Family Programs September - December 2021 Wilkerson Nature Preserve Register online at reclink.raleighnc.gov. Children must be accompanied by an adult for all programs. Please dress for the weather and outdoor fun! Note: programs often take place on trails that are inaccessible for strollers. Astronomy Nights (Ages 5+; children must be accompanied by an adult) What's up in space this spring? Each program begins with an indoor presentation and (weather permitting) moves outside after sunset to view the moon, stars, and more with the preserve's telescope. Fee: $2, advance registration required. Friday, October 8th 7:00 PM-8:30 PM Thursday, November 18th 5:00 PM-6:30 PM Friday, December 10th 5:00 PM-6:30 PM Fall Flowers and Flyers (TACO week) (All ages; children must be accompanied by an adult) Every fall brings thousands of flower to our fields- just in time for hummingbirds, and butterflies to prepare for migration. Join us for a hike and learn about the flowers of fall, admire their beauty, and learn how protecting them supports many of the animals around us. Free, no registration required Friday, September 24th 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM Nature Play Day (TACO week) (All ages; children must be accompanied by an adult) Children of all ages, as well as the young at heart, are welcome to join us for imaginative play in a natural setting. Dig for gemstones, make a fort out of natural materials, fly a kite, and more! We’ll provide the materials, you provide the play! Free, no registration required. Friday, September 24th 10:00 AM-1:00 PM Twilight Walk (TACO Week) (Ages 5+; children must be accompanied by an adult) Many animals are active around sunset or shortly after. Take a walk with a park naturalist to explore the woods and fields as the sun goes down. Look for deer, coyotes, and owls. This program is designed for families with young children, but all ages are welcome. Free, no registration required. Saturday, September 25th 6:30 PM-8:00 PM Fall Foliage Hike (Ages 5+; children must be accompanied by an adult) You don’t have to travel far to appreciate the colors of fall. Come see Wilkerson Nature Preserve in peak fall color and join a naturalist guide for a hike focused on our beautiful deciduous trees. Fee: $2, advance registration required. Saturday, November 20th 2:00 PM-3:30 PM Evergreens for Everyone (Ages 5+; children must be accompanied by an adult) As winter approaches, we can all appreciate the evergreens! Learn to identify our native evergreens, make your own evergreen field guide, and take a short hike through the park to visit our evergreens. Fee: $2, advance registration required. Preschool Programs September—December 2021 Wilkerson Nature Preserve Programs are designed for children ages 3-6 years with an accompanying adult (no fee for adult). Preregistration is required — either call the park office or go online to reclink.raleighnc.gov. Some programs take place on trails that are not accessible by strollers. Please dress for the weather and outdoor fun! Beaver Pond (TACO week) (3-6 years) Discover how beavers live, eat, and play in their watery world! Weather permitting , we will search for beaver signs in and around the preserve’s pond. Story and craft are included, adults must accompany their children. No course fee. Advance registration not required. Activity code: AWNPTACOBEAVERPOND Wednesday, September 29th 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM Going Batty! (3-6 years) Learn all about bats — how they fly and catch their food, where they live, and what they will do in the winter. Play some batty games and make a bat toy to take home! This program is designed for a parent or other adult to attend with their preschooler. There is no charge for adults. Course Fee: $3 Wednesday, October 13th 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM Bird Buddies (3-6 years) The winter birds are arriving at the nature preserve and they need some buddies! Make paper tube binoculars and take a walk to spy on our bird buddies in the forest and field. This program is designed for a parent or other adult to attend with their preschooler. There is no charge for adults. Youth Programs September - December 2021 Wilkerson Nature Preserve Please dress for the weather and outdoor fun! Parents are welcome to stay and observe the program, but are not required to accompany their children. Preregistration required. Register online at reclink.raleighnc.gov or call the preserve office for assistance. Autumnal Equinox: Equinox Astronomy (Ages 8-13) Why do we have seasons? Why do we say the falls days are “getting shorter”? How do animals know when to migrate? In this investigation, we will construct models to understand how the source of the seasons is literally “out of this world”. Fee: $4 Tuesday, September 22nd 3:00 PM-4:30 PM Tracks and Skulls (Ages 8-12) Learn to identify the tracks and skulls of common animals that live in or near the preserve. Make a plaster cast of a track to take home. Weather permitting, we will take a hike to look for tracks and ani- mal bones! Fee: $4 Friday, October 22nd 3:00 PM-4:30 PM Deer Tracking (Ages 8-13) It’s the peak of the rutting season and the deer are very active in the woods. Let’s track some deer and find their hiding places. Learn how to think like a whitetail. Dress for the weather and outdoor ad- venture. Advance registration is required for this program.
