APRIL 2021 Franciscan a monthly publication of St. Francis Episcopal Church We have journeyed through the wilderness this Lent and on Easter Sunday we find ourselves on the shores of baptismal waters. Baptism is the act of participating in Christ’s death on the cross and resurrection from the grave through immersion or sprinkling with water. St. Francis celebrates baptisms four times a year during the Holy Eucharist on Sundays of great celebration in the life of the church, including Easter. The corporate sharing of baptism provides the opportunity for all the baptized gathered together to renew our baptismal vows. The Book of Common Prayer instructs “Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body the Church. The bond which God establishes in Baptism is indissoluble.” An indissoluble bond with God. What a gift and a reason to celebrate! But wait, there is more… Holy Baptism is a moment of great celebration and rejoicing for the Christian community, not only celebrating the new life of the believer in Christ, but their full participation in the life of the Christian community as we join the Lord’s Table for eucharist, a table John Chrystostom calls “the awesome table, which is laden with all the good things. They taste the body and blood of the Lord and become the dwelling place of the Spirit; since they have put on Christ, they go about appearing everywhere like angels on earth and shining as brightly as the rays of the sun.” The sacrament of baptism is a serious matter in the Episcopal tradition because it is the site of serious transformation. They are “rites grounded in the crucial turning points of salvation history.” The sacraments effect change in all who participate and are turning points of history themselves for both the individual, the church, and creation wherein the church is engaged in the divine life through “real participation in Jesus’ work of redemption.” The scriptures speak much about baptism, but two particularly poignant verses are instructive. “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). “In Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26-28) In baptism we are forgiven, gifted the spirit, clothed with Christlikeness and bound together. We understand “the Church as a community formed by baptism and empowered by baptism and the Eucharist to carry out the reconciling ministry of Christ in the world.” When we consider all that baptism offers we see that it is possible for the church to go about like angels on earth shining brightly as rays of sun. This Easter let us come together to meet the resurrected Christ with surrendered hearts and minds, open to the Holy Spirit working within us the change possible to offer light to a world searching and grasping for God. ~ Fr. Jed Dearing “A Publication of St. Francis Episcopal Church—“Proclaiming the Good News in word and deed.”

READING BETWEEN THE LINES JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN TODAY, ALLELUIA! H1982 #207 This hymn is based on an anonymous medieval 14th century Latin text and is thought to be Anglo-German. This hymn, "Surrexit Christus Hodie", was first used in a collection entitled Lyra Davidica or Collection of Divine Songs and Hymns, dated 1708, which were set to easy and pleasant tunes. The hymn tune in our H1982 is called Easter Hymn, which, ironically, is also anonymous. Verse 4 is a doxology which was later added and was written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788). The descant (an independent line usually sung or played above a basic tune or melody) in our hymnal comes from the English, Hymns Ancient And Modern, Revised, from 1950. " Alleluia " is the perfect word for Easter Sunday. It simply means "Praise the Lord". It is used throughout scripture (especially in Psalms and Revelation) to glorify God for His mighty acts. And what mightier act is there than the resur- rection of Christ from the dead! Interestingly, this hymn speaks more about Christ's death than His new life. Both are vital aspects of God's redeeming work. Christ endured the cross and rose from the dead. His death and resurrection are inseparable, and hymn sing- ers rejoice in all of it. During this Easter season, let us praise the God who made it happen. Alleluia! Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit. I Peter 3:18 9

We are excited to share formation with St. Francis in lieu of Father Jed's family leave and encourage you to join us. For more information, please contact the Rev. Peter Homeyer, at ChristDaytonRector@gmail.com. PRAYERS OF PRAISE "Jesus Christ is Risen Today Al-le-lu-ia". As we enter the beautiful Easter season in our church calendar we are reminded of what Christ has done so that we might have eternal life. What a wonderful privilege we have been given...the right to live with Jesus forever. We should remember to praise Jesus frequently . Actually this should also be done at all times but especially at this time we need to praise Him abundantly for the magnificent gift that He has given to us. A prayer might be: Jesus, I thank You for the great of life with You forever. Thank You so much for Your complete obedience and commitment to Your Father for me. I cannot Praise You enough for Your great sacrifice. Inspire us Jesus to continue our praise of You to those in our lives. Thank for your unconditional never ending love for us. Glory to You forever and ever. Amen. (Do not for get to use your own words too}. "Who did once upon the cross Al-le-lu-ia, Suffer to redeem our loss Al-le-lu-ia." Hymn 207, Verse 1, Lines 1,3,4. Have a glorious Easter Season. Mary Martin, Parish Health Ministry 10
