AVI50215 Diploma of Avia2on (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) Welcome Introduc2on The AVI50215 Diploma of Avia*on (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) course is for individuals who want to work as a pilot in the avia*on industry. It prepares you for employment with domes*c or interna*onal airlines and charter companies. The training partnership between TAFE NSW and Sydney Flight College (SFC) is designed to deliver you an excep*onal learning experience with strong employment outcomes. Through TAFE NSW eligible candidates will have access to a VET Student Loan to assist with the costs of training. The course focuses on theory and prac*cal training: • THEORY: You will have face-to-face classes at the TAFE NSW Ul*mo Campus. Studying on campus means you’ll have access to the extensive student services and support TAFE NSW offers. At the successful comple*on of your course, TAFE NSW will present you with your AVI50215 Diploma of Avia*on (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) cer*ficate and course transcript. • PRACTICAL: the prac*cal, flying component will take place at Sydney Flight College (SFC) where you’ll learn in a modern, purpose-built training facility at Bankstown Aerodrome. You’ll have easy access to the SFCs growing aircrae fleet, which boasts: • single-engine aircrae including: Piper Warriors, Archers, C206, C172, C178, and a Cirrus SR22T • mul*-engine aircrae including Beechcrae Duchess, DA62 and Beechcrae Baron • a synthe*c Redbird flight trainer. Through our training partnership: • Your applica*on will be screened carefully by TAFE NSW and Sydney Flight College to ensure you have the ap*tude and skills required to succeed in the course • You will be enrolled as a TAFE NSW student, giving you access to a range of support services including libraries and student counsellors • You will study using the TAFE NSW learning model, assessment tools and resources • You will be assessed by TAFE NSW teachers (for theory elements) and Sydney Flight College assessors (for prac*cal ac*vi*es). Course details Over 12-months, training in the na*onally accredited AVI50215 Diploma of Avia*on (Commercial Pilot Licence - Aeroplane) course covers 29 units of competency. The 29 units will equip you with the knowledge and skills to perform a range of tasks, including: • Applying technical and non-technical avia*on skills and knowledge • Flight crew du*es • Passenger transport opera*ons • Charter and cargo opera*ons • Aircrae opera*on • Visual and instrument flight • Take-off and landing procedures • Naviga*on skills • Meteorology and weather condi*ons planning • Radio opera*on. Qualifica2on outcomes Successfully comple*ng this course earns you two cer*ficates: 1. Diploma of Avia2on (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) 2. Commercial Pilot Licence – this is the minimum requirement to fly commercially in Australia You will gain the skills, experience and confidence to fill the role of flight crew personnel performing normal and emergency commercial pilot du*es in support of commercial flight opera*ons. Flight crew du*es include applying technical and non-technical avia*on skills and knowledge to a wide range of air transport opera*ons, including passenger, charter and cargo opera*ons. Working at this level you will apply your knowledge and skills and demonstrate autonomy, judgement and defined responsibility in known or changing contexts and within broad but established parameters. This qualifica*on forms some of the requirements for cer*fica*on as a commercial pilot by the Civil Avia*on Safety Authority (CASA) as directed by Civil Avia*on Safety Regula*on (CASR) Part 61 Flight crew licensing. Industry requirements The Civil Avia*on Safety Authority (CASA), under Civil Avia*on Safety Regula*on (CASR), regulates the Part 61 Flight Crew Licensing standard, which outlines requirements for cer*fica*on as a commercial pilot. These requirements are integrated in the Diploma of Avia*on qualifica*on, with your final Diploma competency determina*on happening at the same *me as the gran*ng of your Commercial Pilot Licence. Your prac*cal training takes place primarily in single-engine aeroplanes in accordance with the CASA CASR Part 61 Flight Crew Licensing requirements. Once you have achieved the licence, the privileges include the authorisa*on to co-pilot specific aircrae in opera*on as the pilot in command. How to apply To ensure that you are successful in your avia*on training and enjoy your *me with TAFE NSW and SFC we have rigorous student entry requirements and a three-part screening process. If you have previous flying experience or have undertaken previous studies you may be eligible for Recogni*on of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer. Recogni2on Credit Transfer (CT) – you can