PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES 2016 / 2018 — Art director and curator at MHB, the program of residencies for MO.CA — Center for Contemporary Culture (Brescia, Italy). Being the artistic director of MHB, during the last year and a half I had the opportunity to curate, edit and organize festivals & exhibitions in the Center for Contemporary Culture of Brescia. I also work as a tutor for the resident designers. Working with them, helping them to develop their own projects and editing their events has been an occasion to develop my curatorial skills. 2012 / Active — Krisis Publishing — Creative director / Curator / Graphic Designer Co-founder (with Andrea Facchetti) of the independent publishing platform. KP is an inquiry about the impact of media culture in contemporary societies. Krisis Publishing avoids a stable visual identity, embracing a critical, precarious and flexible approach. Besides publishing activities, KP also produce AV releases, curate events, organizes educational activities (workshops, seminars, installations & lessons) in University Classes (Libera Università di Bolzano, Università IUAV di Venezia, Università degli Studi di Brescia, Polytechnic University of Milan). 2016 / active — Rete Neurale Milano EST — A&R, Designer RNME is a collective focusing on club culture, experimental music and AV installations, active in Milano since 2016. Most of the events from RNME took place in MACAO, new center for Arts, culture and research in Milan. (see COLLECTIVES section) 2012 / 2018 — Studio Frames — Creative director / Graphic Designer Studio Frames is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Brescia, working with musicians, artists, labels and institutions. Starting from a critical approach to design, SF produces bold and unconventional identities and artworks, odd data visualizations and independent editorial projects. 2009 / 2017 — Aucan (co-founder, musician, producer, author of visual contents) Aucan started as a experimental music band trio composed by a drummer (D. Dassen- no) and two multi-instrumentalists (F. D’Abbraccio & G. Ferliga). Among the years the band evolved toward a more electronic sound (becoming a duo formed by D’Abbraccio and Ferliga). The project became something closer to an AV duo experimenting in digital electronic music. Active since 2009, we played almost 400 gigs across the world in cultural centers, museums, festivals, galleries and music clubs. Last album, “Stelle Fisse” was selected as “Noise of the Week” by The Times and picked in the best releases of the year (2015) by Bleep. NETWORKS I strongly believe in artistic collaborations and in the power of sharing skills and perspectives through multidisciplinary, shared programs. Here is a brief list of / COLLECTIVES the networks I am member of. LOREM Beside the project goals, Lorem Platform born with the aim to collect and spread knowledges and new perspectives in the intersections between art, AI PLATFORM and critical practices. The platform involves AI artist (M. Klingemann, DEU, Resident at Google Arts, Golden award at LUMEN prize), AI scientists (D. Henry, GB, Head of Innovation at Google Arts and Culture; N. Cattabiani, ITA, researcher in Information Engineering at Unitus, Viterbo), video artists (K. Sudolski, ITA/PL, Video Artist and Designer, ; M.A. Hardiker PL/US, Game Designer, Independent Researcher), sound designers (L. Pagan, ITA, Researcher at AGON, Milan). Most of them work for public institutions, and try to build connections among different disciplines across Europe. Rete Neurale RNME is a collective focusing on club culture, experimental music and AV installations, active in Milano since 2016. Most of the events from RNME Milano EST took place in MACAO, new center for Arts, culture and research in Milan. Beside music and artistic events, RNME spreads his work through E.S.T. (Empty Signal Transmission), a monthly podcast on invitation. Unità di Crisi Collective and cultural association born in 2009 in Venice. Unità di Crisi is an italian collective composed by artists, designers and researchers in the fields of visual cculture. The collective was born from a common reflection about the concept of crisis in modern society, and about the role of design within this scenario. Actual members are Francesco D’Abbraccio and Andrea Facchetti (teacher at Arts and Design Faculty, Free University of Bozen, PhD in Design Science at IUAV University, Venice). UdC main activity is at the moment the independent publishing house Krisis Publishing. // www.krisispublishing.com Padania Classics Padania Classics is a visual research project aiming at identifying the Classics from Padania in aesthetics, architecture and human behaviors by documenting, producing and spreading content. Padania is an alternative name for the Po Valley, a major plain in the north of Italy. The term was sparingly used until the early 1990s, when Lega Nord, a federalist and, at times, separatist political party in Italy, proposed “Padania” as a possible name for an independent state in Northern Italy. Since then, it has carried strong political connotations. // www.padaniaclassics.com
LOREM — ADVERSARIAL FEELINGS: 1 (2018) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ir9o5EI1cI The video (premièred by NTS Radio) was generated exploring the latent space of a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) trained on thousands of celebrities’ portraits and built by Thero Karras. The latent space is explored through an “elastic LERP” algorhythm designed by D’Abbraccio and Cattabiani. The Elastic LERP produces a completely synced video based on a transient-led analyse of the audio source. No editing has been made on the video.
LOREM — ADVERSARIAL FEELINGS: 2 (2019) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnB10FVWaQQ Music is live warped and stretched (using hacked Pioneer CDJ-900 NEXUS) to follow the original video by Google Arts and Culture researcher Damien Henry. The video, made with GANs, is based os a dataset of images made by a camera filming outside a train window. The NN tries to predict the next frame, building imaginary, glitched landscapes. Video was premièred by Boiler Room TV.
