28 May 2021 From the Principal’s Desk Kia ora katoa Around 70 members of the Menzies College community spent four days at Deep Cove last week. Having access to a part of New Zealand that is so unique is a real privilege. We are extremely grateful to the Deep Cove Outdoor Education Trust and Real Journeys for providing access, accommodation and environmental education. The environmental educator supplied by Real Journeys did a superb job of engaging the students. Activities included: hiking up Hanging Valley, walking to Helena Falls, fishing, kiwi calling, glow worm spotting, water ecology lessons and cruising the Fiord to spot dolphins, seals and penguins. As always, the students were fantastic, they gave their all and returned in need of a good sleep. A big thank you to the staff and parents who so willingly give up their time to help out on these camps. Sometimes it appears they have more fun than the kids! Parents L to R: Bathan Muir, Travis Dale, Jonathan May, Andrew Roy A large number of Year 11 students were recognised this week with chocolate fish for gaining Literacy, Numeracy or both. These are important stepping stones to gaining qualifications and we are very proud of the engagement and determination shown by these students. There is another large group due to be recognised in the next week or two as the credits start to roll in. Check the chocolate fish awards out in the foyer when you next visit the office. Unfortunately, Menzies is not an island, so when we read about vaping problems nationally it is also reflected locally. There are a small number of students who have made poor decisions around vaping. It is illegal to vape in a school. Students with vapes are breaking the law. Vapes will be confiscated. Parents will be informed if students are involved. Each offence will be dealt with according to the circumstances. I am very proud of the way many students have responded by making it clear to their peers that vaping is not acceptable. Thank you to Chris Crighton for attending assembly last week and sharing the story of his parent’s contribution to World War 2. In particular Chris highlighted the work and sacrifice of the frontline nursing staff and recounted his mother’s memories of the sound of the haka before the battle of El Alamein. On Thursday next week we are having a concert for Mrs Cowley. Unfortunately, she will not be able to attend as her health has deteriorated in the last two weeks. The concert will be recorded and shared with her and her family. We are looking forward to honouring Barb in the ‘Menzies way’.
