The official newsletter of Term 4 Week 10, 15th December 2020 Katoomba Public School KatNews Presentation Day Edition 2020 Principal’s Report… I would like to acknowledge the Darug and Gundungurra people, the traditional custodians of this Land upon which we learn and grow. I would like to acknowledge our gratitude that we share this land today, our sorrow for the costs of that sharing and our hope and belief that we can move to a place of equity, justice and partnership together. I would also like to pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging. Instead of hearing me deliver this annual speech you will be reading it in the KatNews Special Edition. It has been a year where we all have needed to be flexible our year was interrupted early and our homes became classrooms, we have learnt a lot about ourselves and each other and as the year comes to a close we have much to celebrate. A sincere thank you to the P&C and to our Presidents Jane and Rilka for their support this year and to all KPS families for your ongoing support of our children and staff throughout the year. Our school relies on staff who are not only very good at what they do, but understand that students learn best when they are working in a safe, respectful, supportive and creative learning environment. This year KPS had teachers who provided learning programs online and within the classroom that differentiated between children's learning abilities and styles. I feel very blessed indeed to work with the calibre of staff I do. Each one takes the time to see the positive in each student as whole people. To the KPS staff... teachers and SAS... staff thank you!! A special thank you to Fiona Wassell, Pam Williams, Amanda Nelson and Dea Palmer in the front office, for their support and hard work this year. A Principal could not ask to work with a more supportive, efficient, professional and hard working administrative team. A huge thank you to our School Learning Support Officers – Steph, Dea, Cate, Lea and Mandy you all support our students in such a lovely caring and professional way, each of you make the successful implementation of programs with individual students possible. You are all such an integral part of this school. We cannot do what we do without you. A huge thank you to Cate Paterson our Community Liaison Officer...Cate works two jobs...School Learning Support Officer and the CLO role. Her support and love for our school is evident in everything she does...and I am grateful for her ever ready energy for everything KPS. Thank you Cate. To my fabulous and hard working executive...our Assistant Principals – Narelle Barrie, Linda Charlton, Sue Campebell-Neale (Relieving), Helen Abbey (Relieving) and Nadine Bateman (Relieving) together we have certainly achieved much that we can be very proud of this year. I continue to highly value your support, dedication and friendship and of course humour...as we continue to move forward, committed to providing a friendly, caring, inclusive and respectful learning environment. Please Remember…… Tuesday 15th December Year 6 Farewell Wednesday 16th December 2020 Last day of Term for students Friday 29th January 2021 First day of Term for students Year 1-6 Wednesday 3rd February 2021 First day of school for Kindergarten students
KatNews Presentation Day Edition Page 2 Sadly we farewell two of our staff this year. Ms Campbell-Neale is moving down the coast. Sue, you will be missed. Your hardwork, patience and kindness have always been something of an inspiration. Your dedication to Katoomba for 13 years has been appreciated. On behalf of the staff, students and families...thank you and we wish you well in your new home and your future school is certainly very lucky. We also farewell Mr Lehman who is beginning his extended leave in 2021, moving into retirement. Russell has been at KPS since 1996, working as a teacher in the special ed unit and moving into the library in 2007. He knew as young as five years old that he wanted to be a teacher. He has worked to create such a friendly safe space in the library… the hub! His hard work is appreciated and a credit to him. On behalf of staff, students and families, a huge thank you Mr Lehman for all that you have done for education, your good humour and your caring nature will be missed. We wish you and your family health and happiness for the future. Lastly thank you goes to the students. The students are the ones who make this school what it is...our students are now settled into being familiar with high expectations and standards and becoming known as thoughtful, kind and high achieving citizens in the Katoomba community. I hope that you are all well in the lead up to Christmas. Like you all, I am sure that you are looking forward to being with family and finally knowing that COVID restrictions are lifting allowing us to work our way back to normality. To all the families of Katoomba, I do wish you an amazing Christmas and New Year. I, like all, am hoping that 2021 will be a fantastic year for everyone. Fiona Paine Principal Katoomba Rotary Honour Award I am so privileged to be presenting the Katoomba Public School Honour Award for 2020. This award is sponsored each year by the generosity of the Katoomba Rotary Club. Our school has high expectations for our students and the Honour Award is the opportunity to acknowledge one senior student who