A MESSAGE FROM MIKE Greater Long Island Running Club Officers and Executive Board This will be my last Message in Long Island Footnotes. My President, Mike Polansky buddy Jossi Fritz-Maurer will be taking over as President in Executive Director, Katie Pearlman January, and I am sure that his monthly Messages will be far Vice President, Mindy Davidson more inspirational and informative than mine have been. Vice President, Carl Grossbard* Treasurer, Melissa Altschuler I would like to close out my years as President by extolling Secretary, James Murray the virtues of four people who have been so instrumental in the success of our Club over the decades, and who it has been Coordinator of Development, Ken Carmel my pleasure to work with. Social Media Coordinator, Suzanne Nelson Logistics Manager, Melaine Balsdon First and foremost is my amazing wife Sue Polansky. We have been married for 58 Co-Directors, Caumsett Runs, Carl Grossbard*, Jim Murray years, and for 43 of those years she has been at my side for our increasing involvement Director, Lazer, Aptheker, Rosella & Yedid Kings Park 15K, (she might say “all-consuming involvement”) in the Club and the Long Island running Steven Toto community generally. Anything that I have accomplished over the years would simply Director, L.I. Greenbelt Trail Run, Nick Palazzo* not have been possible without Sue. Director, Marcum Workplace Challenge, Mindy Davidson Then there’s Mindy Davidson. I first met Mindy while we were both running the Alley Director, Fred von der Heydt Memorial 6 Hour 60th Pond 5 Miler sometime around 1987, and we have been part of each others’ lives ever Birthday Run, Myron Bellovin* since. Mindy has served the Club in every imaginable role over the past 35 or so years, Director, Runner’s Edge L.I. Women’s Run and has always put forth an energy and enthusiasm that is almost unimaginable....if Sue Fitzpatrick you didn’t know Mindy. Without her, the Club would have floundered long ago, and I Co-Directors, Runner’s Edge-TOBAY Triathlon, thank her for her service, and mostly for being my friend. Ray Farrell, Mindy Davidson Director, Sayville Running Company 10 Mile Run to the Nick Palazzo has been a close friend and an invaluable colleague since the mid- Blue Point Brewery, Great South Bay Brewery Runs, Port 1980s. He and I have traveled the roads and trails together all over the country – the Jeff Brewery Run, Ric Diveglio Wasatch Mountains, Vermont, Western States, Death Valley and on and on, with him Director, David Lerner Associates Police Appreciation Run as the elite runner and me as the crew member and pacer. Nick has reciprocated by & TOB Supervisor’s 5K, Mike Polansky being anywhere and everywhere he has been needed to help the Club. I can never see a Co-Directors, Lynn Gartner Dunne, LLP Rob’s Run finish line structure without thinking of Nick and how dedicated he has been in putting Jim Murray, Sue Fitzpatrick together the physical presence of our races over the years. Co Directors, UJA - Federation Race Against Poverty Steve & Holly Jonas, Mindy Davidson Ric DiVeglio has been a GLIRC superstar for what seems like forever, as a Race Director Director, Ocean to Sound Relay, Bob Sherman of the Heart & Sole 5K, the Ho Ho Ho Run, and our many, many Brewery Runs. His Gold Coast/Steel Equities Ho Ho Ho Holiday Run patience and success in dealing with local officials and the police are unparalleled. He Ric Diveglio and Kathy have been an important part of our Club for many years, and I value them Club & Team Coach, Ed Melnik as close personal friends. Blood Drive Director, Gina Gelman These four stand out in my mind, but there are many, many other folks who I have Scholarship Program Director, Paul Englehart worked with over the decades who space will permit me only to mention in passing – Membership Director, Sherry Bellovin Carl Grossbard, Curt & Irene Robinson, Peter & Wendy Martin, Linda Ottaviano, Sue Senior Feet Coordinator, Bert Jablon Fitzpatrick, Barry Aronowsky, Bob & Sue Cook, Burt & Myra Jablon, Frank & Chris Trustees at Large, Alan Baisch, Amy Goldstein, Saniyyah Martin, Rick & Debbie Secor, Myron & Sherry Bellovin, Betty Tiska, Betty Grayson, Greene, Scott Fairgrieve, Paul Fetscher, Lou LaFleur, Jossi Debbie Blair, Erica Gassen, Brendan Barrett, Ed Melnik, Bob Sherman, Jim Murray, Fritz-Mauer, Glenn Morse, Robert Tollin Glen Wolther, Scott Fairgrieve, Jim & Doreen McDougall, Alan & Sharon End, Bill *Denotes Board members Gironda, Cheryl Clifford. Barbara Ronzetti, Bob Savino, Steve & Holly Jonas, Amy FOOTNOTES: Goldstein, Barbara & Jack Stagnari, Paul Fetscher....the list could go on forever, and I Volume 21, Issue 12, DECEMBER 2021 apologize to everyone that I should have mentioned but didn’t.
