In more exact terms, LQ’s are a ratio that compares a smaller regional group to a larger reference region according to the same characteristic or asset. An LQ of 1 is equally concentrated within both areas. An LQ of 1.5 indicates that the smaller geographic region is 50% more concentrated regionally, and an LQ of 2 indicates the geographic region is twice as concentrated regionally. An LQ of 0.5 indicates the smaller geographic region is 50% less concentrated against the larger geographic area
Analyzing critical mass by occupations helps paint a robust picture of regional labor presence and workforce supply. The top ten manufacturing and distribution related occupations are shown below and employ over 118,000 regional residents as a collective group. o 75% of these occupations have a Location Quotient (LQ) score greater than 1, and a collective average LQ of 1.68. This indicates that these labor force is 68% more concentrated in the Memphis MSA than in comparable regions. o The two occupations with the highest Location Quotients (General Transportation Labor and General Production Labor) allow for a great deal of versatility in occupational duties without a high level of specialization. 2020 Median Median 2020 Industry Description Location Hourly Annual Jobs Quotient Earnings Earnings Distribution Laborers and Freight, Stock, and Material Movers, Hand 36,196 3.01 $14.36 $29,869 Distribution Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers 14,710 1.90 $23.23 $48,308 Distribution Stockers and Order Fillers 14,217 1.51 $13.69 $28,475 Distribution Light Truck Drivers 8,715 2.16 $17.73 $36,878 Production Miscellaneous Assemblers and Fabricators 6,180 1.14 $15.85 $32,970 Distribution Industrial Truck and Tractor Operators 5,813 2.11 $16.35 $34,015 First-Line Supervisors of Transportation and Material Moving Distribution 5,337 2.66 $26.43 Workers, Except Aircraft Cargo Handling Supervisors $54,983 Distribution Packers and Packagers, Hand 4,396 1.69 $12.05 $25,067 Production Production Workers, All Other 3,308 3.80 $12.22 $25,412 Production First-Line Supervisors of Production and Operating Workers 2,964 1.16 $26.80 $55,748 Production Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers 2,557 1.08 $17.17 $35,717 Production Machinists 2,239 1.48 $23.38 $48,623 Production Packaging and Filling Machine Operators and Tenders 2,067 1.29 $15.13 $31,463 Passenger Vehicle Drivers, Except Bus Drivers, Transit and Distribution 1,996 0.80 $11.07 Intercity $23,018 Distribution Driver/Sales Workers 1,559 0.84 $11.83 $24,614 Production Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers 1,471 0.88 $21.57 $44,859 Distribution Cleaners of Vehicles and Equipment 1,394 0.94 $12.62 $26,258 Production Food Batchmakers 1,227 1.84 $19.81 $41,195 Production Paper Goods Machine Setters, Operators, and Tenders 989 2.32 $18.19 $37,838 Production Helpers--Production Workers 979 0.96 $13.63 $28,350 118,314 1.68 $17.16 $35,683 Located just across the Tennessee border in Horn Lake, Mississippi, is Newly Weds Foods. As compared to 2014, this is a CAGR of 8% for these programs in the region. Completion of all regionally available post-secondary education programs grew from 2014 to 2019 by 6%, with the largest increase in Doctoral Degree program completions at 156%. In 1859, 16-year-old Domenico Canale immigrated from Italy to Memphis to help his uncle operate a modest fruit cart downtown. A mere seven years later he began a small food and liquor distribution business which grew into the largest grocery distribution operation in the region due to the logistic access provided by the Mississippi river. More than a century-and-a-half of prosperity and success followed the D. Canale Company until it was sold in 2010. Honoring their great, great grandfather’s legacy of hard work an innovation, two Canale family sons opened the Old Dominick Distillery in 2017 near the site of the original company’s headquarters. This marks the first time since prohibition that whiskey has been legally distilled in Memphis, Tennessee.
MEMPHIS DELIVERS. ROAD 3RD BUSIEST TRUCKING CORRIDOR Leveraging its sophisticated roadway infrastructure, inbound and outbound commodities distributed via roadway amounted to nearly $250 billion and close to 75 million tons of cargo passing through the region in 2017. This volume represents approximately 70% of the region’s total freight motion. The newest additions to the Memphis MSA’s already robust system of roadways are the I-269 beltway surrounding Memphis and its suburbs (already open), and the I-69 corridor connecting Memphis diagonally to southern Texas and eastern Michigan. I-69 is currently segmented along its proposed route.
