\ February 2022 Edition From the Headmaster St. Joseph’s School Prayer The Positivity of Reality Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the SJ Way Point #2 Immaculate Virgin and Foster-Father of Jesus Christ; obtain for me and all The St. Joseph’s Way embraces all of reality, believing that it comes the members of my family, a pure, from God and therefore reveals signs of his presence. humble, and charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the Divine Will. Be my guide and model throughout Catholic Schools Week Greetings from all of us at St. Joseph’s! life that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary. One of the distinguishing marks of a Catholic school is how we Help us, Saint Joseph, in our earthly understand and engage with reality. For us, reality is more than what strife, to fulfill our responsibilities and meets the eye, because God is the architect and craftsman of all that ever to lead a pure and sinless life. exists. Creation is his gift and as such bears the signs of his wisdom, love, Amen. and presence. Some Christian writers go so far as to portray reality as enchanted because God continues to act within and for the good of his creation. (Think C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien in their respective Narnia and Lord of the Rings series.) This view of reality is very different from a Contents secular, materialistic approach that reduces all that is to simply the stuff of which it consists, which can therefore be manipulated at will as one From the Headmaster ....................... 1 sees fit. Things You Need To Know ................ 3 The Christian view of reality has all manner of implications for how From the Middle School Director ..... 6 Catholic schools approach education and life itself. For starters, we are intensely interested and curious about everything. Catholic school From the High School Director ......... 6 teachers believe academic work is more than a means to getting From the Athletic Department ......... 7 ahead in life. They look for ways to introduce students to the ultimate mysteries at the root of their academic disciplines in order to point out From the Business Office ................... 8 God’s creative and inscrutable handiwork. Recognizing that God’s gift From the College Counseling Office of creation demands our wise stewardship, we also care about what ............................................................. 8 happens to the environment and teach our students to use their talents From the Development Office ......... 9 and resources to leave the world better for those who come after them. Moreover, we believe and teach that there is no contradiction From the Fine Arts Department ........ 9 between faith, reason, and science, which is why Catholic universities From the Parents Guild.................... 10 have always been at the forefront of scientific research. One important overarching ramification of this view of reality is the conviction that reality is ultimately positive. We don’t mean this in a Pollyanna-ish, naive, unthinking, unrealistically optimistic sense that bad things don’t happen, for we all know that they most certainly do and
February 2022 News and Notes Page 2 that they can be both painful and often without a satisfactory explanation. Instead, without denying or downplaying the difficulties and sufferings that inevitably come, we affirm that God is a good and benevolent Father who knows what is best and will ultimately work all things out for our good (Romans 8:28). One’s belief in the positivity of reality is often put to the test through the bad things that happen to us and our loved ones. We are nearing two full years of living with and educating during COVID-19 and all the havoc that it has wreaked. We've also all experienced the challenges that come with illness, a sudden adverse diagnosis, seemingly unresolvable problems at work, and the deep suffering we experience at the hands of poor decisions made by loved ones. Recently, I attended the funeral Mass of a mother of three SJSC graduates who died far too young from cancer. How does this jive with the proposal that reality is positive? One of the scriptures read during the funeral Mass suggests an answer. I’ll end by sharing that scripture and by asking for prayers for Steven, Chrissy, and Michael Fowler and for their father, former SJCS trustee Michael Fowler, as they mourn the loss of their wife and mother, Veronica Fowler. “But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be not from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you… we too believe and therefore speak, knowing that the one who raised Jesus from the dead will raise us also with Jesus and place us with you in his presence. Everything indeed is for you, so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God. Therefore, we are not discouraged; rather although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:7-18) In whatever difficult situations or circumstances you may be experiencing in your family, may God grant you encouragement and faith to realize that everything that is happening is indeed somehow for your good and may it produce for you an eternal weight of glory. In closing, please join us in praying for the following members of the SJCS family: for Bryson Smith on the passing of his great grandfather; for Will Wolfe on the passing of his grandfather; for Michael ’08, Chrissy ’09 and Steven ’09 Fowler on the passing of their mother. Also, please join us in prayer for Father Duncan and Elizabeth Duncan’s new son, Peter Joseph, as he is in the NICU struggling with lung issues. With Love and Prayers, Keith F. Kiser Headmaster

