Dear Parents and Caregivers, High Five! Term 1, 2020 I was recently told by a member of our Board of Trustees that the Chinese word for ‘crisis’ is made up of two words. One meaning risk while the other means oppor- tunity. In this global COVID-19 pandemic crisis where the word risk has become all too common in our conversations, it is the opportunities for learning that arise out of the pandemic that will ultimately make us an even stronger nation in the future. The sudden closure of the school site and onset of distance learning programmes was a significant event which should not be underestimated. It went reasonably smoothly, due to the work of many people for whom I am extremely proud. I would like to acknowledge our Board, the Senior Leadership Team and staff, for the way in which they have responded to the urgency at hand. It is times like this, that test our core values and I was impressed by the commitment of everyone to ensure our students were well prepared for a different learning experience albeit, from their Inside this issue homes. Our students, as digital natives, are the most capable and resilient of us all, managing the transition from school to home based learning with apparent ease. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT "How Flash Is Your Writing" Competition Year Level Winners -Term 1 This year we turned up the pace of our creative writing and gave our students the chance to show what they could do. At the start of each term every student from Y9 to Y13 will complete a piece of Flash Fiction with a maximum of 500 words (Y12 - 13) or 350 words (Y9 - 11). That’s not a lot of words to create a story with a clear beginning, middle and end! Every term, students will be given specific criteria they must include somewhere in their story. Each class then picks one story to enter into the school-wide competition and our guest judges select the winners from each year level - and there are prizes! The writing prompt for term 1 was: Congratulations to : Bahar Bayani (Y13), Danielle Gomez (Y12), Kirsty Mayhill (Y11), Hope Milo (Y10) and Liam Beintken (Y9) ● The first sentence must contain a question. ● Each story has to contain the words JAM, JACKPOT and JUNGLE (or an appropriate “s”, “ing” or “ed” version). ● The story has to end with BANG. SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP From Our Head Boy and Girl Another term has passed by very quickly! For the Student Leaders it has been a great chance to plan and prepare for the year ahead before getting stuck in to term two. The first week of school saw our group of twenty seven student leaders shuttled off to Leadership Camp at Waharau Regional Park for two days. While there, we were given the opportuni- Waharau Leaders Camp ty to set our goals for the year and to develop and bond as an effective and dynamic team. Full School Assembly At Top Town, Athletics Day and the Year 9 Picnic we met the great new cohort of students joining us this year and the full school assembly gave Dajian and I the opportunity to address every student and staff member. This term was also special because it marked the opening of the home of Student Leader- Excited to open the new ship – the new Student Leaders’ Office in G-Block! Student Leaders Office. Personally, I have been very pleased with the interest shown in a conservation project I, and a team of enthusiastic students, have been working on. The Howick College Trapping Programme is a first-of-its-kind in Auckland and our aim is to make the local Mangemangeroa Reserve pest-free as part of the wider Pest-Free Howick and Predator Free 2050 programmes. However, like so many events and activities this term, these plans have been postponed until a later date. As is the case with so many things leadership related, you just have to push on through when you hit a wall! A bit of perseverance pays off and the payoff for perseverance often takes you somewhere wonderful! As with all crisis comes opportunity. Maybe this stay-at-home period is an opportunity for a much needed break? Maybe it’s an opportunity to change the way we look at education? There are so many possibilities when learning on a laptop! Ethan McCormick (Head Boy) SERVING OUR COMMUNITY CONSERVATION CRUSADER Mrs Neera Sundrum Mr Richard Henty Day Awardee Congratulations to Mrs Sundrum on Moth Plant Seed Pod receiving the ZONTA International Women’s Day Award at the East Auckland Zonta Rose Day Celebration. Held on Tuesday 3rd March, the ceremony honoured women who have made a positive impact in our community. Moth plant is one of New Zealand’s most noxious weeds and it could very well be in your own garden! It's a woody vine that chokes Mrs Sundrum, an inspiration to our school and our out native vegetation and, with up to 1000 seeds per pod, it spreads community, has worked tirelessly to empower like wildfire. For the past 15 years our own Head of Science, Mr young people at Howick College. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Term One began with a new intake of enthusiastic International Students, excited to begin their New Zealand experience. We also welcomed back many of our International Students after their return from spending the holidays in their home countries. For those students who did not manage to make it back before the borders were closed due to the Covid-19 issues in China, we have been providing access to online learning. