                              SUMMER FAB: THINKING & MAKING

Course Description
The summer fabrication program bridges and connects the thinking of architecture with making
architecture. Participants experience in a short timeframe all phases of a complete architectural project-
from initial design concepts through development and refinement and including realization as a full-
scale construction on a site. By intertwining thinking and making in the process of design from beginning
to end, we convey an understanding, crucial for designers, that making is a form of thinking.
Project sites typically will be located in Boston, either campus- or community-based. Projects, typically
conceived as temporary, will generally be small in size, scale, or both. They might include, for example,
installations (as within a gallery setting), furniture (including near-furniture or furniture-like elements),
or site-specific interventions (either outdoors or within existing structures).

Program Schedule
• The 4 week program runs from Monday July 9, 2018 to Friday August 3, 2018.
• Move-in for living on campus will take place on Sunday, July 8 (see Residential Conduct, page 18).
• The program is a full day program with coursework and meetings beginning at 9AM and ending at
   5PM.
• A final presentation and closing celebration will occur on August 3rd.
• Move-out will occur on Saturday, August 4th.

Learning Objectives
What does a participant gain from this program?
    • Throughout the program participants will learn visualization skills needed to express ideas,
       resulting in valuable portfolio material.
    • Participants will gain insight into the profession of architecture through exposure to working
       professionals and real world clients.
    • Participants will experience the benefits of a collaborative studio environment.
    • Participants will see first-hand their ideas become realized at full scale.
    • College level credits will be offered for successful completion (D and above. Please see
Wentworth Undergraduate Grading System, page 14).

                                          summerFAB 2018

The overall schedule for the program will be divided into three distinct phases, each with their own
focus and learning outcomes. Daily assignments and readings will support participants in achieving the
goals of each of the three phases of OBSERVATION, ANALYSIS and BUILD.

Phase One
OBSERVATION initiates an intensive investigation and experience of site. Participants experience site by
observing and recording their response to a location, its phenomena, its patterns and its unique
characteristics. Working together, participants measure, map and document the site. Participants learn
valuable basic representation skills and use them to express site observations.

Phase Two
ANALYSIS exposes to methods of design analysis and visual expression. Participants learn model-making
techniques at a variety of scales and materials. During this phase participants are introduced and trained
to use fabrication facilities and to a variety of materials at one to one scale. Prototyping and full scale
making round out this phase. It ends with many design decisions concluded and with an understanding
of design decision-making.

Phase Three
BUILD culminates the program by translating design thinking into built form and resulting in a temporary
site-specific construction. Working with the fabrication coordinator, participants learn the skills involved
with the production and realization of a design idea in built form. This phase culminates with final
installation of the built work on site, and a celebration with faculty and community partners will
conclude the workshop.

Class Syllabus and Structure
While every effort will be made to follow the outline of the published syllabus, course structure and
calendar may be changed at the instructor or coordinator’s discretion. Announcements will be made if
such changes occur. Participants who miss class are responsible for tracking any such announcements.

Attendance Policy
Participants must attend all scheduled course time from July 10 through August 4. Faculty will record
attendance and include this as a factor in grading.

Make-up Policy
Any illness or emergency should be reported to your instructor and the Program Director preferably
before you miss the class, by leaving a message at the architectural office, (tel. 989-4450), or by emailing
the instructor. Written documentation (doctor’s note etc.) is required for an excused absence, and
should be submitted to your instructor at the next class meeting. Extended absence due to medical
issues, family issues, etc. should be reported to the Program Director for appropriate documentation.
Participants who anticipate absence due to religious observance or similar commitments should talk
with their instructor at the start of the term to review all dates in question and develop a plan to meet
all course requirements

                                     RESIDENTIAL CONDUCT

Campus Safety
Detailed information on campus safety is provided during orientation to the program, and program staff
will provide frequent reminders for maintaining personal safety throughout the program. Participants
are required to travel in groups of 2 or 3 always, both on and off campus.

Campus Emergency/Assistance phones are found throughout campus and can be identified by the blue
light at the top of the phone box. In an emergency, participants hit the red button and will be
connected to the Wentworth Public Safety Department.

Wentworth has instituted the RAVE alert system, a service that allows Institute officials to reach all
participants and staff with time-sensitive information regarding unforeseen events or emergencies in
and around campus. The system uses email and text messages to disseminate pertinent information
and when appropriate, provide directions for those in the affected areas.

