion for several years, with one term as President of the Lions Club, ”It is very obvious Rand loves The Red Flannel Town and especially the Red Flannel Festival! Rand was instrumental in the success of the Festival from 2006 through 2014. The Red Flannel Festival and Cedar Springs is a better place because of his involvement,” said Deyman. Ruwersma said he was surprised to be selected. “I am happy to do it. As a kid, I never thought I’d end up there, or even on the board,” he remarked. Ruwersma will reign this year, the Festival’s 80th Annual Celebration, over the two weekends of the 15th oldest Festival in the state of Michigan, sharing the Red Flannel warmth of our community to visitors and residents. Red Flannel Day Will Be Saturday, October 5, 2019. Watch the Post For more information about this years activities. 21
