Fox Hollow Men’s Club News March 2013 Welcome to 2013! With the golf season just around the corner I want to introduce you to our newsletter. The goal is a monthly electronic publication that includes information on: - Recent and upcoming events - Golf tips - Rules Q/A - Board news Your suggestions are not only welcome but needed. I have no background in writing and even less in publishing. Feel free to email me any ideas/corrections at jimodegard@yahoo.com 2012 saw nearly 190 members participate in the three leagues. In fact, 24 members participated in two leagues. There were over 75 opportunities to play in one of the men’s league events last year. Weather permitting we hope to host as many or more. If you know of anyone interested in golfing on a regular basis consider inviting them out. Many prospective members have the time for one of our leagues but feel they either lack the necessary skill or need to be part of a two or four man team on a weekly basis. Look for a new event in May. The 2-Man Best Ball will be played on the Gold course (Black to Gold) and is an “Open” event. Feel free to partner up with a non-member. Everyone will need a current handicap card to participate in the net payouts.
The long term success of the club will ultimately rest in growing the membership. Look for a new event in May. This 2-Man Best Ball will be played on the Gold course (Black to Gold) and is an “Open” event. Feel free to partner up with a non- member. Everyone will need a current handicap card to participate in the net payouts. New Membership Form for 2013 The 2013 membership application form is on the Fox Hollow website (under Men’s Club). Be sure to send your form and payment to the club’s mailing address or drop off at the upcoming Open House. http://www.foxhollowgolf.net/wp-content/uploads/MembershipApplication.pdf 2013 League/Team Chairman Wednesday 18 Jack Pryd/Jim Odegard Wednesday 9 Marc Carlson/Bob Faust Saturday 18 Mark Peterson/Tim Hoag 24 Man team Joe Sicora 16 Man team Marc Carlson 8 Man Senior Daryl Caldwell Men’s Club By-Laws Change The Board is recommending some changes to the By-Laws in a few areas this year. The reasons for the changes are to update the language, reduce the size of the board to six, allow for longer service on the board, and allow for new technologies in communication and record keeping (i.e. emails/GHIN). The recommended changes can be found at the Men’s Club website. http://www.foxhollowgolf.net/mens-ladies-club/mens-club-news If you have any comments on these changes please attend the General Meeting on March 23rd at 10:00am at Fox Hollow. These changes must be approved by a vote of the membership present at this meeting. If you want to have a chance to approve or reject these changes, you must attend the meeting in person.
From The Lesson Tee- Eric Larson, PGA Now that you've forgotten your New Year's Resolutions, it's time to start planning your New Golf Year's Resolutions. What is going to be different this season that will make you a better golfer? If you've tried new drivers or new putters or brush tees in the past, maybe it's time to look a little closer to home. The most common problems I see on the lesson tee (poor posture, inconsistent and insufficient body turn, elbows bending, over-the-top swing paths, and poor balance) all come from similar sources: Poor flexibility and an unstable core So save yourself the cost of a new set of clubs and spend a few minutes each day this late winter and early spring strengthening your core muscles and increasing your flexibility. How? Google and YouTube of course! A few simple searches reveal hundreds of golf-specific core and flexibility exercises. Here are a couple from reputable sources, even though one is for abdominal crunches and the other tells you not to do abdominal crunches: http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-instruction/2009-09/photos_abs_workout#slide=5 http://www.golfersmd.com/GolferMD_Articles/id/27.aspx For even more, go to YouTube and search for: golf fitness core OR golf fitness flexibility. Dozens of core and stretching exercises are at your fingertips, with demonstrations and tips from experts and athletes. And one last resource I'm reading right now is a book called: "Fix Your Body, Fix Your Swing." It has golf exercises to strengthen specific weaknesses in flexibility and muscles. The author worked with Vijay at the height of his powers, but he doesn't talk much about the deer antler spray. What can you expect from improved flexibility and a stronger core? 1. A longer swing arc resulting in the potential for more distance. 2. Increased power and swing speed from your stronger core. 3. More consistent results, especially at the end of your round when muscles get fatigued.
I suppose I should add the standard disclaimer that you should consult your doctor before attempting any of these exercises. So if you hurt yourself, don't blame me. And if you have any golf fitness questions, don't hesitate to ask. Bring on the Spring! Eric Rules Q/A All Fox Hollow Men’s Club events are played under the rules of golf defined by the United States Golf Association. The following defines how to handle some of the most common rules situations we will encounter: COLORED STAKES & LINES: A regular water hazard Defined by yellow stakes or lines Any body of water that sits between you and the hole Includes the water AND the turf on the edges A lateral water hazard Defined by red stakes or lines Any body of water that sits to one side of the hole. Includes the water AND the turf on the edges The boundaries of both hazards extend upward and downward and any lines or stakes outlining the hazard are part of the hazard. If your ball is resting on the line defining the hazard....you're in the hazard. DON'T GROUND YOUR CLUB, If you do, you will be assessed a one (1) stroke penalty for each occurrence. You have three choices for regular water hazards (yellow stakes): 1) If the ball is playable, play it with no penalty, but do not ground your club before doing so. 2) If it's not playable, find the spot where your ball last crossed the hazard margin. Keep that spot between you and the hole. You can drop your ball anywhere on that imaginary line, as far back as you like. You must drop behind the water even
if your ball landed on the other side and rolled back into the water. You are assessed one (1) penalty stroke. 3) The final option is to go back to the spot where you played the shot into the hazard and hit another ball. A one (1) stroke penalty is assessed + distance. So if it was your tee shot, you would now be hitting 3 from the tee. If the hazard is a lateral hazard (red stakes), you have the same option as the regular hazard above, plus two more. 1) Find the spot where the ball crossed the hazard margin. Drop your ball within two club lengths, no nearer the hole. One (1) penalty stroke is assessed. 2) Find a spot on the opposite side of the hazard that is the same distance from the hole as the spot where your ball crossed the hazard margin. Drop a ball within two club lengths of that spot, no nearer the hole. A one (1) stroke penalty is assessed. Rules covering water hazards can be found in the USGA Rules of Golf, Rule 26. Reminder of some of the Course/Club Rules The following local rules override USGA rules. - Stones in bunkers are moveable obstructions. See USGA rule 24-1. - A ball hit into the water on hole #3 (front nine) may be played from the designated drop area on the island. The drop area will be a white circle. There are NO OTHER drop areas on any hole on any of the 3 nines. Drop areas you see anywhere else are for other leagues. - If there is some question as to whether a ball hit into or near a water hazard is playable or not, the player may play a provisional ball. This is not allowed by USGA rules but we have created this local rule to speed up play.