Where you will stay: Participants in the summerFAB program will reside in the 555 Huntington Avenue
residence hall for the duration of their stay. The residence halls are a 5-minute walk from the studios.
Participants will be expected to check in to the residence halls for the start of the program between 1:00
p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday July 8, 2018. Participants will check out of the residence hall between
9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2018.

What to Bring
If you plan to live on the WIT campus, bring the following items:

    • Bedding
    • Towels
    • Clothing
    • Drinking glasses
    • Bathroom necessities
    • Laundry necessities
    • Toilet paper

Please contact the Wentworth Office of Housing and Residential Life for more information regarding the

Curfew
Participants are required to check-in with their Camp Leaders every night by the assigned curfew hour
and remain on their floor/in their own room for the remainder of the night. Participants more than 30
minutes late for curfew will receive a warning for the first offense, and repeated offenses will lead to
disciplinary action. The Camp Leaders will contact the parent/guardian of any participant more than
one hour late for curfew, and Public Safety will be notified. Participants who repeatedly or seriously
violate curfew will be dismissed from the program.

Following the curfew policy is each participant’s responsibility. The summerFAB program staff will
conduct routine checks of the hallways and front-door area, but they cannot be held responsible if
participants choose to leave the residence hall area over the course of the night.

Curfew hours for the Summer Program for High School Participants are:
Sunday-Thursday: 10:00pm-7:00am Friday & Saturday: 11:00pm-7:00am

Curfew hours may be changed while the program is in session for disciplinary or safety reasons. Any
changes in curfew hours will be communicated to all participants and parents/guardians with an
explanation for the change.

Participants who are delayed and will be late for curfew are responsible for calling the summerFAB
Residential Leader to let them know where the participant is and when the participant will return to the
residence hall. Missing curfew and/or leaving the residence hall after check-in is grounds for disciplinary
action and possible dismissal from the summer program.

Damages
The Institute does not tolerate participants causing damage within the residence halls. Damage results
in increased housing costs, as well as creates an environment that is not conducive to the growth of
community. Participants who are found responsible for damaging Institute property within their rooms,
suites, halls or building will face disciplinary sanctions which include restitution, and/or expulsion from
the summerFAB program.

Unless a specific individual or individuals take full responsibility for damages to a room, suite, or
apartment, each participant assigned to that room, suite, or apartment will be charged for the damage.

Damaged and/or Abandoned Personal Property
The Wentworth Institute of Technology is not responsible for lost, damaged, or abandoned personal
property of participants, including items delivered to Wentworth on your behalf and property located in
your rooms. It is recommended that participants have personal property insurance to protect them
from loss or damage due to theft, fire, flood, vandalism, and any other hazards. Participants should
make sure that the door to their room is locked always and to keep a close watch on their personal
belongings when in public places.

                                                                                                         19

Any belongings left behind after check-out of the residence hall are still the responsibility of the
participant. The Institute reserves the right to remove any belongings left behind from all areas of the
residence hall. Participants wishing to claim items left behind, should contact the Department of
Residential Life at 617-989-4160 within 48 hours of departure from campus.

Participants who are dismissed from the program are responsible for packing their belongings and
cleaning their personal areas of the room/unit. Depending on the circumstances of the dismissal, the
participant may be monitored by summerFAB program staff and/or campus police. If a participant is not
able to pack his/her belongings before leaving campus, the belongings will be inventoried, packed, and
shipped to the participant using a third-party vendor contracted by the Instituteat the participant’s
expense. The Institute is not responsible for any damages that may occur in packing and shipping.

Dismissal from the summerFAB Program
Participants dismissed from the summerFAB program, regardless of the offense, are notified in writing,
and a parent or guardian is notified immediately after the decision for dismissal has been determined.
Participants dismissed from their program are required to contact their parent or guardian to make
travel arrangements at the earliest possible time and at the participant’s expense.

Participants dismissed from their program will be asked to check out of their room under the
supervision of a residential life staff member and/or public safety officer. If a participant or parent is
unable or unwilling to pack their belongings, a moving company will be contracted by Wentworth to
pack and ship the participant’s belongings at the participant’s expense. The Wentworth Institute of
Technology is not responsible for any lost or damaged items.

Participants who have been dismissed from the summerFAB Program for academic, social, or residential
violations will receive no refunds of any deposits or fees. Grades or documentation of program
participation will not be issued to any participant who has been dismissed.

Doors
Except for door tags, all doors (bedroom, suite, apartment, studio, etc.) must be kept free of any writing,
stickers, papers or other things that could create damage.

Participants are prohibited from propping exterior and room doors or entering through propped doors.

