Greenie Gazette Newsletter of Camp Westminster on Higgins Lake | Spring 2021 | Vol. 27, No. 1 Is Camp Still Important for the Kids of the 21st Century? If you are a camp alum, then you are well aware of the good that camp can bring into a child’s life. You remember how much you looked forward to those phenomenal summers on the shores of Higgins Lake. But what about the camper of today? Is a camp experience still relevant? The answer is yes, more than ever. Camp provides the basics for social, emotional, and spiritual well-being just as food, clothing, and shelter meet the needs of physical well-being. It is not unusual to attend a memorial service for a camp alum and hear stories about how camp helped to shape who that person eventually became. But today’s youth need leadership and interpersonal skills as they cope with the demands and challenges presented by a world where the character qualities of cooperation, love, joy, kindness, thoughtfulness, patience, and peace are in short supply. Camp provides an environment in which these qualities are nurtured and cultivated in preparing our leaders for the time when they will be the ones making decisions and solving world situations. www.CampWestminster.com 1
Greenie Gazette Spring 2021 Three Property Enhancements One significant upgrade will greet everyone upon entering the camp. New signs have replaced what was removed by the local snowplow several years ago. A local landscaper and a sign artist cooperated in creating an attractive welcome entry that significantly improves and marks the place where our guests first encounter camp. Another improvement is a remodeling of Walden Lodge, originally the shower house. That site has served as staff men’s housing for the past several summers but now is being remodeled for use as lodging for a family or a few volunteers. The need for housing that enables social distancing as well as provides lodging for anyone volunteering as a resource person has become increasingly evident. The third property matter deals with a situation which has constantly jeopardized the operation of the camp in times of inclement weather. It is not uncommon for severe storms to cause power outages. Usually these are for short periods of time that can be compensated for with use of a small portable generator and judicious use of refrigeration equipment and water sources such as the flushing of toilets. However, if an outage were to last longer than approximately a half day, then other considerations would need to be made such as the closing of camp and sending campers home. A recommended solution is a much larger generator that would automatically activate during an outage and supply power to the camp insuring that refrigeration is kept functioning along with the greenies and electrical applications. 2 www.CampWestminster.com
Changing Lives Since 1925 Vol. 27, No. 1 Bikes Now at Camp Westminster With all there is to do at Camp Westminster, what else could possibly be added? Well, how about bicycles? This summer bikes will be available to ride both on the property and on special bike trails. The addition of this high adventure option made sense since a bike trail now runs in front of the camp from the Dairy Queen to West Higgins Lake Drive. Changing Lives Since 1925 Vol. 27, No. 1 For All the Saints. . . Individuals listed in this column played a special role in the life of Camp Westminster and are remembered by many for the impact they made over many years. If you have information regarding the death of someone that you believe friends and alumni of the camp would appreciate knowing, please send it to the camp office to be considered for a future edition of the Greenie Gazette. Carolyn Reid Bennett (06/01/1944 – 09/09/2020) Carolyn Reid Bennett was always an active supporter and encourager of Camp Westminster. She grew up attending the camp each summer developing some of her best lifelong friends from Counselor Sally Stockwell and her campers her camp acquaintances. Carolyn remained close especially to her Wildwood Class of 1960 which Sally Stockwell Frazier still today meets at least annually keeping up their (09/02/1937) – 11/23/2020) friendships and care for each other. Carolyn’s Sally Stockwell Frazier was a proud camper contagious warm smile will be sorely missed since and camp counselor at Camp Westminster on it was such an obvious indicator of her thoughtful, Higgins Lake for most of her childhood years, kind, and caring personality. Carolyn’s sister is eventually serving as assistant director. She was Nancy Reid DeHority who lives in Livonia. As with a member of the very first Wildwood Class of many alumni of Camp Westminster, Carolyn grew 1953 which was designed specifically to nurture up attending Westminster Church of Detroit with the character, independence, faith, and outdoor her parents Linn and Isabel Reid. Her faith was living skills of 16-year-old girls. This program the center point of her life. Always ready with a affected hundreds of lives in a lasting way during laugh and a hug, Carolyn taught many how to love its 33-year existence. Her love for the camp God by example. continued in her later years as was demonstrated by her attendance at summer services when she and husband Dick Frazier stayed at their cottage on Higgins Lake just east of the camp. Dick was senior pastor at Trinity English Lutheran Church of Fort Wayne, IN for 32 years where Sally was very active in the life of the church. Dick would serve as a guest preacher at the Westminster by the Lake worship services each summer. Sally and Dick’s legacy continues yet today with their grandchildren from the Bohntinsky and Palmieri families now participating as campers.
