Why a College Degree?
Poll Question #1: What's the difference in lifetime earnings
between a HS grad and College grad (Bachelor's degree)?
Answer: $900,000
Poll Question #2: In 2018, the average individual student
loan debt balance in the US was?
Answer: $32,000
                             • The US Census estimates that those
with a BA/BS degree earn about
$900K on average over a lifetime
                               vs. those with HS degrees/GEDs
                             • Employment rates are also higher
                               for degree holders
                             • A degree gives you more career
                               options and networking
                               opportunities
                             • But, a degree isn’t enough – you
                               must commit to lifetime learning

                                                                    3

Alumni Testimonial
                           Did you enjoy your experience?
Ryan Waite Yes! I have no complaints. You get emails when your
NCR 2016 alumnus assignments get graded, when other students post on the
AAB Business Management discussion board, etc. The class material/curriculum was
Programming & Dev. Focus straightforward and informative. Everything was online, the
EGCC staff/instructors are responsive to emails, the interface was
simple (to me) and the flexibility with assignment due
                           dates were a plus.

                           Did you find it valuable?
I did. I finished in just a year thanks to having prior
knowledge for some of the courses. I got 63 credits from
EGCC that I transferred to my new college (UMGC), which
put me halfway done with my Computer Science Major.
EGCC saved me a lot of time and money.

How did you fit school into your life?
The fit was not hard, just a little bit of time management
and everything fell into place. Many of the classes were
business related, which tied into what some of my personal
endeavors were so it didn't even feel like school
sometimes; it felt like personal development.

                                                                                           10

Appendix: Choosing a College
Key Considerations:
• Campus-based college or an online degree
• Location (if campus-based), commuting, housing
• Area(s) of study – balance interest and practicality
• Cost - beware of debt (no debt is the best option)
• School reputation and network have value and cost
Remember:
• Year Up alumni tell us the two biggest obstacles to
pursuing their degree are cost and time, so on-line
  degrees are increasingly popular
• Don’t stop at the Associate’s degree
• Once you have your Bachelor’s degree, no one asks about
where your Associate’s degree is from

                                                            14