has not only met but surpassed those expectations. The recipient of this year’s Honour Award has excelled academically, through hard work and perseverance. This student strives in all learning areas; revisiting newly learnt concepts until they are mastered and consistently producing exceptional work above and beyond what is asked for. Throughout primary school this student has shown excellence in the arts through visual arts, music and dance. She has set herself goals and worked hard on personal growth. She has an incredible vocabulary, teaches me the correct pronunciation of Chinese towns and provinces, thinks deeply on what she is learning and extends herself: handing in additional homework on an almost daily basis. She really embodies a deep love of learning. The honour student for 2020 is Sylvie Gaul Ms Campbell-Neale Assistant Principal (Relieving)
KatNews Presentation Day Edition Page 3 The Trish Doyle Citizenship Award Wellbeing is at the core of learning at Katoomba Public School and we seek to ensure that our students develop healthy, positive attitudes about themselves and strong, meaningful connections with others. I think that this is, in essence, what citizenship is about. It is about connecting with others and showing care and kindness to those around us. It is also, increasingly, about the way which people connect with their environment and strive to protect, nurture and care for our world. This year’s recipient of The Trish Doyle Citizenship Award is known amongst our school community as someone who embodies these principles. They are a strong advocate for the environment. They seek to better the world around them through the choices and actions they make. And they are unfailingly caring, supportive and kind. They care about their peers. They support the teach- ers and staff. They spread kindness to all around them. This person has shared their generosity, warmth and joyful spirit throughout a particularly challenging year and I am extremely proud of her. It is an honour for me to present The Trish Doyle Citizenship Award for 2020 to… Rose Haynes Ms King Stage 3 Teacher Susan Templeman Stage 2 Reading Award When the Stage 2 teachers were asked to think about who we would like to give this award to for 2020, there was one student who immediately stood out in our minds. Her reading has come along in leaps and bounds and it is such a joy to see the spark in her eyes when she recognises that she is able to read previously considered ‘difficult’ words- she just knows she’s got it! This person has worked diligently all year with her reading and it has been such a pleasure to watch her confidence absolutely skyrocket as her skills have increased. So many aspects of class have been affected by this improvement in reading and now this student has become one of my most engaged and enthusiastic class contributors. I’m so proud of her, but more importantly, I hope she is super proud of herself because all her hard work is paying off. Well done Poppy Lawday! You are the recipient of the Susan Templeman Reading Award for 2020. Ms Bateman Assistant Principal (Relieving)
KatNews Presentation Day Edition Page 4 School Leaders Speech—Finn and Rose Hi there, we have had the pleasure of being the KPS School Captains for 2020. This year hasn’t been the best year but we got through it together as a school and a community. Yeah, as Rose said, 2020 has been a real stinker. However thanks to this tremendous school, its teachers, principal and helpers we all got through it making up for the things we missed out on and it’s possibly the best primary school ever. We're so glad that we got the last two terms at school, and we’re going to be sad to leave. We’re going to miss the kind and helpful teachers and aids, wonderful and fun camps, excursions, incursions, clubs and sporting activities. We really hope future generations will get as much as possible out of this fantastic school, like we did. Katoomba Public School is such an exciting place, I am so glad we spent seven years here. The school work is fun and exciting, we even have our own outdoor classroom! We hope next year will be a better year for all the students, and we also hope that the coming years will be great, and a big congratulations to the future school leaders . This school has offered many opportunities for us and always will for everyone. I’ve always felt welcome at this amazing school, and I think the next Captains will agree. We hope we will always be able to visit this cool school. Thank you. Sports Awards 2020 has been a pretty tough year for many aspects of schooling but I think sport in schools has probably struggled the most. We started the year off on a great note when we had to postpone the swimming carnival three times and eventually we took the competitive swimmers down to Katoomba Aquatic Centre to compete so we could work out who would make it to District Carnival. We had 13 competitors qualify this year and it was great to see Natasha Bedoya go on further and to make it to the Regional Carnival. Edie Leach went along to the trial for the Blue Mountains PSSA Basket Ball and was successful in making the team. Well that pretty much sums up the extent of sport this year. Everything got cancelled and these two students didn’t get the opportunity to represent the Blue Mountains PSSA teams in their sports. Oh, one more memorable event...
