Wednesday 4th November 2020 Term 4, Week 4 From The Principal’s Desk Violin Donation Thank you to Maxine Mason for kindly donating a violin to the school last week. Maxine’s kind donation will be added to the small number of instruments we have at the school. Music will be one of the focus areas we will investigate as part of our planning for 2021. Thanks again Maxine! Learn to Swim Program All students were provided with a permission note and details about our Learn to Swim program for 2020. We have been able to book the Uralla Pool so that every student can be involved and we have also secured a sporting grant to allow this to happen free of charge for everyone. Please complete the permission note in yesterday’s information and return this to the school as soon as possible. Presentation Day We have waited as long as possible to organise our Presentation Day for 2020 as we have been hoping to see some changes to COVID requirements in schools. We will hold our presentation day assembly on Friday 11th December from 1pm. I am unaware of what this will be able to look like at the moment, however I am expecting to see some updated guidelines soon. Whatever the case, our school will comply with all NSW Department of Education requirements. I have also written to every organisation and individual, who usually donates a prize for presentation day, informing them that the school will cover the costs for this for 2020. We are acutely aware of the issues organisations have had in fundraising this year and feel that it would be inappropriate to ask for contributions when they too have had a much reduced financial intake this year. Every award that is usually presented, will be presented this year as per normal. Remembrance Day Wednesday 11th November Our Year 6 students will attend a Remembrance Day Service next Wednesday commemorating the 102nd Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, signifying the end of World War I. As the annual ANZAC Day parade and service was not possible earlier this year due to COVID restrictions, the Uralla RSL have permission to hold a service at Alma Park from 10.30am. Our Year 6 students will attend and lay a wreath on behalf of Rocky River Public School. Skoolbag App—URGENT Every student should have brought home information yesterday regarding a new school app our school will be using from now, called “Skool Bag”. The information pack contained instructions on how to download the app and set it up for our school. If you have any questions or would like some help in setting this up on your phone/device, please contact us at the school. Please consider downloading the new app today as it is important for us to be able to communicate any new information with you. Thank you for your help. Whole School Activities Vegetable Garden - Our students had a great time planting out our vegetable garden recently, they planted corn, lettuce, zucchini, gooseberries, tomatoes and basil, the timing was perfect with the rain we received during the following days. Sensory Garden Mr Schaeffer has done a great job planting out our sensory garden and we extend a very big thank you to Olivia at Cedar Nursery in Armidale for donating all of the wonderful plants for us. There are a mixture of plants to stimulate the senses. These include herb varieties such as rosemary, lavender, thyme, oregano and curry plant, pig face varieties, a bay tree, lambs ear, sunflowers and californian poppies. ‘A sensory garden is a garden environment that is designed to stimulate the senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound. These gardens have proven to be beneficial to both children and adults’. We are very excited to have a sensory garden included in our grounds at Rocky River School and look forward to watching it grow. Best wishes to Cailey for her Birthday on Monday 26th October.
As part of our Indigenous Art unit, Lower Division have been having a wonderful time with Mrs Schaeffer learning some block printing techniques to create their very own prints consisting of line, shape and pattern, just like Aboriginal people used in their bark paintings. We can't wait to share our results with you. Our Kindergarten transition students have been enjoying some creative arts and technology as part of their transition program. The program this year is based on ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. Our Lower Division students have been a wonderful support for them over the past couple of weeks and we look forward to spending more time together for the remainder of the program. Look what’s happening in Upper Division Hi all! In Upper Division, we have been busy little bees writing our response to a "Finding Our Heart" task. Students have drafted, written and published their stories and these will be going straight into our work sample folders. Additionally, we have read the books "Fair Skin, Black Fella" by Renee Fogarty and "Ernie Dances to The Didgeridoo" by Alison Lester. Upper Division have also been researching different aspects to Australia's Indigenous culture that we come across as we read these books, such as Arnhem Land, totem animals and differing seasons in Indigenous cultures. We are learning and laughing a lot together on Anaiwan country as we move into NAIDOC Week next week. Very exciting things to come! Miss Patterson
School News New School App The school has purchased an agreement with SkoolBag to replace our current Skool Loop app. We have done this as a result of feedback from parents and the way we currently use the app. Kindergarten 2021 Enrolments Skoolbag enables many more features such as uploading our own newsletter, add dates and permission notes so We are currently taking Kindergarten enrolments for they can be printed at home (in case they have been mis- placed) and it also connects well with the NSW next year.
