Sabbatical Proposal for Academic Year 2022-2023 Submitted by Marnie Melendez, Ed.D. 1. Statement of Purpose The purpose of my sabbatical is to engage in academic study at a regionally- accredited institution of higher education. I plan to enroll in Race, Ethnicity, and Education (LLSS 529) and Social Justice in Education (EDUC 552) at the University of New Mexico. In addition, I will enroll in Ensuring Equitable Students Success in High Education program at The Harvard Institutes for Higher Education. Rationale Moorpark College (MC) has experienced a racial and social justice awakening over the past 18 months. We empower learners from local, national, and global backgrounds to complete their degree, certificate, transfer, and career education goals. Through the integration of innovative instruction and customized student support, our programs are designed to achieve equitable outcomes”. To ensure that will uphold the mission, vision, and values of Moorpark College, we additional education and training. Through an equity-mindedness lens grounded in critical race theory, we can disrupt institutional racism that is pervasive in higher education. Student demand has a learning environment that is equitable, anti-racist, and inclusive. a. Professional Development I would like advance training in race-conscious practice. I will take personal inventory of my own implicit bias that requires an equity-minded approach. This program is a Social Justice Program created out of the civil rights movement over 50 years ago. The role of EOPS at the college demands that the staff working in this program need to be highly trained in working with our DI population.