Evacuation/Fire Alarms
In the event of an emergency, fire alarm or at the request of a Wentworth or summerFAB official, all
participants must leave the building and not re-enter until authorized by a Boston Fire Department or
Wentworth official. Failure to leave the building during a fire alarm may result in disciplinary
action. Emergency instructions can be found on the interior of your residence hall room door.

Emergency exits should be used only in case of emergency building evacuation. The use of emergency
exits in non-emergency situations will result in disciplinary action.

                                                                                                             20

Failure to Comply with Administrative Action
Members of the summerFAB Program and Wentworth Institute of Technology staff are charged with
maintaining environments conducive to living and learning. Staff members may take immediate action in
response to a given situation. The instructions of a staff member acting in the fulfillment of his or her
duties are to be followed. Failure to comply with these instructions is a serious breach of conduct and
will result in disciplinary action.

Fire Safety Violations
Any item that produces flames or has an open heating element (i.e. candles, incense, halogen lamps,
charcoal, lighter fluid, gasoline/kerosene and their containers) are strictly prohibited and will be
confiscated, incurring an automatic $25.00 fine. "Hoverboards" are also stricly prohibited within the
campus residence halls and will be confiscated.

Only electrical appliances and equipment that have the mark of an approved testing laboratory (i.e.UL,
FM) may be used. All ceiling hangings, oversized wall hangings and any overloaded electrical sockets are
also considered fire hazards and participants will be given a short time to remedy these violations. All
participants in a room share in the violations unless an individual participant takes responsibility for the
violation.

Under no circumstances may participants perform any electrical wiring or welding within their
room/suite/apartment. If a participant has an electrical concern, he/she must contact their Camp Leader
or Conference Assistant and Residential Life to submit a work order.

Guest/Visitor Policy
Participants in the Summer Programs will not be permitted guests or visitors in the residence hall,
classrooms, or any other facility on campus without public access. Participants will not be permitted to
invite visitors into the residence halls or on any of the excursions or side-trips. Parents and family
members will be permitted to assist participants on move-in and move-out day only.

Participants in Summer Programs may not be guests or present in any other Wentworth residence halls
on campus.

Hall Sports
Due to possible injury to a bystander or damage to the facilities, hall sports of any kind are not
permitted. The use of roller blades, bikes, skateboards, hoverboards, and scooters is also prohibited
within the residence halls. Participants responsible for violating this policy may face disciplinary action.

Health and Safety Inspections
The Conference Assistants will conduct periodic Health and Safety Inspections of the Residence Halls.
These inspections can occur at any time and consist of a visual assessment of the rooms to check for
items that are not permitted in the residence halls. If the following items are found in a room they will

the participants and will simply be disposed of.

Intentional Destruction of Institute Property Policy
The Institute will not tolerate the intentional destruction of property and any intentional or
unintentional theft, damage or destruction of property is a violation of the Personal Conduct section of
the Participant Code of Conduct. A participant should assume that an incident that is determined to be
intentional destruction, such as, but not limited to, graffiti, tagging, or tampering with elevators, may
result in disciplinary sanctions up to and including housing suspension.

Leaving Campus Overnight
Participants may not be away from the Wentworth Campus overnight without permission. Participants
who need to be away from campus overnight or on weekends due to a family obligation can only be
signed out by a parent/guardian through an Overnight Leave Form. The Overnight Leave Form must be
filed for each instance two (2) days in advance and must include a detailed time of departure,
destination, expected time of return and emergency contact information. [Note: This policy is not
intended for participants to stay out after curfew. Participants who do not have permission to leave
campus overnight will be treated as a missing person.]

Pets
Summer program participants are not permitted to have pets.

Proper Use of Facilities
Participants are prohibited from using WIT residential facilities or resources for commercial activity such
as creating products or services for sale.

Quiet Hours
Participants in the Summer Program are focused on the academic experience, so residence halls will
maintain strict quiet hours so participants have a productive and distraction-free space to study, work
on their class assignments, and get a good night’s sleep.
The following hours will be held as quiet hours:
Sunday – Thursday: 10:00 pm until 8:00 am
Friday & Saturday: 12:00 am until 9:00 am

Right of Entry
The Institute reserves the right to inspect any room. In addition, the Residential Life staff have the right
to enter the premises at any time for any reasonable cause to take those precautions that they find
necessary to protect the health and safety of the occupants or other persons therein and to enforce
Institute policy. Members of the Physical Plant staff and Public Safety officers routinely enter rooms in
the performance of their duties or at times of safety or emergency.

