April 17, 2022 A Celebration Of Disciplines: Celebrate Jesus! Celebrate We Are Easter People. The Risen Christ Knows Your Name! John’s story of the visit to the empty tomb provides two dramatic images of what kind of faith community thrives in the wake of this glorious Easter morning: 1. The fast-running beloved disciple An urgent Easter response that can remind the church that it is the beloved community that can be quick to look for the work of divine love amid tragedies and injustice. 2. Mary’s encounter with the so-called “gardener.” Mary doesn’t recognize Jesus until He calls her by name. In John 10:3, Jesus says that the sheep hear his voice and that he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. Later in verse 14, the Good Shepherd says, “I know my own, and my own know me.” Mary recognizes the risen Christ when the Good Shepherd is heard calling out her name. Like Mary, we too long to be known by God and to hear Him call out our names. This longing is not generic; It's personal and relational. Easter people make up a community whose members have heard the Good Shepherd calling their names and have responded to Christ by the Holy Spirit of God. Christ touches our lives in tangible ways that leaves us naming, claiming, and proclaiming the Good News of this Living God’s amazing love for us. Jesus told Mary to go tell the others what she has seen and heard. We are called to do the same. We can’t run fast enough. The tomb is empty. He is risen. He is risen indeed! Happy Easter … Share the Good News … He is Alive! 4
