Glamping took off as a trend in the mid- 2010s in Europe and the USA and is now a fairly mainstream travel style in many parts of the world, including Malaysia. Several glamping resorts have sprouted up in Pahang and Selangor while in Penang, Boulder Valley Glamping is the first. It appears to be a late player in the game, having officially opened just last November but has actually been six years in the making. The uneven, rocky Photo courtesy of Mok Youn Fai terrain was the biggest among a slew of challenges that the owners, a group of nature-loving architects and landscape designers, faced in transforming the former rubber estate into what they envisioned to be an almost off-grid haven for relaxation. There is only one patch of flat land here, which they’ve named Forest Glades, that is now a meeting and resting point for guests. Wanting to preserve as much of the natural flora and fauna meant that they had their work cut out for them. Not wanting to chop down any trees or hack away at the plants, they built around and above them instead. “All our villas and tents are thus built on stilts. This creates a treetop experience for our guests,” says architect Nina Lee of Amazing Discovery Sdn Bhd, which owns FACING PAGE: A variety of functions Boulder Valley Glamping.