KatNews Presentation Day Edition Page 5 we had a fun Athletics Carnival booked at Wentworth Falls. The weather was fine the two weeks prior and two weeks after, but torrential rain the day before the event meant the track was under water and the event couldn’t be held. Instead we had a great day running games and the 87.2m race at school (one of the high school students disputed the accuracy of the track I created). NSW Premier Sporting Challenge Medal Now this is where the fun part starts. How do we choose who gets the sports awards for 2020? We had to look back over the past results in all sporting events we hold at a school, district and a regional level. We had students who excel in their chosen sports and would have competed at a district level and more than likely at a regional level. It is with great pleasure to announce the Premier Sporting Challenge winners for 2020. This medal is award- ed to a student who excels at their chosen sport and shows all the attributes of a true sports person. This year we have two winners and these two people are: Edie Leach and Natasha Bedoya Sports Persons 2020 Our female sports person for 2020 qualified for District Swimming throughout her schooling at KPS. She qualifies for all five possible events and places in the top 10 for all her races. She also competes at a district level in athletics and has placed 3rd—one place off regional qualification. She is a keen basketballer and would have been selected for the Blue Mountains PSSA team if she was able to attend the games. She is also part of the Blue Mountains Basket Ball representative team. Congratulations Alana Willey Our male sports person for 2020 has been involved in all sports throughout his time at Katoomba Public School. He performs at a high level in swimming, cricket and soccer in school and in local clubs. At school, he is one of the first to join in sporting activities and puts 100% effort into every sport he participates in. He is seen as a leader by other students in the school and he always includes and assists younger students develop their skills. Congratulations Toby Chaffey Mr Nicholson Sports Co-ordinator

KatNews Presentation Day Edition Page 19 Farewell Mr Lehman...Thank you
KatNews Presentation Day Edition Page 18 From the P&C This year has been a challenging year for everyone. Looking back to the rapidly changing events of 2020 it is easy to focus on how our lives have been disrupted, on how we felt when restrictions came in or the anxiety we felt around changed routines, language and habits. Mask wearing, social distancing, sanitising, contact tracing, testing, zoom meetings, virtual learning, lockdown, have all become normal, and sometimes it’s hard to remember life pre-pandemic. However, one thing that has stood out to us during 2020, and what we would like to focus on, is our amazing KPS community. The teachers and staff have carried on with grace and confidence, the students have taken the changes in their stride and the parents and carers have been as supportive as ever. Together we have focussed on the positives, and we have hopefully made it through our toughest times. At KPS we see our students grow and develop into amazing young people each and every year, and that comes from all of the love, care, consideration, leadership and support that all of the teachers and staff so generously offer students every day, so to each and every one, we would like to extend our thanks. Thank you for being on the frontline when many of us stayed home and for putting your hearts into your job of educating our children. This year has been different for the parents and carers too - not being able to come on to the school grounds has meant a sense of disconnect. There were no casual conversations at drop off, no assemblies, no open classrooms, no Grandparents’ day, no changing readers, no Mothers’ or Fathers’ day stalls, no working bees or trivia nights or discos and no Music Festival! Not feeling as connected, especially for our new families, has been the hardest adjustment for many, but we know many families used their creativity and resourcefulness to connect, and we already are in discussions about how we can welcome families back onto school grounds in 2021. The P&C aim to be very active in fundraising for the students and school community for the provision of curricular and extra-curricular supports such as big books, home readers, music equipment, sheet music, robotics and typing club, buses to sports carnivals, class excursions and dance festivals, excursion assistance including camp and swim school, car seats for K6N, school items such as Buddy Benches and the carved sign for Gunar Garung, and large TVs and Apple TVs for classrooms. Thank you for your support of the fundraising we have been able to do, such as the walkathon, Crazy Camels art gifts and ice block Fridays which has enabled us to support the school at bare mini- mum. Next year, more than ever, we are going to need some targeted fundraising to continue to support the school at the level usually expected, and we have some exciting plans that we hope you will contribute to and support. Thank you to the outgoing members of the P&C for your many years of hard work and dedication, and a warm welcome to our new members - we have a fabulous team for 2021. Any parents, carers or members of the school community are more than welcome to come to a P&C meeting, held the 2nd Wednesday evening of the month in the staff room, with the option of attending virtually via zoom. Or if you have any ideas, questions or concerns and you can’t attend the meeting, you can find us at morning drop off, contact us via the school office or email us at sec@kps-pc.org. Also remember to find us on Facebook at our Katoomba Public School P&C Association group. We hope you have a wonderful and well deserved Summer break with your family, and we look forward to starting afresh in February. Get inspired, get involved, and let’s make 2021 a great year.
