Diva 40 Project Presentation THE DIVA LEGACY ! The very first Diva model, the Diva 39, was introduced back in 1982. Diva 39 It quickly became very successful and as recently as in 2011 the Diva 39 won it´s class at ÅFOR, the biggest offshore race in Scandinavia. In the years between the Diva 39 has won as many hearts as races and over 250 Diva 39´s were built. The Diva 39 introduced a new concept with focus not on rating rules but ease of handling, fast lines and a comfortable interior built in traditional Swedish style. It was the first long, narrow, light displacement yacht to take advantage of the latest research in yacht design. ! A couple of years later, in 1986, the Diva 35 was introduced and it was another innovative boat built partly in Kevlar and featured a fuller bow to create longer sailing lines. These features has since become very popular. The Diva 35 was also very successful and was built in over 300 exam- ples. ! The Diva 38 was introduced in 2001 and won the prestigious ”Boat of the Show” at Scandinavian Boat Show the same year. It featured some new innovations in both the interior- and exterior layout. The new Diva 35 came a cou- ple of years later and won the Tjörn Runt in 2011. Diva 35 Diva Yachts has a long history of innovation and success of which we are very proud. It is also a legacy that requires us to work hard to when developing new models, we do not just want to build a boat, we want to bring something new and better to sailors. ! ! Diva 38 ! ! ! ! !
Diva 40 Project Presentation ! ! DESIGN BRIEF The New Diva 40 is in some ways a modern iteration on the original Diva 39. The objective has been to create a yacht that is not ex- cessive in size, interior and concept. Pure lines, a clean layout, innovative solutions and a focus on joy of sailing and comfort. A true Sailors Yacht optimized for cruising and racing. A yacht that brings the Diva heritage into the future. The Diva 40 has moderate beam for it´s length. This brings a number of advantages. ! • Good all-around performance, especially upwind, which normally is about where 70% of the time is spent sailing. • Modern, high-tech construction utilizing the latest advances in materials, laminate plans and construction methods. • Interior layout and specification as on a 38-footer, but with the benefits of space of the 40 feet length. We have not tried to squeeze in excessive functions which results in an open and spacious feeling. • World renown Swedish build quality with a contemporary styling. The objective is a modern take on the classical ma- hogany interiors. • Light displacement for it´s length due to the well planned layout and modern build methods. • Because of the moderate displacement, the need for exaggerated sail areas is avoided, making the boat easy to handle for a family, and fast for the racer. • Price target set very aggressive relative to the build method, materials and quality. The attractive price is also a result of the low weight, smart interior planning and advances in build methods. • Facilitate different decks and layouts for a wider customer base. ! ! ! ! !
Diva 40 Project Presentation CONSTRUCTION The Diva 40 is engineered using the very latest technology. By utilizing the expert engineering skills of Composite Consult- ing Group the lamination plans and calculations makes the Diva 40 a safe, light and durable yacht. The Diva 40 is built in vacuum in- fused composite with a Divinycell foam core. Outer layers of vinylester resin, with the option of Epoxy, makes the yacht light and durable. The hull is vacuum infused in ”one shot” with reinforcement stringers and the interior base which results in a exceptionally light, strong and accurate hull, without the need for a heavy and complex innerliner. The keel has a lead bulb with a stainless steel fin with a moulded GRP profile. This makes the profile very accurate and repeatable. Both the rudder and the keel profiles are designed by Kåre Ljung of Americas Cup experience. The custom designed profiles provides a perfect combination of low drag and good lift, thus tending to both the experienced racer and the cruiser. As an option, the rudder and rudder stock are available in autoclaved carbon fiber. The weight saving is about 45 kg and it is surprisingly affordable. SPECIFICATIONS The specifications of the Diva 40 indicates a long waterline for its LOA, a moderate beam, a medium draft and a light displacement for its size. Ballast ratio is a solid 36% and the torpedo bulb keel, designed by renowned Kåre Ljung, gives the boat a very low cen- ter of gravity. The sail areas can be kept relatively manageable due to the light displacement and long waterline. Water and fuel ca- pacity can be specified as demanded and also water-maker, fuel cell or generator is optional. ! Diva 40 Project Presentation EXTERIOR The saying goes ”you only get one chance to make a first impression”. The dynamic design of the Diva 40 radiates per- formance, character and clean design. A design that not only gives an amazing first impression, but is intended to withstand the test of time. A modern shape firmly steeped in an Scandinavian tradition. The heritage from the original Diva 39 is there to be found for the connoisseur. There is also some elements of traditional Swedish yacht design. As always on a Diva Yacht, and in all good design, the user friendliness and ergonomics was at the hart of development.