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic meant saying farewell to a few of our short-term students earlier than expected. Although there were a few hurdles along the way, we did our best to ensure they made the most of their time with us and we hope they have taken home warm memories of Howick College. Last year, we also said farewell to our Student Administrator, Gudrun Brown, who has returned to teaching and is now working in our ESOL/Languages Department. We were pleased to welcome her replacement, Deb Busch, who has fitted in extremely well. Making the Most of the Great Outdoors Auckland Zoo Trip A number of our students were fortunate to be able to participate in Outdoor Education (OED) and Physical Education Studies (PES) trips, including kayaking, the high ropes course, and sailing on board Steinlager II overnight. These activities enabled students to make new friends and learn about working as a team in a variety of sea and land based activities while at the same time experiencing New Zealand’s beautiful scenery. Another highlight of the term, was a fun day out at Auckland Zoo. In early March, A group of International students got the chance to learn about how and why New Zealand has such unique flora and fauna. The students were treated to an entertaining and in- formative talk from an extremely knowledgeable zoo educator and were then free to spend the rest of the day exploring the Zoo. A highpoint for many was the unique opportunity to see a kiwi up close, as well as enjoying a genuine kiwi-style ice cream at the end of the day! ATHLETICS DAY With a new format that made Athletics Day compulsory for Years 9 and 10 only, there was still plenty of House spirit and friendly rivalry to go around! Students brought their “A” game on the day and dressed up in their house colours. Some real superstars emerged from our Year 9 cohort and we look forward to seeing more from them over the next few years. The whole school turned out a lunchtime to cheer on our incredible finalists and watch the Mascot race and House relays. Thanks to the wonderful team of volunteers who helped to record times, write down results and make the day a success - we couldn’t have done it without you! SUMMER SPORTS ROUND UP TAG FOOTBALL SENIOR EASTERN ZONE TOURNAMENT Senior Girls Team Congratulations to our Senior Girls who played their hearts out to finish on top as the EASTERN ZONE CHAMPIONS. Despite a few tense moments, the team took advantage of their superior fitness and ball handling skills and made the most of some great attacking strikes from ruck play. Well done to Head Girl and captain, Dajian Brown (Y13) whose outstanding leadership and organisa- tion during the past few weeks produced a solid team of young athletes. Over the last two years, Dajian has shown her love for the sport and has played a big part in our girls’ success. We hope she returns to coach our students next year. Special mentions: Shalah-Maye Jackson (Y11) - For her famous dummy. Jaelin Tulikaki (Y12) - For her awesome kicking powers. Edyn Paul (Y12) and Mya Ramsay (Y11) - For their slick side-stepping skills. Their natural abilities of speed, footwork, kick and chase skills combined with their defensive work rate and ability to read defensive patterns, was a joy to watch. They played a superb final, missing out on the win by just one point to Massey High School. These young men, led by Xavier Gray, did us proud! Special mentions: Xavier Gray (Y13) - For his organisation and leadership and persuading his sister, Lasalle, to be their coach! Uate Waqabaca (Y13) - For elusive agility that baffled the opposition. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICE Year 9 Family Picnic and Information Evenings Term 1 is all about settling in for our students, parents and teachers. As we start a new school year, we encourage our parents to begin a dialogue early and stay in touch with your child’s tutor teacher, dean and subject teachers. The school aims to continue build- ing a positive working relationship with our community, particularly our Year 9 families who have just joined Howick College this year. Our annual Year 9 Picnic and other year level Parent Information Evenings, were held earlier this term to allow our parents and caregivers to connect with our teachers and key staff members in the school. We hope to provide opportunities and valuable information to our parents around NCEA, Career Pathways, Pastoral Care and Student Support. Alumni Profile Christopher Luxon Howick College had the pleasure of welcoming Christopher Luxon, former CEO of Air New Zealand and National Party candidate for Botany, back to the school this term. As a former student, Christopher came to Howick College in 1985 in his fourth form year (Y10) after attending Saint Kentigern College as a third former. In 1986, Christopher and his family returned to Christchurch where he completed the remainder of his school years before going on to study at the University of Canterbury. Can you spot a young Christopher Luxon? During his visit, Christopher shared with us his own leadership journey and his strong belief in the importance of building the capabilities of our young people so that they may one day become future leaders capable of facing the challenges of the 21st century. BOARD OF TRUSTEES As I try to write this piece for the termly newsletter, I can’t help but reflect on how much our world has been turned upside down during these past few weeks of school. In early February, our students began the school year with energy and enthusiasm, wondering what 2020 would bring. We welcomed more than 450 new students and staff to our school and all were excited to start their new journey at Howick College. What a change we have witnessed in just seven short weeks. Today we have New staff welcomed at Powhiri over 2,000 students at home doing their learning online, unable to be with their friends, and this looks set to continue until at least the second week of term two.