LOREM — ADVERSARIAL FEELINGS: 0 (2018) https://vimeo.com/301521106/20873d1375 The video is built “hacking” a photogrammetry in a very analogic way: modifying the shape of the physical model through small objects like balls, paper and plastic pills. In the music, a GAN is trying to learn english pronounciation. The speech sounds apparently a fluent english, even if the words pronounced has no meaning.
LOREM — ADVERSARIAL FEELINGS (BOOK) Texts in the book are written by a recurrent NN trained reading dozens of sci-fi novels about artificial intelligence, ranging from William Gibson to Richard Brautigan and Philip Dick. Thus, the network produces cryptic texts related someways to its own nature. With the collaboration of M. Hardiker.
BODIES ARE TEMPORARY / DATA IS FOREVER (2016) In 2016 I was invited to partecipe to the Italian Pavillion at London Design Biennale. The theme was Utopia (and its end), and I prepared a double installation (a 3d printed sculpture of my glitched son and a 3d AV holographic projection) entitled “Bodies are Temporary / Data is forever”. The installation was exposed at Triennale Design Museum in 2017, in the occasion of the collective exhibition “White Flag”. Big Data has become one of the key themes in the debate on representation policies and new technologies. From social networks to fitness apps, through to video games and cookies, GPS navigators and digital television, our data is being gathered and distributed among entities we know nothing about. When all these traces are put together, they make it possible to reconstruct the outer shell of who we are. The total accessibility of our transparent society is reversed in our absolute exposure to surveillance and monitoring devices. This data infrastructure does not simply accompany our entire existence, but it survives our death: for some months, for example, Facebook has given its users the opportunity to choose an heir to whom they can leave their credentials when they are gone. Bodies Are Temporary / Data is Forever raises a white flag in the face of this process. Instead of resisting our digitisation, the project attempts to speed it up, suspending all judgement and promoting a post-humanist aesthetic in which the fragility of our bodies and emotions is sublimated into the eternity of data. An intimate, private and fleeting moment like the embrace between a child – his son – and the mother is thus transfigured by a 3-D scanner, transformed into a sculpture and offered to visitors.
AUCAN — STELLE FISSE (2015) Aucan started as a experimental music band trio composed by a drummer (D. Dassenno) and two multi-instrumentalists (F. D’Abbraccio & G. Ferliga). Among the years the band evolved toward a more electronic sound (and it became a duo formed by D’Abbraccio and Ferliga). The project became something closer to an AV duo experimenting in digital electronic music. Active since 2009, the band played almost 400 gigs across the world in cultural centers, museums, festivals, galleries and music clubs. KRISIS | IDENTITIES I co-curated and layed out Krisis | Identities. K|I Is the first release by the publishing platform I cofounded, Krisis Publishing. Krisis | Identities is devoted to the emergency of identity and its representation; a complex issue which has been approached focusing on specific but related topics: the crisis of the identity of a territory, the cultural standardization, the flattening of the linguistic identity, the problem of how to represent the complexity of the identity. Today the crisis of identity means the crisis of the same idea of identity which from a perceptive and experiential process becomes more and more an everlasting ambition (a dream or hope) destined to remain unsatisfied. With contributions by Alvvino, Joerg Bader and Collective_fact, Mike Bertino, Emanuela Bonini Lessing, Brave New Alps and Dario Massimo, Valentina Ciarapica, Vincenzo D’Abbraccio, Nicolò De Giorgis, Experimental Jetset, Giulia Filippi, Stewart Home, Emanuele Kabu, Luca Luisa, Metahaven, Sosaku Myiazaki, Jeremy Naklè, Art_is_open_source, Jonmar Van Vljimen, Wu Ming, Evert Ypma.
KRISIS | ORIENTATION I curated and kayed out Krisis | Orientation (with Andrea Facchetti). K|O Is released by the publishing platyform I cofounded, Krisis Publishing, in collaboration with AIAP. Krisis | Orientation, the second volume of Krisis Magazine, is dedicated to disorientation and to the crisis of orientative models. That of disorientation is today a common experience, affecting people, communities, institutions and entire societies. In this scenario, it becomes crucial to rethink disorientation as an experience of renovation for new practices of orientation. With contributions by Art is Open Source, Ruedi Baur, BAVO, Cantiere per pratiche non-affermative, Piera Chiuppani, Melissa Destino, Detroiturbex.com, Hal Foster, Foundland, Réne König, Letra, Silvio Lorusso e Sebastian Schmieg, Enrico Manera, Michele Metelli, Yana Milev, Filippo Minelli, Sosaku Miyazaki, Bruno 9li, Serena Osti, Merijn Oudenampsen, Paolo Patelli / Danila Pellicani / Alessandro Contini, Daniela Piscitelli, Marco Quaggiotto, Pavel Maria Smejkal, Société Réaliste, Unità di crisi, Utilità Manifesta.