                                                                                                           22

The Residential Life staff shall have the right to conduct health and safety inspections of all participant
rooms at any time. The staff shall have the right to enter the premises at a reasonable hour in the day or
evening, to make such requests for repairs, additions, or alterations as deemed necessary. Notification
of inspection time and date need not be posted.

Right to Search
When Wentworth officials have reason to suspect that a violation of Institute policy is occurring, they
reserve the right to investigate the situation and confiscate evidence of such violations. In addition, they
may search a participant's person, motor vehicle, back packs, bags, assigned workspaces and room,
including refrigerators, closets, desks, and large bags or boxes. Material evidence, such as alcoholic
beverages and containers, drug paraphernalia, suspicious odors, disruptive behavior, or behavior which
is suspect, will generally be considered grounds for such a search. Confiscated evidence will then be
used in disciplinary proceedings. It also should be noted that federal, commonwealth, and local officials
may exercise their legitimate authority to conduct searches on campus without the consent of the
Institute.

Room Assignments & Changes
Residential participants will stay in apartment-style rooms, and each unit includes a kitchen and private
bathrooms, though stoves will not be functional. Participants should bring their own sheets, towels, and
other linens with them to the program. Participants are randomly assigned to a double space within a
residential suite. Roommate requests will be considered but are not guaranteed. Only residential
participants enrolled in the Summer Programs are permitted to reside in the residence hall. Participants
must sleep in the room they are assigned to. Participants with a documented disability fill out the
summerFAB Accommodations Form and send it in following the directions on the form.

For security and emergency purposes, participants will not be allowed to change rooms within the first
24 hours of the official start of the program. The Program Directors may authorize a room change or
swap after the end of the first full day of the program. Room changes are not guaranteed.

Room Keys (Lock-outs, lost keys/ID, key return/lost keys)
Rooms assigned to summer program participants will use key-card access in place of actual keys. It is
the responsibility of the participant to always be in possession of his/her Wentworth ID card.
The summerFAB Program Director(s) will have a master key in the place of lockouts, and while there is
no charge for lockouts, repeat offenders may face disciplinary action. Lost Wentworth ID cards must be
replaced as soon as possible, during normal business hours, at the Copy/Mail Center located in
Wentworth Hall. The replacement for the Wentworth ID card will result in a $15 replacement fee.

Roommates
Room placements are randomly assigned so participants will have the opportunity to meet new people
and build friendships. Roommate requests will be considered but are not guaranteed. Special-needs
roommate requests for participants with a documented disability will be honored. Please provide as

much advance notice as possible and complete the summerFAB Accommodations Form and send it in
following the directions on the form.

Since all participants will be sharing a room, it is important that each participant respect the rights and
privacy of their roommates. These rights include, but are not limited to, the right to use the space of
room and its facilities, the right to privacy and to abiding by the quiet hours and curfew policies. Any
difficulties between roommates should be directed to the Conference Assistants responsible for your
floor/unit. If roommate difficulties cannot be resolved, participants are encouraged to seek assistance
from the Camp Leaders or Conference Assistants.

Room Configuration
All bedroom, common area and kitchen furniture provided by the Institute must remain in the room
intact and must not be modified or re-configured. A clear path to doors must be maintained at all
times.

Walls and Ceilings
Nothing can be placed on or suspended from the ceilings. Approved wall decorations are allowed but
must be attached in such a way as to not mark or damage the surfaces. Putties and non-damaging
adhesive strips are available in most office and school supply stores. Duct tape should never be used to
attach anything to a painted surface. Emergency lights and smoke detectors must be kept uncovered
and cleared of obstruction.

Unauthorized Occupancy
Participants are prohibited from occupying a residential space at Wentworth without an assignment
from the Wentworth Institute of Technology. If a participant has a housing assignment, they cannot
trade places with another person, or assign themselves to another room without the permission of
program staff. Residents are prohibited from subletting, transferring, assigning, or sharing a room with
anyone who is not assigned to that room.

Sanitation
Residents are responsible for the cleanliness of their respective rooms/suites/apartments, which are
subject to inspection for health and safety reasons. Food items kept in rooms must be stored in closed
containers to avoid attracting and harboring pests and to avoid contamination of food. Carpeted floors
should be vacuumed weekly and whenever there is dirt, dust, crumbs, etc. visible. Hard surface floors
should be swept and mopped weekly and again whenever the need is apparent. Cleaning of the kitchens
and bathrooms within these units should be done weekly. Participants are expected to work out an
equitable schedule among them to maintain these standards. Participants must bag and tie all trash on a
regular basis and dispose in designated locations per building.

                                                                                                          24
