May you encounter joy, success, learning and passion in your doctoral endeavor. Professor Alon Rozen, Dean, École des Ponts Business School Executive DBA Program 3
The Executive Doctorate of Business Administration (E-DBA) The Executive DBA is a professional doctoral degree (also referred to as a “terminal degree”) for experienced executives who wish to pursue a degree beyond the MBA, Executive MBA, or other advanced professional degree (e.g. MSc or LLB). In essence, typical E-DBA candidates seek to: 1. formalize, structure, and share their expertise; 2. learn to conduct high-level research to ground their practice in theory; 3. move into a senior consulting role that requires recognized expertise; 4. gain teaching opportunities at renowned business schools and universities; 5. attract professional speaking opportunities in the area of expertise; 6. ensure credibility as a manager of graduate degree holders (e.g. MBA, MSc); 7. fill executive management, consulting, and/or governance roles; 8. work in areas that require doctoral level of mastery based on experience rather than theory; 9. speak and write with increased authority and confidence in both professional and academic settings; and 10. be globally-recognized as a subject-matter expert in a well-defined and relevant area of expertise. The E-DBA is a doctoral level, research-based qualification, designed to contribute to the enhancement of interdisciplinary professional practice in management, as well as to the formalization of knowledge, using information and methods gathered via the practice of one’s career. This formalization often includes the application or development of theoretical frameworks, methods, and techniques, which emphasizes best practices or novel applications of theories to business practices (rather than the creation and testing of theory in PhD programs). What do you need to 1 apply to the Professional experience and École des an “area of expertise” Ponts E-DBA E-DBA applicants must have a minimum program? of 10 years of professional experience and notable managerial experience. In order to qualify for the E-DBA, an applicant must have an identifiable “area of expertise” which is linked to professional experience and/or academic background. Doctoral research must build on or extend the existing area of expertise, and one should not pursue an E-DBA with the idea of developing a new area of expertise not linked to an existing area of expertise. According to the MINIMUM OF Association of MBAs (AMBA), our international 10 YEARS accrediting body, the OF PROFESSIONAL purpose of an E-DBA is EXPERIENCE to allow candidates to: 1. Often However, doctoral candidates may applicants seek to ground their practical knowledge in academic best later choose to write their dissertation practices and theoretical frameworks. Others are motivated by the desire in the language of their choice to share their knowledge in a practical and effective way, in order to further (see page 15). establish themselves as experts in their field. The objective of our E-DBA is to help participants ground their practice in theory and demonstrate how theory works in practice. The profile of applicants is therefore different from that of most PhD programs. In other words, we are looking for “thinkers who do” and for “doers who think”. Applicant Objectives Despite leading busy lives, one of the key objectives that motivates applicants to join our E-DBA program is the desire to be intellectually challenged in a meaningful way, thus contributing significantly to creating a wide range of career opportunities. The E-DBA degree gives graduates the unique opportunity to add the title “doctor” to their curriculum vitae which in turn can lead to many opportunities – speaking engagements, teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs, expertise-based consulting opportunities, roles in governance, and more. For many managers, the E-DBA gives them the ability to lead more efficiently and differentiate themselves from the Master’s-level staff they manage. The E-DBA often opens opportunities for corporate governance (e.g. board member) and strategic roles (C-suite). Many E-DBA graduates discover the attraction of conducting serious research and writing/publishing practical and theoretical articles that can allow them to do a “deep dive” into their area of interest and to establish recognized expertise and credibility. Thus, the E-DBA is also appropriate for applicants interested in pursuing research-oriented opportunities and endeavors in the future. Executive DBA Program 7
CURRICULUM How is the Executive DBA program designed? Rest assured our unique E-DBA program was designed especially for full-time working professionals! We recognize that many professionals would like to pursue a terminal degree like the DBA but the real-life constraints that most people have makes that very challenging. So we focused our initial and ensuing program design on how to offer a professional doctorate that maximizes learning while effectively minimizing the time required away from home and work. The program is thus designed to be completed on average in three years*, although most doctoral students are expected to complete the program within four years. 8
The program comprises two phases: Doctoral Doctoral Student Candidate Phase Phase The first year of the program The second and third years of the program are dedicated to is dedicated to Doctoral Doctoral Research and the writing of the Doctoral Project. Coursework: Research At the end of this phase, doctoral candidates are invited to Methods, Learning and Futures defend their research in a Viva Voce (oral defense). Introduced in 2020 Based on participant feedback, we have completely redesigned the final Residential Session of the program. The week begins with a workshop on defining your Doctoral Proposal which is followed by a Lab dedicated to Futures Literacy. This Lab equips participants with an effective way to think about the future – their own and especially that of their sector/industry/activity. This should help participants to ensure that their research effectively addresses the emerging and adjacent future of their area of expertise, and gives them a new skillset that is immediately actionable in their companies. This final week of coursework concludes with a half-day “Doctoral Proposal Symposium” in which each participant will present their doctoral proposal to all The second and third residential sessions also include classmates and the faculty so that everyone knows what Doctoral Writing Labs to help participants progress everyone else is working on, and can help to provide towards the completion of their papers while in the contacts, supervision, ideas for collaboration, sources of coursework portion of the program and to ensure inspiration, articles, feedback, etc. A celebratory cocktail that they are comfortable writing in a more academic closes Phase 1 of the program. style (something that is not intuitive for everyone). New workshop in 2021 Becoming an Industry-Recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME) In 2021, we will be introducing a new workshop for E-DBA participants to help all future graduates establish their expertise and become known as thought leaders. This step-by-step workshop will inspire, motivate and prepare graduates to obtain recognition and visibility. Using the V-SCATE model (Vision, Strategy, Communications platform, Abstracts, Themes and Execution), the workshop will define the Vision of what type of Subject Matter Expert (SME) the participant will become, and outlines a methodology to get that objective. As part of the Communications component of the workshop, social media themes and creating a personal branding action plan will be covered. Participants will also be given resources for social media posting, securing speaking engagements and public relations opportunities. This is a toolkit for E-DBA graduates to prepare for life after graduation, to identify their thought leadership position and establishing themselves as SMEs. Executive DBA Program 11
Year 2 and beyond The path to success Once all Research Methods modules and Labs have been validated, the doctoral student becomes a doctoral candidate. After the doctoral research proposal has been accepted and validated, each doctoral candidate is matched with a doctoral supervisor for their doctoral project according to the research interests of the doctoral candidate and/or the nature of their papers (qualitative, quantitative, mixed, case study, integrative literature review, dissertation, etc.).
