To inspire philanthropy for the benefit of Washington County. Foundation News Summer 2018 The Community Foundation of Washington County MD, Inc. is a tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people of Washington County, MD. From the President/CEO Happy summer! I am so excited to join the Community Foundation of Washington County as the new president/CEO. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you over the next few months. For those of you who don’t know me, I served as director of college advancement at Hagerstown Community College (HCC) for the past six years where I was responsible for the management and administration of the HCC Foundation, HCC Alumni Associ- ation and an independent volunteer board. While there, I worked to cultivate relation- ships with prospective donors, corporations and foundations to secure major gifts and grants. Prior to HCC, I served as the major gift officer at Meritus Health working with major donors to support capital needs, programs and services at the Hospital. I am a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and a member of both Leadership Washing- ton County Class 2017 and Leadership Frederick County Class 2010. I am originally from Westminster, Maryland, but have lived in Hagerstown since 2003. My first two months have been very exciting as I started as Washington County Gives, (pg. 4) wrapped up and Scholarship Season kicked off (pg. 3). I also got to participate in the grants ceremony for the Mary K. Bowman Fund for Historical & Fine Arts, (pg. 5) and the Women’s Giving Circle recently gave away $14,000 in grants to nine nonprofits. (pg. 3) We have given away a lot of money since I came on board! I love seeing the impact the Foundation has on our community. Don’t forget, we still have credits available for the 2018 Endow Maryland Tax Credit. This credit allows Washington County residents to claim a 25% state tax credit when they create or give to an unrestricted community endowment fund, field of interest or designated fund at the Community Foundation. Donors must contribute at least $500 to a community endowment fund or a minimum of $5,000 to create their own named endowment to support one of six areas of interest. Designated funds also require a $5,000 commitment, and you can specify one or more organizations that will receive annual or periodic distributions that you desig- nate as grant beneficiaries. Please feel free to call me at (301) 745-5210 or stop by when you are downtown! 1
Kristy Says Farewell In June of 2003, I came to the Community Foundation of Washington County as a temporary administrative assistant. My plan was to work a few months while I figured out my next career move. Turned out my next career move was to stay 15 years and grow with the Foundation, and grow we have! Often, and rightly so, our trustees and president speak of the increase in assets over the years, or the number of funds, or our impeccable investment record. Those are important milestones. However, there are other less tangible advancements of which I am most proud. Perhaps the best thing about the Community Foundation is how we make philanthropy accessible to everyone, whether the gift is $10 or as great as $1 million. In my tenure here, we have established trust and lasting rela- tionships with a diverse donor base with interests in areas as broad as youth programming and as narrow as community gardening. Walking hand in hand with families, we have memorialized many young lives through scholarship funds. Nonprofit organizations look to us for investment in current needs through our many grant- ing outlets and in long-term planning through the establishment of endowment funds. The Foundation connects needs with resources and resources with needs in a way only an agenda-free organization can. These relation- ships are our greatest strength, and I am honored to have been a part of their development. For years, I have said I have the best job in Washington County, and I still feel that way. The Community Foundation staff and board consist of quality people. I have had the opportunity to know and work alongside current and emerging community leaders and create lasting friendships in an ever-widening circle. It’s difficult to leave, but I go with a skill set I have collected over the years that will help me determine what’s next in my new community. Thank you, CFWC and thank you Washington County. I wish you God’s blessings always. Newest Funds of the Foundation George Auxt Fund for Big Brothers Big Sisters Conservit, Inc.