apply for credit if you have previously completed a unit in this Qualifica*on/ Course at TAFE NSW or another Registered Training Organisa*on (RTO). Recogni2on of Prior Learning (RPL) – you can apply to have your previous study, work and or life experiences recognised. Visit TAFE NSW for further informa*on about Credit Transfer and Recogni*on of Prior Learning, or discuss this with your course advisor and interview panel. Entry requirements To succeed in this course you will need strong Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills. Aircrae performance calcula*ons demand advanced numeracy skills while you will need good English language skills to interpret exam ques*ons asked by the Civil Avia*on Safety Authority (CASA). You will also need good language skills to communicate effec*vely while face-to-face as well as using an aeronau*cal radio, par*cularly in high-pressured situa*ons. If the results show you need to improve your literacy and numeracy skills we will recommend further literacy and numeracy training with TAFE NSW. There are three components to the screening process: 1. Pre-screening mee2ng: The ini*al part of the applicant screening process is an informal 30 minute mee*ng with a course advisor. Discussion topics will include: • Your knowledge and any experience of avia*on • Any previous experience and study which will lead to Recogni*on of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer • Your career ambi*ons on comple*on of the course • Progress you have made towards gathering entry requirements: ARN, Medical Class 1 and ASIC • Informa*on about the course structure and required commitment • Any need to undertake the five session Flight Experience Package before enrolment • Informa*on about the online assessment covering problem solving, mul*-tasking, ap*tude and the literacy and numeracy assessment used to determine suitability for the course • Informa*on about course fees, out-of-pocket expenses and costs for repea*ng course elements (you will be directed to TAFE NSW for informa*on about VET Student Loans and given a contact with TAFE NSW for further informa*on). Your course advisor will monitor your progress in comple*ng the entry requirements as you move through the screening process. 2. Screening assessment Once you have gathered the pre-requisite informa*on and details you will have an opportunity to complete the assessments. Results of the screening assessments will form part of the conversa*on during the screening interview which will typically take place within 2 weeks following the screening assessments. 3. Screening interview The screening interview takes place over one hour. The panel that will include senior staff from TAFE NSW and Sydney Flight College. Topics of discussion may include: • Your previous experience or performance during the Flight Experience Package • Results from screening assessments and recommenda*ons for further study if required before acceptance into the Diploma • Entry requirement evidence already provided and to be provided • Ques*ons to determine your level of interest and engagement with a career in avia*on. verbal offer if you have been successful. Note: To receive an offer of enrolment you must successfully complete all entry requirements - including aVendance at screening events. Course fees and other costs Course Fees AVI50215 Diploma of Avia2on (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) Course fees are available from Sydney Flight College. Contact our course advisor on 0456 500 460. VET Student Loan (VSL) You may be eligible for a VET Student Loan (VSL) to cover a por*on of the course cost. It is important that you read the eligibility for, and terms & condi*ons of, such loans at tafensw.edu.au. Of the course cost, $77,571 is available under the VET Student Loan Scheme to eligible applicants. If you take out a VET Student Loan for this part of the course fee you will be required to pay the gap por*on of the fee on each of six instalments. These instalments are called a Unit of Study (UOS) and each UOS has a specific due date known as the Census Date. Resources and equipment Resources are an integral support to both your prac*cal and theore*cal training. The Typical student spends on average between $1750 and $3000 on textbook, reference books, avia*on charts, naviga*on equipment and a pilot’s headset. It is important to note that by nature the course requires ongoing personal expenditure to maintain your required current charts and CASA documents. Flight Tes2ng Charges To complete your CASA licenses as part of this course you will require prac*cal flight tests with CASA delegated flight-tes*ng officers. The typical student spends on average $1500 for flight tes*ng officers during the course. A list of resources and how to purchase them will be provided to you on enrolment.
