Freshman Externship 2022 Program Host Organizations Listing Big Brothers Big Sisters of Fond du Lac* Vision: All youth achieve their full potential. Mission: Create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Accountability Statement: By partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers and others in the community and hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving: Higher aspirations, greater confidence and better relationships; Avoidance of risky behaviors; Education Success. For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor-and volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers and children. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. Our staff consists of Match Support Specialists, Enrollment Coordinators, Office Manager and Executive Director. Location: Fond du Lac Preferred Majors: Marketing and Communication Externship Activities: Learn about the non-profit organizations and the internal functions of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Dedicated time with all staff members with a focus on special events and marketing. Number of Externship Positions: 1 student Number of Hours: 20+ hours Dress Code: Business Casual * * * * * * * * * * * * * Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac The Boys & Girls Club is a youth development organization that serves youth in Fond du Lac and the surrounding areas. Our mission is to empower all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens through academic, social and emotional support. We run afterschool programs and summer programs that serve youth in 1st-12th grade. Location: Fond du Lac Preferred Majors: Education, Social Work, Sport & Recreation, and Undeclared. Externship Activities: Orientation and introduction to the organization with the Associate Executive Director. Dedicated time spent with Chief Executive Officer, Director of Operations and Director of Resource Development. Sit in on leadership team/staff meetings. Hands on experience in classroom and recreational spaces helping run activities for youth in all age groups. Central Wisconsin Christian School (Waupun) Central Wisconsin Christian is a PreK – 12 private school located in Waupun with an enrollment of 393. It is governed by a Board of Directors and is accredited by Wisconsin Religious and Independent Schools and Christian Schools International. Its mission is “Teaching students to glorify God and serve in His world.” CWC has completed three building projects in the last 10 years and enjoys modern facilities and 21st century learning. The teachers at CWC holding teaching licenses from the state of Wisconsin or neighboring states in the Midwest. Location: Waupun Preferred Majors: Education Externship Activities: Students will be provided in-classroom job shadowing at desired grade level (K-12th), specific curriculum (example: history, math, etc.), and specialty area (example: special education) of your choice. As available, students may meet with administrators to learn administrative and operational duties within the school. Number of Externship Postions: 2-4 Students Number of Hours: 20+ Hours Dress Code: Business Casual * * * * * * * * * * * * * Drug Abuse Correctional Center* The Drug Abuse Correctional Center (DACC) is located north of Oshkosh in Winnebago County. The current population capacity is 300 adult male inmates, with all inmates at DACC having an Earned Release Program (ERP) need. The core curriculum for ERP is generally 20 weeks in length however, this is based on each inmates risk level and actual assessed needs, which can either, shorten or lengthen an inmate’s actual length of participation. A major emphasis of the program is community reentry. Treatment staff and each inmate work extensively with their respective probation and parole agent towards involvement in release planning, including aftercare, residence, support services, and employment. Location: Winnebago/Oshkosh Preferred Majors: Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, and Undeclared. Externship Activities: Students will gain an understanding of what the Department of Corrections has to offer in the areas of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselors, Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, and those students that are undetermined in their field goals. Students will be given opportunities to observe inmate substance use disorder groups, cognitive behavioral groups, and other various groups, review state and federal policies, work with other interdepartmental agencies and security staff, observe offenders as they reintegrate into the community, and sit in on meetings and inmate staffing’s. All externship students will be subject to a background check prior to being placed at the facility. Number of Externship Positions: 2 students Number of Hours: 20+ hours Dress Code: Business Casual