February 2022 News and Notes Page 6 From the Middle School Director “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten we belong to each other.” Mother Teresa I spend a good amount of time reading and learning about young people. Much of my interest comes from the work I do, and some of it comes out of necessity regarding the needs of my own children. As parents, we often quip that a well-developed parenting manual is non-existent … and, if there were one, it would have so many revisions we surely wouldn’t be able to keep up. A topic of increasing investigation and discussion is the intensifying sense of loneliness that many of our young people are experiencing. Despite digital methods that more easily allow us to connect across time and space, our children report a higher level of loneliness than previous generations. And this was of concern even before the pandemic and the impact of isolation, quarantine, and online learning. While these observations are concerning, even disheartening, we gain incredible power when we acknowledge something for what it is. We then can decide if we want it to look differently, and we can commit to doing something about it. Our Catholic school has decided that a sense of belonging and connectedness is an integral part of our young people’s formation. It is essential to the St. Joseph’s Way. We officially celebrate Catholic Schools Week January 30 - February 5, 2022. My fondness for Catholic schools began when I started first grade, as our parish school, St. Casimir, didn’t have a kindergarten. To this day, I can remember the pride I felt with being part of that school community. Excellence was a given. There was no question about the quality and impact of our academic preparation. And we did what was expected of us - wearing uniforms, completing our work, following the rules - more out of a sense of commitment than a fear of punishment. Our dedication to the expectations was an outward gesture of our inner (albeit unrealized) belief that we were part of something greater … that we had a responsibility to the whole of us. The daily reminders and practices that directed our thoughts and awareness to Christ provided order and a strong sense of purpose. No matter what was happening outside those Catholic school walls, inside those walls I didn’t feel lonely. I had a place where I truly felt I belonged. While intellectual development is a rightful focus of our work at St. Joseph’s, we are uniquely and intentionally interested in matters of the heart and soul. The connection between what is now and what is possible is lived out inside this building every day in the meaningful connections that our students develop with their teachers and each other. It is my daily work and prayer that each of our young people experience St. Joseph’s as a place where loneliness disappears, and is replaced with the genuine belief that they have a place they truly belong. From the High School Director There’s a transition in the life of every institution that survives its infancy when it moves from being the “little engine that could” to a truly remarkable organization with staying power and influence beyond its own membership. I believe that St. Joseph’s has made that transition very well. By the observable metrics, our school is thriving. Our students are doing very well on objective tests and report great satisfaction with their choices after graduation. Our retention rate, always an issue for independent schools, is more than nine out of ten. That speaks not just to the quality of what we offer but to the genuine buy-in from our students and their families. Those markers of success are reassuring, but they don’t tell the whole story. Our mission is to transform the hearts and minds of our students into the likeness of Christ. Over the years, I’ve learned that fulfilling that mission isn’t really something that can be captured on a scorecard. When I think about the programmatic side of that mission, I think of the numerous Masses we have every week, the active retreat program we run, and the number of opportunities for students to reflect on the gospel. Those things are great, but even they don’t capture the totality of our mission. I think the St. Joseph’s Way comes closest to it in the fourth point, namely that we accompany students as they verify the Christian proposal we make every day.
February 2022 News and Notes Page 7 Accompaniment can be slow, hard work. And it’s messy. Accompaniment also means truly partnering with families to support students. Partners work together for a common goal, in our case the ultimate well-being of our students. They recognize that we all have strengths and weaknesses, and in fact what makes a partnership successful is often how well they work together to complement each other. In my experience, partnerships work best when we assume the best of each other, and keep the lines of communication open when we encounter the inevitable speed bumps that come with any sustained, important, and meaningful endeavor. Sustained, important, and meaningful…I certainly hope that describes the educational project here at St. Joseph’s. I’m sure none of us would have it any other way. The Booster Club also helped offset the cost of championship rings for Girls Soccer, Girls Volleyball, and Boys Swimming.

Tuition Recruitment Credit In an effort to recruit more families like yours to St. Joseph’s Catholic School, and reward our best customers to help us with this endeavor, the school offers a five-hundred-dollar ($500) Tuition Credit Program. Based on parent feedback, we have learned that “Word-of-Mouth” is our most effective advertising medium for attracting families. When a new family applies for admission, they have the opportunity to name the St. Joseph’s family on their application who recommended SJCS. After the new student(s) attends school for one quarter, the recruiting family receives a $500 credit on their next tuition bill, usually in November.
