Friesland Football News Our Year 8 Friesland team had a very slow start which meant we were 2 down in ten minutes, most of the team still thought we were at Hogwarts and couldn’t quite get their head round the fact that Harry Potter wasn’t there. A battle ensued on a very sticky and very small pitch but for all the possession we couldn’t score. Somehow with ten minutes to go, Dinero scored from a very acute angle and Bella delivered a wicked corner that their 6 foot centre back turned into his own goal. 2-2! Fading light meant it went straight to penalties, and with a former world cup referee (true) he loved taking notes down about each penalty taker making it take longer, colder and darker than it needed to be. Ben made a great save on the first pen and we thought it was plain sailing….. loads more misses from both teams, including a chance to win for both teams, left Issac to be slighted bullied into taking penalty number 7, scoring and then a Repton miss meant we go into the quarter finals. DCFC Under 19’s Women’s Team The Derby County Under 19’s Women’s Team, who study at the sixth form at Friesland, visited St George’s Park on Tuesday for a training session delivered by FA staff. For some of the girls it was their first experience visiting the National Football Centre, home of the England football teams. The girls took part in various activities throughout the day and were highly praised by the FA staff. As part of Derby County Community Trusts relationship with the FA, this enables students to enjoy these additional experiences with plans for students to visit again in the future. A Chorus Line It was lovely to be back in the theatre with our GCSE and A Level dance students on Tuesday evening. We travelled to The Curve theatre to watch A Chorus Line. The students were a credit to the school and behaved superbly. New York City. 1975. On an empty Broadway stage, 17 performers are put through their paces in the final, gruelling audition for a new Broadway musical. Only eight will make the cut. The audition takes an unexpected turn as the director, Zach, invites the performers to open up about their lives and what brought them into theatre.
Practical Dissections in A-level Biology In A Level Biology this week we have been learning about the gas exchange systems in different living organisms. We conducted a fish dissection to identify the different components of the respiratory system and how the gills are adapted to carry out gaseous exchange efficiently. First, we cut open the operculum using scalpel and forceps so that we could identify. Next, we separated the gill arches so that we could cut them out using metal scissors. We then placed the gill arches in a beaker of water to see them in greater detail. The fish carry out efficient gas exchange due to their large SA:VOL ratio because of their gill filaments, further increased because of their lamellae. Efficient gas exchange is able to take place in the lamellae because of its large supply of blood creating a steep concentration gradient. This allows the oxygen in the water to diffuse down a concentration gradient into the blood, and the carbon dioxide to diffuse from the blood in the gill filaments into the water.
