Food Sovereignty - Food sovereignty is a relatively new concept which tries to realize an alternative food system. The term food sovereignty was first used by Via Campesina, which is a global peasant movement. - According to Via Campesina, food sovereignty is the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their food and agriculture systems. (Food Secure Canada) - A Global Gathering: In 2007 at the Forum for Food Sovereignty in Nyéléni, Declaration Nyéléni was made. In the Forum, there were more than 500 representatives from more than 80 countries. - According to the declaration, organizations of peasants/family farmers, artisanal fisherfolk, indigenous peoples, landless peoples, rural workers, migrants, pastoralists, forest communities, women, youth, consumers and environmental and urban movements have joined the Forum in the village of Nyéléni in Sélingué, Mali to strengthen a global movement for food sovereignty. They prepared Declaration Nyéleni for food sovereignty. Copyright © 2020 by Kök Projekt. All rights reserved
Declaration Nyéléni - According to the Declaration of the Forum for Food Sovereignty, Nyéléni 2007; «Food sovereignty is the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems. It puts the aspirations and needs of those who produce, distribute and consume food at the heart of food systems and policies rather than the demands of markets and corporations. It defends the interests and inclusion of the next generation. It offers a strategy to resist and dismantle the current corporate trade and food regime, and directions for food, farming, pastoral and fisheries systems determined by local producers and users. Food sovereignty prioritizes local and national economies and markets and empowers peasant and family farmer-driven agriculture, artisanal - fishing, pastoralist-led grazing, and food production, distribution and consumption based on environmental, social and economic sustainability.» (Declaration Nyéléni, 2007). Global Challenge - The concept of food sovereignty advocates an alternative food and agriculture system. - Today, the definition of food sovereignty and its application is still unclear as it has many dimensions. However, conventional farming systems are unsustainable. - By 2050, global agriculture systems will need to feed more than 9 billion people safely and sustainably. - Intensification based agriculture ensured an increase in yields. Yet, our food system is under stress. Climate change, use of pesticides, water, soil, and air pollution threatens agricultural production. - Even if there is enough food production, a considerable number of people suffer from hunger and malnutrition. Making Agriculture Sustainable - There is an international consensus to overcome global challenges, and agricultural methods should be revised. - Agricultural methods were one of the main topics of the 2013 UN Conference. - One of the key message of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in 2013 was that «the world needs a paradigm shift in agricultural development.» From conventional, monocultural-based, and high external input dependant industrial production towards mosaics of sustainable, regenerative production systems that also help the improvement of small scale farmers. (UNCTAD, 2013) - For durable and environmentally friendly agriculture, apart from food sovereignty, new concepts such as agroecology, organic farming, regenerative agriculture, etc. arose. Technology and Food Sovereignty - Although technology can not be a silver bullet for challenges of food and agriculture, it could help to achieve some objectives. - Food Sovereignty concept prioritizes farmers' welfare. In a food, sovereign agriculture, farmers can earn a fair, liveable wage while farming sustainably. Many farmers lack the financial resources to access the necessary inputs for their farms. This situation causes farmers to not get enough income from their farming practices. (FAO, 2018) - Precision agriculture measures variations in conditions within a field and adapts strategies accordingly. It helps to do more with less input and improves sustainability. Precision farming also helps collect accurate and real-time data that farmers can use to reduce costs and increase yields while preventing environmental damage. - Food Sovereignty promotes to work with nature and tries to increase resilience. Chemicals used in agriculture to improve yields damage soil, air, and water. Bio- pesticides offer a sustainable way of agriculture by minimizing or eliminating pesticide use. - -Today several startups are working to provide financial resources for farmers, working on smart technologies, and bio-pesticides. CropX Era of Data-Driven Farming - CropX is a US-based agriculture analytics company. The company helps to optimize input applications leading to significant water, fertilizer, energy, and labor savings. - The company aims to make farming sustainable again by using technology. According to CropX, if we want sustainable agriculture, we must start taking care of soils. - To get the data, they put sensors on the field. Then raw information is collected by the Sensors and transmitted to the CropX cloud, where it is analyzed by their software and made available via mobile application and website. - CropX offers several features. Adaptive Variable-rate Irrigation Management and Automation can help figure out how much to water the field. Another feature is Crop Specific Management, which can predict the crop’s needs and expected growth. Copyright © 2020 by Kök Projekt. All rights reserved
Crop Enhancement Chemistry for a Sustainable Agriculture - Crop Enhancement was founded in the USA. They explain their mission as «Empower every grower with sustainable products that improve agriculture and protect our planet.» - Crop Enhancement innovates sustainable chemistry formulations for agriculture to eliminate or minimize pesticide use. - They have developed the CropCoat platform, which uses nontoxic formulations to shield crops from pests and environmental damage. - CropCoat forms a film that modifies plant surfaces (leaves, stems, fruit, and seeds) to improve their resistance to pests and diseases and to decrease the need for harmful pesticides.