Diva 40 Project Presentation DECK The deck has all lines led to the aft part of the cockpit, though one can´t see them. They are all led under deck thus provid- ing a clean look and also a safe deck to walk on. Forward of the shrouds, fixed to the hull sides, a bulwark provides a safe forward working deck, while also complying to ORC cat 3. There are also options for a racing deck layout where custom solutions are avail- able. On the deck superstructure a dark grey inlay conceals large flush deck hatches, providing both light and ventilation to the inte- rior. COCKPIT A 40 feet yacht gave us the opportunity to create a large cockpit optimized for comfort both at sail and at a mooring. The layout of- fers a forward section perfect or relaxing, and also a perfect working area for the racer. The cockpit has the ergonomics that the Diva Yachts is famous for. There is also an option of one or two steering wheels. In the cruising configuration the helmsman has the possibility to handle all sailing functions single handed.
Diva 40 Project Presentation INTERIOR The functions of the interior has to work for all aspects of the very special space a sailboat constitutes. It has to work for sleeping, cooking, eating, socializing, and not at least, the aspect that makes a sailboat interior a difficult mission to perfect; it has to work while the yacht heels and pitches. This is often the aspect where most boats fail. It takes experience of the ocean to understand the requirements of an interior in a sailboat. The measures and angles must be correct, it has to have support in places where people will stand or sit, it has to have what we call communication paths, so moving about in the yacht is easy and feels safe. The interior must also have an ambience, material selection and craftsmanship one can expect from an hand built luxury craft. In the Diva 40, we think we have achieved that. We have not fallen for the temptation to squeeze in too much in a limited space. Quite the contrary, the Diva 40 has the interior of a 38 footer in a 40 footer, not the other way around, as is often common in new boats. This results in an open, spacious and safe yacht with a lots of space for all features, stowage and entertaining. ! The Diva Yachts has always been known for innovative solutions and the new Diva 40 is no exception. !
Diva 40 Project Presentation OPEN SPACE LAYOUT With the new Diva 40 we are introducing a new solution for optimizing interior layout and comfort. It is based on studies of move- ment patterns in the interior space of a yacht. For example, how often is there movement between cockpit, WC and galley? What is the nature of the communication between the galley and settee? How can we facilitate easy transfer from the dinner table to other areas? How often is there movement from the cabins, and which cabins, and other areas onboard? And one of the main objectives, how can one avoid congestions between functions? The solution is quite obvious, and also has a Swedish heritage, it was used when Sweden was transformed to a modern country in the mid 1900. It was made scientifically with established measures for kitchen tops and functionality at heart. The fact is that the limited space a yacht interior offers is vital to plan in a very detailed manner. These studies has resulted in what we call the Open Space Layout. Compared to a traditional layout the Open Space Layout is more airy and the often separate and closed func- tions is opened up into a uncluttered unity. No more L-shaped galleys that causes a closes off the yacht and no U-shaped sofa that has the same result. Paths of communication and open area is prioritized. To achieve this we have reorganized the traditional solutions. Take the galley for example, a longi- tudinal galley is placed further aft compared to the traditional mid-ship solution. A new solution that gives more work area. The navigational place can have several configurations de- pending on demands and priority. The total result is a more open layout where functions onboard has a better access. Work areas and seating areas are larger compared to tradi- tional solutions. Our belief is that the Open Space Layout will give a more comfortable and ambient life onboard. ! ! !
Diva 40 Project Presentation GALLEY This is a galley for the foodie. It has a special layout and in true Diva fashion the chef has a perfect position that works well also in a seaway. An extra worktop, or a kitchen island, provides extra working area and doubles as space for fridge and the op- tional freezer. In total, there is an impressive 2,7 square meters of working area. The extra area also provides space for all the kitchenware needed to really cook, even at sea. By having an open space instead for the traditional L-shaped galley the communica- tion between galley and salon is better and more space is created. Another unique feature is the choice of having a view not only to the side of the yacht but also towards the cockpit. This is truly a galley for a top chef. WET AREA The Diva 40 features one large wet area. This is a choice based in the overall concept of the yacht in maximizing all functions on- board. A spacious wet area gives a luxurious feeling but also facilitates life onboard. There is room for a wet closet, wc, a large basin and a separate shower with it´s own entrance. A separate entrance for the shower facilitates the use of both areas simultane- ously and negates the need for two wet areas. As we build our Diva Yachts by hand, there is always the option of individualization and the option of a separate wet area in the owners cabin. OWNERS CABIN In the stern you will find a true Owners Cabin. A very large double berth that boasts a width, uncommon for a performance yacht, that makes it possible to sleep as at home, with the head towards a wall. A large floor area creates space and a settee gives comfort. Hull windows gives contact to the outside and adds to the feeling of an exclusive owners cabin. It is the perfect cabin for a comfort- able nights sleep. GUEST CABIN At the stern, on starboard side, the guest cabin offers so much space the owner might choose it for oneself. A wardrobe and a settee is basic features but the cabin can also be built with extra wardrobes or other storage space. The cabin can also be built as a luxury cabin with a generous double bed, plenty of storage space and a bedside table.
