GERMAN JAZZ PRIZE 2023
The nominees have been selected

    ● eighty-one national and international nominations in thirty-one
        award categories
    ● presentation of the German Jazz Prize on April 27, 2023 at the
        Metropol Theater Bremen

This April, the German Jazz Prize will be awarded for the third time. A total of
eighty-one nominees are up for the coveted prize, which has been awarded
since 2021 by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the
Media, Claudia Roth, in cooperation with Germany’s central music funding
institution, Initiative Musik. Who gets to take home a trophy and €10,000 in
prize money will be announced at the award ceremony on April 27, 2023, at
the Metropol Theater in Bremen.

The twenty-five-member expert jury of the German Jazz Prize reviewed more
than 1,000 entries and selected musicians and projects in thirty-one categories
who have made extraordinary artistic achievements and innovative
contributions this past year in national and international contexts. These
categories are divided into: Artists, Recording/Production, Live,
Composition/Arrangement and Special Prizes of the Jury. The three nominees
for the category „Venue of the Year“ were determined by the members of the
German Jazz Union.

Jana Herzen, a member of the expert jury and president of the U.S. label
Motéma Music, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in this year, summed up
the nominee selection process:

"I’m impressed with the generous initiative of the German Jazz Prize
and am grateful to serve as a special jury member for this country
which contributed to the rise of Motéma via the Hamburg-based
distributor Membran. The deep immersion into Germany’s
contemporary jazz scene that was required by this jury position led me
on a surprising and diverse musical adventure that was rich with
artistic dedication and authentic creativity and marked by moments of
profound beauty, and good humor as well. The passionate discussion
among the jurors as we narrowed a broadly deserving field down to
just three nominees was rewarding though not easy. I continue to be
amazed at the transformative ways this American-born art form
blossoms internationally. I also appreciate that there is an international
dimension to the awards as well."

In the next phase, the main jury, consisting of members of the expert jury
together with prominent jazz musicians and public figures, will determine the
award winners, who will be honored on April 27 at the Metropol Theater
Bremen with the German Jazz Prize. The cash awards for both nominees and
prize winners total more than €350,000.

The members of the main jury and the names of the thirty-one award winners
will be announced at a later date. More information on the German Jazz Prize
and this year’s concert evening (including ticket sales) as well as an overview
