FH Campus Wien University of Applied Sciences/International Office 6 The City of Vienna Vienna is the capital of Austria and with more than 1.8 million inhabitants, it is also the largest city in the country. Population numbers are on the rise as Vienna is not only considered the cultural and economic hub of Central and Eastern Europe, but it also offers its inhabitants and visitors a high quality of living and a rich culture acquired during an eventful 2,000-year-old history. Vienna repeatedly tops Mercer’s Quality of Living City Ranking and has been named the most livable city worldwide again in 2019 (Source: Mercer 2019). In 2020 und 2021 no new Ranking was published due to the pandemic. Vienna covers an area of 41,495 hectares and is divided into 23 districts. With an area of 31.8 square kilometers and a population of 207,200, the 10th district (Favoriten) is the largest among these and would be the third largest city in Austria (after Vienna and Graz). FH Campus Wien is located in the heart of Favoriten and is well connected with its neighborhood. Vienna is situated between the Vienna Woods and the Danube. Numerous guidebooks praise the beauty of this city, where the traces of history and tradition can be found on every corner. For a time lapse of Vienna, you might want to check out this short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fax_vb4gSzk But Vienna is more than St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel, and Schönbrunn Palace. During your stay, you will have the opportunity to discover the real Vienna off the beaten tourist tracks. You might encounter the traditions and peculiarities, the open minds, but also the sceptic views of the city’s inhabitants. Maybe you will come to the conclusion that Vienna can be labeled neither an eastern nor a western European city as such a vast number of different cultures have left their imprint in the past centuries to create its special identity. Last but not least, Vienna is also an important academic location in Europe. Apart from a number of renowned university and the FH Campus Wien, several other universities of applied sciences have been established in recent years. © FH Campus Wien/Müller Handbook for Incoming Staff 2022 Page 13 of 17

FH Campus Wien University of Applied Sciences/International Office Public transportation in Vienna Vienna has a very well-developed public transportation system covering the whole expanse of the city and reaches well beyond the city limits. It consists of five subway lines (U1, U2, U3, U4 and U6), several tram and bus lines, as well as a suburban railway system connecting the city of Vienna with its outskirts and the surrounding areas in Lower Austria. A single ticket starts at €2,40 and a weekly ticket valid for one calendar week is €17,10. These get you to every point within Vienna’s city limits and allow for rides on all means of public transportation, including ÖBB regional trains running through the city. Fares for public transportation in Vienna are relatively low compared to other major European cities. For more information on ticket fares, schedules and maps, visit the Wiener Linien website: www.wienerlinien.at Banks and post offices The legal tender in Austria is the Euro (€). All major foreign currencies can be exchanged at currency exchange booths across the city. The opening hours of banks differ according to institute, branch and location. You can also withdraw money at automatic teller machines all over Austria at any time of the day. At these ATMs you can use Austrian and foreign debit cards (Maestro and V-PAY) or credit cards (MasterCard, VISA, American Express, Diners) as well as Cirrus and Visa-Plus cards, which can be used in the interbank network provided by the mentioned credit card companies. Many hotels, restaurants and shops in the city accept credit cards. Cashless payment in general is very common in Vienna, so most places accept payments by card. Labels on the front door usually indicate whether card payment is possible in a shop. Post offices are usually open from 8 AM to 6 PM during the week and until noon on Saturdays. The main post office in the city center (Fleischmarkt 19) is also open from morning until evening on weekends and public holidays. © FH Campus Wien/Müller Handbook for Incoming Staff 2022 Page 16 of 17