Diva 40 Project Presentation DEVELOPMENT Modern technology makes it possible to design and construct a yacht to an accuracy never seen before. The Diva 40 is designed using the very latest computer software. Therefor we already know a great deal about the performance and characteristics of the Diva 40. We know how fast it will be on all points of sail, thanks to the VPP. We know how it will perform on the largest race in north- ern Europe, thanks to routing software combined with the VPP and rating software. We know the righting moment and how much sail area is needed and we also know the approximate rating ac- cording to different rating rules. In designing the Diva 40, 20 different hull design candidates were compared and evaluated in different conditions and on both inshore and offshore courses. Together with our engineering partners we have optimized the laminate specification and build method to achieve a strong, safe and yet very light yacht for excellent handling for a family and good performance for racing. We have also utilized expert skills in achieving the very best keel and rudder foils on the market. In the development phase we have also conducted a thorough market research to establish main characteristics for the Diva 40 that exceeds what the market currently offers. ! An important feature for a Swedish yacht is the carpentry and the craftsmanship yachts from our part of the world are known for. Our objective with the new Diva range is to renew the traditional dark mahogany style and implement new design elements to create a lighter, softer and more modern feel. The foundation is still expert wood craftsmanship but now revitalized by introducing new materials and design features and solutions.
Diva 40 Project Presentation PERFORMANCE In designing the Diva 40, 5 main hull design candidates and up to 4 iterations of each main hull candidate were compared and evaluated. They were also evaluated in different conditions and on both inshore and offshore courses. The winning hull candidate was the overall winner with good all-around performance and performing especially good upwind without sacrificing downwind per- formance. After all, on average, 60-70% of the time on a race is spent upwind. The best hull candidates were then evaluated with different rig configurations and compared in races based on real life weather data, with the appropriate rating, using advanced routing software. They were also compared on W/L courses. The objective has not been to create a ”rule-beater” but to achieve excellent all-round performance, However, using modern rule evaluation software, an eye has been kept on rating to avoid unnecessary rating penalties. ! For the rudder, keel fin and bulb we have turned to an experienced aerospace engineer who has an unparalleled track record of de- signing foils. Kåre Ljung is well known for designing various projects while working for Marstrom Composites and has also designed for Americas Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, Imoca 60 and Orma 60 projects just to name a few. For the new Diva range he has designed custom sections with minimum drag and a good amount of lift. We have not gone to the extreme in mak- ing extremely thin foils but opted for sections that create the lift needed for good lift at low speed, up- wind performance and thus also tendering to the family cruiser. Our foils have an unparalleled drag to lift ratio that cannot simply be found on any other production yacht. For the racer we can also offer the complete rudder and stock in carbon fiber, with a weight saving of about 45 kg.
Diva 40 Project Presentation MARKET RESEARCH In developing the Diva 40 we carried out an extensive market research including most yachts of similar characteristics cur- rently available in Europe. In total over 35 yachts were considered in the survey. Our main objective was to establish a superior package that was to better or similar to any competitor, at a better price point. The main data used aside from price was perfor- mance indicating data such as LWL, sail area, displacement and ballast. Comparative numbers were established and the Diva 40 stands out in some key areas. The Diva 40 has a long waterline for it´s displacement and it has a good sail area relative to both dis- placement and wetted area. This indicates a yacht that will perform good going both up- and downwind and also be a good light airs yacht. The price comparison also stands out as great value for money, especially comparing to yachts with similar quality and per- formance. The yachts with comparable performance numbers have distinctly simpler interior craftsmanship and features, often lacking woodwork. !
Diva 40 Project Presentation ! ! CUSTOM ABILITIES We are not a production yard that have the limitations bigger yards often do. We have the possibility to adapt quickly and welcome input and suggestions from cus- tomers for their yacht. Our skilled craftsmen can build your yacht to match any wish or preference.