Fond du Lac Dock Spiders and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are joining together to provide a unique opportunity for students to complete an externship at both organizations! The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders are a member of the Northwoods League, a premier summer collegiate baseball league. We are one of 23 teams in the league, which includes teams from Green Bay, Madison, Kenosha, and Mequon. The Dock Spiders were an expansion team for the 2017 season and play their home games at Herr-Baker Field at Marian University. The team plays 72 games (36 home and away) from the end of May through early August and won the Northwoods League Championship in 2018 and the Wisconsin-Illinois Northwoods League Pod Championship in 2020. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are a minor league baseball team of the High-A Central, and the High-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The team is in Appleton, WI and the team plays its home games at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The stadium opened in 1995 and seats 5,170 fans (plus grass seating). The Timber Rattlers have won nine league championships, most recently in 2012. The team began play as the Appleton Foxes in 1958 and played at Appleton’s Goodland Field before moving to their current home at Fox Cities Stadium, a larger, more modern ballpark on Appleton’s northwest side. The franchise set its all-time attendance record of 253,240 in 2009, the first year of their affiliation with the Milwaukee Brewers. Location: Fond du Lac and Appleton Preferred Major: Sport and Recreation Management, Marketing, Communication Externship Activities: Dedicated time spent in each department of the organization (i.e. Box/Office Ticket Sales, Corporate Sponsorships, Group Sales, Community Relations, Stadium and Team Operations, and Marketing/Promotions) to learn core functions and gain an understanding of the baseball industry as a whole. Additional time dedicated to reading club school visits and season ticket prospecting. Number of Externship Positions: 2 students Number of Hours: 25-30 hours Dress Code: Business Casual * * * * * * * * * * * * * Fond du Lac Festivals, Inc. (FFI) Fond du Lac Festivals, Inc. (FFI) is dedicated to our vision of creating community through events showcasing what Fond du Lac and the surrounding communities have to offer,and enhancing the quality of life for our residents. Our mission is to direct, promote, and support festivals and special events that showcase the community while assisting with fundraising for local charitable organizations. The organization also looks to strengthen preexisting relationships as well as forge new relationships among the businesses and organizations in our community. FFI is currently responsible for organizing Walleye Weekend, Sturgeon Spectacular, and other special events throughout the year. We work with hundreds of businesses and organizations to create family-friendly activities along with events for all individuals. Dedicated time spent with to learn our internal functions and gain an understanding of the “Events World” as a whole. Additional time dedicated to the coordination of elements for the 2022 Sturgeon Spectacular, held every year on the 2nd weekend in February. Fond du Lac Police Department* The City of Fond du Lac Police Department is a full service law enforcement agency that is comprised of more than 130 highly skilled and dedicated professionals. Location: Fond du Lac Preferred Majors: Criminal Justice, Homeland Security Externship Activities: Externs will be provided an opportunity to shadow members of both the Patrol and Criminal Investigative Divisions; including patrol ride-a-longs. Additionally, externs will be provided opportunities to work with other specialty teams, units and bureaus that may include; School Resource Officer, K9, SWAT, Training, Crisis Negotiations, Domestic Violence Team, Crime Prevention, CSOs, and Police Administration. Enrollment for the 2020 – 2021 school is currently 1523 students. The School District of North Fond du Lac is comprised of the Early Learning Center (houses a privately owned childcare facility, the 4K program, early childhood programs, and the Phoenix Academy, a high school alternative learning program); the Friendship Learning Center (grades 5K - 5th); our newest building, Treffert Way for the Exceptional Mind (our charter school), The Treffert Way for the Exceptional Mind), Bessie Allen Middle School (grades 6th – 8th) Horace Mann High School (grades 9th – 12th). Markesan Resident Home/North Terrace Assisted Living We have continuum of care with our 50-bed nursing home that offers rehabilitation and 32 apartment assisted living located on the edge of Markesan. The 25-bed hospital has been serving the Ripon area community for more than 82 years, and is continually adding new services and providers to offer a broad spectrum of care. Through continued input from the community, Ripon Medical Center is bringing health care that serves a broad reach of medical disciplines from primary care to specialty care, including behavioral health, cancer care, general surgery, orthopedic and foot surgery, and more. Emergency care and urgent care services are available 24- hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week through highly-qualified doctors and nurses in the Emergency Department. Location: Ripon Preferred Majors: Nursing Externship Activities: Students will be introduced to all aspects of nursing including: Clinical services, emergency, laboratory, medical imaging, medical/surgical and perioperative care.
