Good News of Grace Grace Lutheran Church Green Bay, Wisconsin September 29, 2021 We celebrate Christ, teach Christ, witness to Christ, and care for others as though they are Christ. LEADERSHIP NEEDS: One way the pandemic has taken a toll on our ministry together at Grace is on the recruitment and training of Board and Council leadership. We’ve had to relearn, re-develop, and re-train for every routine ministry we do at Grace. That’s been a challenge for every staff member and every leadership team. And we’ve met those challenges, but we’ve had to set leadership recruitment and training on the back burner. Though we’re nowhere near back to normal, there are a couple leadership roles we’d like you to prayerfully consider: Vice-President The Vice-President presides over Council meetings in the absence of the President. There’s no expectation that the VP has to become our next President, so right now, the VP would be in a good position to observe and learn the workings of the congregation over which the Council presides. Council meets in-person 10 times a year on the fourth Tuesday of the month starting at 6:30 p.m. Treasurer Those filling the Treasurer’s position over the last couple decades have approached the position with different levels of intensity. Officially, the Treasurer is supposed to “supervise the financial statements and reports submitted to the Congregation Council … serve as a member of the Memorial Trust Committee, and … assist the Finance Committee in the preparation of financial budgets and planning.” ● Our Parish Administrator works at such a high level of accounting skill that little supervision has been necessary other than our annual audit. ● The Treasurer is needed to serve on the Memorial Trust Committee and some familiarity with investment instruments would be helpful. But the present Senior Pastor started servingon that committee with zero familiarity of such instruments. ● Once in a while we have needed a Finance Committee to help develop a budget, but not often. Like the VP, the Treasurer makes a commitment to attend the 10 Council meetings. In addition, the Memorial Trust meets about four times a year to review our $2 million investment in the ELCA Endowment Fund and to act on requests from the congregation for grants and loans from the fund. Open Board Positions At its meeting this week, the Council will be developing a plan to fill Board positions that may need filling by the Annual Meeting in January. If every one of the 34 Board members whose terms are over this year would agree to serve another term, we’d still have 6 positions to fill. But about half of those 34 Board members have already served an extra year because of COVID. Cont’d. on Page 2
We are not taking their continued service for granted. We are grateful for the partnership of all Council and Board members in the ministry of Grace. 112 Years of Faithful Ministry Something to think about. Grace Lutheran Church has been a place for worship, learning, and service for 112 years, its members building its beautiful sanctuary only 8 years after its founding. Our building has been upgraded constantly in the 100 years since to meet the ministry challenges it has faced including: ● the needs of the baby boom generation, ● the needs of differently-abled people, ● the need for more sophisticated audio-visual capabilities, ● and the need to expand our food pantry to remain a friendly and efficient source of help for our neighbors. And there’s more: ● Though the number of members has fallen, the financial commitment of members has remained strong with room to grow. ● We make a difference in our community and world though our support of other ministries. ● We are one of the few congregations downtown who still has a strong Sunday School and Youth program. Bottom line: Grace is a venerable and admirable house of God in Green Bay, a place worthy of sharing your leadership gifts, your time and talents. Please consider offering your service now to sustain the good work we do together for many years to come. Mission Partners (formerly known as Mission Sewing) is looking for your help. We would like to make school kits to send over seas to help children learn. What we need for these kits are: 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper, approximately 8” x 10 ½”; ONE 30-centimeter (12 inch) ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other; pencil sharpener; blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well); unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); a box of 16 or 24 crayons; 2 ½” eraser. Can you help us out? If you buy the supplies, we’ll put the kits together! Please place you donations in the container in the hallway by October 3. Thank you in advance for your generosity! 3
