A MESSAGE FROM JOSSI Greater Long Island Running Club President, Jossi Fritz-Mauer A few years ago, I reunited with some college running Executive Director, Katie Pearlman buddies. Not surprisingly, we decided to go for a run together. Vice President, Mindy Davidson One of my friends had forgotten his running shoes, but as Vice President, Carl Grossbard Treasurer, Melissa Altschuler luck would have it, we realized that not only were we the same Secretary, James Murray size, but we each wore the same make and model of shoe! I President Emeritus, Mike Polansky lent him an extra pair and we all headed out. Within a couple Coordinator of Development, Ken Carmel of miles, he begged off and said he couldn’t do it anymore – Social Media Coordinator, Suzanne Nelson* Footnotes Editor, Carolyn Mazzola everything just felt wrong with the shoes and he was going to Logistics Manager, Melaine Balsdon walk home. As it turns out, it’s not so easy to walk (or run) a mile in someone else’s Director, SRC 10 Mile Run to the Blue Point Brewery, shoes. Jossi Fritz-Mauer* Director, Icebreaker Marathon/Half, Katie Pearlman That is how I feel at this moment as I begin my term as President of GLIRC, taking Coach, Run Smart Training Program, Laura Ryan over for my good friend Mike Polansky. How does one follow in the footsteps of someone Director, Great South Bay Brewery Runs, Port Jeff Brewery who co-founded the Club? Who has been intricately involved in the Club for over 40 Run, Ric DiVeglio* years? The phrase “big shoes to fill” doesn’t even begin to do this moment justice. Co-Directors, Heckscher State Park 50K and 25K Runs, Carl Grossbard*, Jim Murray* When I have seen people recently, a common refrain has been that I am replacing Mike. Director, The Neil Chadderton Memorial EisnerAmper Race No, there is no replacing Mike Polansky. It’s simply not possible. But I am grateful that to Feed Long Island’s Hungry, Jim Murray* he has been working closely with me to make the handoff as smooth as possible. And Director, TOBAY Beach Spring Run for Suicide Prevention, Mindy Davidson* I am finding myself very excited by the challenges ahead, eager to actualize a vision for Director, Greenbelt Trail 50K/25K, Nick Palazzo future success, and most of all, humbled to try to build on this incredible legacy. Director, DLA Police Appreciation Run, Mike Polansky Director, Women’s Run, Sue Fitzpatrick* While we may no longer have the leadership of Mike Polansky, I am immensely Director, Marcum Workplace Challenge, Mindy Davidson* Co-Directors, Runners Edge-TOBAY Triathlon, Ray Farrell, grateful that so many of the wonderful things remain that make GLIRC special: my Mindy Davidson* fellow Board of Trustees, featuring a great combination of longtime dedicated individuals Co-Directors, UJA Federation Race Against Poverty, and new additions sure to bring their valued perspectives; a wonderful partnership Steve & Holly Jonas, Mindy Davidson* with businesses and charities that we support as part of our mission; and of course, a Director, Ocean to Sound Relay, Bob Sherman Director, 6 Hour 60th Birthday Run, Myron Bellovin* membership passionate about our shared love of running, fitness, and volunteerism. Co-Directors, Rob’s Run, Sue Fitzpatrick*, Jim Murray* Everyone reading this knows that running is far from an individual pursuit, and I really Director, Gold Coast/Steel Equities/Gold Coast Studios look forward to working with all of you to move this Club forward. Ho Ho Ho Holiday Run, Ric DiVeglio* Club & Team Coach, Ed Melnik Scholarship Program Director, Paul Engelhart Last but not least, there is one other thing that makes this Club special: the events Membership Dierctor, Sherry Bellovin we put on! A new year is upon us and I am very excited to begin anew with our slate Senior Feet Coordinator, Bert Jablon of races. Coming up this month, we have the return of the sold out SRC 10 Mile Run Trustees at Large, Allison Backer, Alan Baisch, Frank Capone, Barbara Davis, Scott Fairgrieve, Paul Fetscher, to the Blue Point Brewery on January 15th. And shortly after that is the Icebreaker Amy Goldstein, Trent Hampton, Glenn Morse, Thaddeus Marathon and Half Marathon on January 23rd, with spots still available for anyone Nelson looking to get in a good effort in Eisenhower Park. Whether you join us for these * Denotes Board members events or as part of future races, I look forward to getting to know many of you better and working with you to make this Club one we can all be proud of. 2022 Herb & Betty Grayson Memorial Scholarship Application Name ______________________________________________________________________________________ Address ______________________________________________________________________________________ Phone ______________________________________________________________________________________ Email ______________________________________________________________________________________ School ______________________________________________________________________________________ Scholarship: A check in the amount of $2000 will be awarded to one or more graduating Nassau or Suffolk County high school seniors, chosen on the basis of involvement in, and service to, the Long Island running community. In order to qualify for the Scholarship, you must submit a paper describing your involvement in, and service to, the running community, as well as your personal running accomplishments. Please keep in mind that we are not necessarily interested in the star of the high school track or cross-country team. Instead, for example, we want to recognize the student who helped raise funds to send the team to an out-of-town meet, or who helped organize a road race or track meet to help out a local charity. The key is that this is a SERVICE-oriented scholarship rather than one based on athletic accomplishments. * Submitted papers are to be a maximum of three pages in length, typed and double-spaced. * Please also provide the names and contact information of two references (no relatives please). Applications may be submitted online via Google Form (see glirc.org for details) with all attachments ON OR BEFORE APRIL 4, 2022. Alternately, a hard copy may be mailed to the attention of the Scholarship Program Director and must be POSTMARKED ON OR BEFORE APRIL 4, 2022: Paul Englehart, Scholarship Program Director Greater Long Island Running Club 101 Dupont St #24 Ste 24 Plainview, NY 11803 6 FOOTNOTES JANUARY 2022 GLIRC
