WEATHERHEAD HIGH SCHOOL PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT September 2019 – August 2020 Resilience Respect Reach Reward
HEADTEACHERS WELCOME Weatherhead High School plays a crucial role in developing personal skills and qualities in every student to ensure they are fully equipped to deal with life and lead healthy independent lives and become informed, active and responsible citizens. At Weatherhead we continue to be very proud of our extensive extra-curricular provision (pre COVID), our many leadership opportunities and the wide-ranging links we have with the local and wider community. We work hard to instil confidence and build resilience in a climate of respect and reward no matter what the climate or situation. During the last academic year, up to March 2020, we had a full provision of personal development and extracurricular activities until the global pandemic began, which curtailed all activities during the summer term as the school was closed. We very much hope, once our school and society are able to operate in a more normal way, that we will be able to continue to develop our programme. Miss A Whelan 2| P a g e

Once school closed in late March 2020, work on Careers did not stop: In June 2020, one of our Year 13 students completed the Deloitte Aspire digital work experience. This is her summary of it: During the work experience, I worked with others in a group to use the information we learned about the company to study real and theoretical businesses and identify how the company could help them. This was very helpful because I was more confident talking to people I didn’t know and presenting in front of the group. I am now also more aware about the industry should I decide to pursue a career there in the future. In July 2020, two of our students completed the Tata Consultancy virtual work experience programme. In August 2020, one of our students completed the University of Law virtual work experience programme. Sports Leadership Level One Sports Leadership (LSA1) Our whole cohort of Year 11 started their journey with level 1 in Sports Leadership. This involved students learning how to develop leadership skills through planning activities, communicating effectively, developing confidence and working together as a team. This culminated in delivering several lessons to not only their peers but younger year groups in Year 7 and 8. This year group in particular was outstanding with their delivery and our students demonstrated high levels of leadership and subject knowledge, in addition to evidencing this in their work booklets This qualification creates a good foundation for those students leading in employment or further education. As a result, in January 2021 following an Internal verification process with Sports Leaders UK; over 200 learners received their certificates The Sports Council Each year there is a restructuring and development of a Sports Leadership Team. The leadership team is collated with an interview process for Sports Captain and Sports Council. and the pupils involved with The Sports Council are role models to the department and assist in the promotion of sport to the whole school. The Sports Council filters their promotion and organisation to Sports Ambassadors and Active Play wardens. From September 2019 to March 2020 the Sports Council each took an active role in facilitating the Active Play programme and mentored Year 8 leaders to facilitate this. They were a credit during Netball Interform and ensured the whole process and event ran smoothly taking roles including umpiring, scorekeepers, time managers and coaches. PE leads the way for Sports Ambassadors The Sports Ambassadors scheme continued to be successful with the Physical Education department, as a high number of pupils committed to achieving bronze, silver and gold awards. The Sports Ambassadors are tutored by members of the Physical Education Department. Sports Council mentor BTEC Sport and A Level Students Sports Council members and our PE Apprentice facilitated with Sixth Form students to assist with revision and subject knowledge. They take on the role of delivering to specific groups and assisting with their confidence, knowledge and organisation. This mentoring scheme is an excellent learning aid for upcoming students who need further support within their subject area. 24| P a g e
Links with the Community CSLA leaders and Post 16 PE students work extremely hard developing their leadership skills and attributes. School Games Status Weatherhead's commitment to and development of competition, school sport and Physical Education has been recognised with the awarding of the Bronze School Games Award, a Government led awards scheme. Weatherhead experienced an External verification and collation of evidence in September 2019 which was passed with flying colours and awarded the Bronze Award for 2019/2020. The Duke of Edinburgh Award The Duke of Edinburgh Award Miss Faulkner continued in her role as D of E Manager having taken over from Mr Owen the year before. The summer of 2019 was the end of the third full year of Weatherhead High School running its own Duke Of Edinburgh Direct Licence programme, with rapidly increasing participation numbers. The bronze team took on a different leader with Miss Burke with 90 students, Mrs Grimwood led the 52 silvers and Dr Temple stepped up into the Golds with the largest cohort yet of 34 keen Year 12’s. We said a great big thank you and farewell to Miss Basford for her dedication to leading the Gold students and looked forward to her helping support future expeditions as a volunteer. Whilst training was well underway and the first Bronze A cohort had their Parents Information Evening in February regarding their first residential we then found ourselves in lockdown in March 2020. The Duke of Edinburgh scheme very much took a pause from being able to move forward however students could still complete their three sections of volunteering, physical and skill under Covid-restrictions at home by changing their activity. Should they complete their three sections they would still gain recognition with a “D of E Certificate of Achievement 2020” which they have until July 2021 to complete. We are delighted that a significant number of students have completed this and we encourage the remaining students to try and have this completed by the end of the year, with fingers crossed, expeditions to follow.
