Presenting the new GO! Guide T he Great Outdoors is a great place to build confidence and courage while making lifelong connections to the natural world. This GO! Guide comes to you as we’re changing New this year! GSSEM’s NEW! Outdoor Education Team is bringing outdoor adventures to you! To get more girls outdoors GSSEM Outdoor Education to make it even better! This year, more often, we are now taking our Outdoor Skills patch program on the we have traditional and new ways of bringing the Great road! Camp Hawthorn Hollow offers a more full service expe- rience, complete with staff (depending on the experience selected). Camp Play- fair offers opportunities for more rustic, independent camping experiences. Read on for more information about both GSSEM camp properties. GO! And grow T he key to having a successful camping experience is to build outdoor skills and experiences over time. As girls spend more time outdoors participating in new and challenging experiences, the more confident they will become. GO! for Camp Events L ove camp but can’t commit to an entire weekend? Camp is available for Girl Scouts at every level. See each level’s camp event offerings on pages 9-14 of this GO! Guide. All GSSEM outdoor education offerings for 2019 can also be found at gssem.org/calendar, including these: Camp Samplers This family event allows girls and their adult, troop, or family to experience what camp has to offer. Celebrate Earth Day at camp as we discover how to make less of a footprint and more of an impact on the world. At this family event, we will explore recycling, composting, and Leave No Trace through hands-on activities and a cooperative service project. April 28. 2nd Annual Tent Out Grab your gear and sister Girl Scouts for an “in-tents” adventure! After pitching your tent, explore camp and develop your outdoor skills. Make all meals over the open fire and at the end of the day, relax around the campfire. This camp is available for girls and an adult or troops, with a one- or two-night option. From 6pm Friday, June 21 – 10 am on Sunday, June 23; OR from 10 am Saturday, June 22 – 10 am on Sunday, June 23. End of Summer Pool Party! Celebrate the end of summer in style at Camp Hawthorn Hollow! Lounge by the pool, construct a winning raft, and get moving with tons of fun water games. August 25. GO! Get a taste of camp life at Weekend Camps A weekend camp (formerly known as core camp) is an all-inclusive camp experience for Girl Scouts at Camp Sample Weekend Camp Itinerary Friday Evening Arrival 5:30-7:30 p.m. Hawthorn Hollow. Each weekend camp All-Camp Activity 8 p.m. focuses on one badge. This gives girls the opportunity to explore the theme Saturday deeper, try out new camp activities, Breakfast at Handi Hall 8 a.m. and participate in long-held Girl Scout Activities scheduled 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. traditions. Weekend Camps are open to Lunch at Handi Hall 12 p.m. troops with adult/girl ratio and girl/adult Free time/rest until 2 p.m. pairs. Troops will share cabins with other Activities scheduled 2-5 p.m. troops and should be prepared to make Dinner at Handi Hall 5 p.m. Free time until 7 p.m. new friends. Weekend Camps are only All Camp Activity 7-8 p.m. available at Camp Hawthorn Hollow. Closing campfire 8 p.m. Cabin time 9 p.m. The beautiful, newly renovated Handi Hall is Sunday Morning now open! The dining hall now features new Breakfast at Handi Hall 8:30 a.m. flooring, lighting, stage area, and a cozy fireplace Closing flag and S.W.A.P.S. 9:30 a.m. for warming chilly days. GO! Troop Camping T roop camping offers the ultimate girl-led experience. Girls plan their own experience with the support of their leader and adults. Troops prepare their own meals and have access to many of the camp properties’ amenities. Troops pay a per-building price and weekend rentals include the stay anytime from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. Rentals are booked by the weekend. Fun things to do at Camp Hawthorn Hollow The following activities are included in the rental/camp fees: • Hiking trails • Volleyball court • Baseball and soccer fields • Gaga ball pit and tetherball • 4-square • Giant checkers • 4 giant Tic Tac Toe boards • Sports shed full of sports equipment Camp Hawthorn Hollow • 2 Hammock Villages • Two amphitheaters • Picnic pavilion C amp Hawthorn Hollow (CHH) is just 45 minutes from the Metro Detroit area, but definitely feels like a classic “Up North” experience. Outdoor Adventure Days Discover hidden gems in your community with Outdoor Adventure Days! Earn mini patches for the Outdoor Skills Patch at these themed events that offer the opportunity to learn and practice new skills in the outdoors. Offerings include canoeing at a state park, horseback riding workshops, fly fishing, archery, snow-shoeing and bicycle tour events. There are different Outdoor Adventure Days for each Girl Scout level! Outdoor Round-Ups Experience Council-wide events that offer a variety of outdoor adventures with sister Girl Scouts from around the area! Brownies GO! Weekend Camps at Hawthorn Hollow Brownies love being outside and GSSEM is thrilled to offer so many adventures at camp and in your community. NEW: Outdoor Art badge Outdoor Skills Days is available this year! There is no better muse than the great outdoors to inspire the artist in every girl. Campers will use their outdoor skills while Outdoor Skills 1 allowing nature to inspire the art, dance, and designs they create.
