Living on campus can be an exciting and rewarding experience. As a citizen of our residential community, you have the convenience of living close to classes, the library, laundry facilities, tutors, computer labs, and the Student Health Center. WELCOME Moving into a residence hall can be unpredictable. To make the TO THEE transition easier, the Department of Housing and Residence Life has created this guide to help answer your questions before you pack your bags. The Fall 2020 Move-In Guide details move-in days, parking services, directions, and other important information. Department of Housing and residence life | 4
Immunization records All students are required to have up-to-date immunizations in order to move into the residence halls. If you have questions about immunizations, please contact the Student Health Center at 601.979.2260. 5| fall 2021 move-in guide
BEFORE YOU ARRIVE TO CAMPUS
Make sure that your registration is complete 1. All students must be registered for twelve (12) or more credit hours. 2. All tuition and housing charges must be paid prior to moving in. Meet your roommates before Move-in Day To find your roommate(s) information: 1. Log into your THD Self-Service Portal. 2. Scroll down to “Assignments.” 3. You will see a list of the occupants of your room, suite, or apartment. • If there is no occupant listed, it means there is no roommate currently. • Please note that limited information may be available if your roommate has set their profile to “Private.” Moving and Packing Tips Pack Ahead of Time Pack up things you know you won’t need during the summer. Put those winter coats, extra towels, bed sheets, and school supplies in storage bins/moving boxes as soon as possible. It’ll save you time and stress later. Review Move-in Checklist Review the move-in checklist to make sure you have everything you need to set up your room. This will ensure that you won’t have to make multiple trips to the store. Open First Box or Overnight Bag Have a box or bag ready with things you may need right away – linens for your bed, change of clothes, personal care items, phone charger, etc. 7| fall 2020 move-in guide

Housing and Residential Life is establishing a carefully organized move-in process spread out over several days to follow public health and safety guidelines. In order to provide a socially-distanced and efficient move-in experience, please review the following updates: • Limited unloading assistance will be available. • We will have large rolling cardboard bins and hand trucks (dollies) available at each dorm to assist you should you wish to use them, or you may bring your own. Doing so will help ensure you have a quick and easy unloading process. MOVE-IN DAY Department of Housing and residence life | 14
In order to provide a socially-distanced and efficient move-in experience, each resident is assigned a specific day and time to move in. Specific floors may be further assigned to either morning or afternoon arrival times. When You Arrive 1. Please report to the Athletics & Assembly Center (AAC) to receive your health clearance from a JSU Health Center representative. 2. After receiving your health clearance, you will report to the JSU Housing & Residence Life representative to receive your housing clearance. 3. Once you have received both your health and housing clearances, you may report to your assigned residence hall to move in. - If you do not receive your housing clearance, you must report to the One Stop Shop located in the JSU Student Center Ballroom to complete your registration. When You Arrive to your assignED residence hall 1. When checking in to your residence hall, unload your belongings directly onto the sidewalk area. 2. Parking in front of the halls is limited; stay with your belongings while someone else moves the vehicle to the lot reserved for move-in. 3. Report to the check-in area for your residence-hall assignment, which will be designated by signage. 4. You will be provided with a Room Condition Report to complete, an inventory of your new room’s condition, and your room key or access card. EARLY MOVE-IN It is not possible to move in earlier than stated without prior approval. Campus maps and driving directions to each residence hall can be found online. Students who move-in early and DO NOT APPLY for an Early Arrival will be fined and charged for each day they arrive early, factoring in their scheduled arrival day and time. LATE MOVE-IN If you intend to arrive later than the designated move-in dates, you must notify the Department of Housing and Residence Life. Email your name, J-number, and intended arrival date to housinginfo@jsums.edu before the semester begins. Failure to do so will place you in no-show status and jeopardize your room assignment. 15 | fall 2021 move-in guide
MOVE-IN GUIDELINES Department of Housing and residence life | 16
Students must provide proof of full vaccination (Moderna/Pfizer: Two Shots, Johnson & Johnson: One Shot) or obtain proof of a negative Covid-19 test result dated at least 3 days before arrival to campus to be permitted to move into the residence halls. Students will be required to provide a physical copy of the test results upon arrival to campus. All proof of vaccination and/ or negative test results must be uploaded at least 72 hours prior to arrival by using the following link: https://web-tools.one.jsums.edu/COVID_ Clearnce. Students who do not provide this document will not be allowed to move into the residence halls. The JSU Student Health Center will review the document for a negative result, at which time the student will receive clearance from the Health Center Staff. Resident assistants and limited volunteers will provide directions and assistance while you move into housing and distribute room keys and important documents. We recommend bringing limited family or friends to assist you. All individuals will be required to wear masks. GUESTS ON MOVE-IN DAY Each student will be allowed ONLY two individuals to assist them with moving in. Those two individuals must provide proof of full vaccination (Moderna/Pfizer: Two Shots, Johnson & Johnson: One Shot) or show proof of a negative COVID-19 test result dated at least 3 days before their student’s move-in date. Proof of ID must be submitted with the test results upon arrival to campus. All guests will receive a health clearance pass to proceed on campus. If a guest cannot provide a negative test result, they will not be allowed in the residence halls. Students Who Test Positive After Arriving On Campus Students whose permanent address is within five hours of campus are advised to quarantine at home. In extenuating circumstances, these students are allowed to quarantine on campus. 17 | fall 2021 move-in guide

Room Furnishings You will be provided with a bed frame, mattress, dresser, desk, chair, and a closet or wardrobe. All windows have shades, curtains, or blinds. Traditional and suite-style residence hall units are not equipped with cooking facilities. They have common-area kitchenettes with sinks and microwaves or stoves. Bed Dimensions JSU has twin-size beds installed in its residence halls. Select rooms have full-size beds. Consult your family’s homeowners or renter’s insurance policy to understand the coverage you might have as a resident of university housing. If you do not have coverage, consider purchasing a renter’s insurance policy to protect your personal property. University insurance covers only university property. Jackson State University does not insure for damage or loss to your personal property. For information about private insurance providers, visit jsums.edu/housing, and click “Property Insurance.” NSSI: College Student Property Insurance National Student Services, Inc. offers a personal property insurance program exclusively designed for college students. Make sure your valuable electronic devices and other personal property are protected. Students can save hundreds of dollars on smartphones, tablets, and laptop repairs. Don’t let your expensive devices go unprotected this semester. Accidentally drop your cell phone and crack the screen? COVERED! Accidentally spill coffee on your laptop? COVERED! DECORATING YOUR ROOM Department of Housing and residence life | 24
Coordinate with your roommate(s) to decorate your room to reflect your energy and style. Many rooms have bulletin boards or tack strips; use mounting putty (instead of nails or tacks) to hang things on the walls. (Note: You are not permitted to paint, install carpeting (area rugs are allowed), hang wallpaper, apply contact paper or decals, use command strips, hang items from ceiling pipes or fire-safety equipment, or alter university furniture in any way.) Things You Might Want To Bring • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) such as face masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer • Cable lock for a laptop • Broom/dustpan, Swiffer mop, and plunger • Vacuum cleaner • Headphones • Fan • Green painters tape to hang posters or other decorations • Push pins or thumbtacks • Health insurance card • Personal appliances with automatic shutoff features, such as an iron, coffee maker or an air fryer • Personal toiletries • Pictures and posters • Power strip • Sheets, pillows, blankets, mattress cover • Small tool kit • TV • USB printer cable if you plan to bring a printer • Wastebasket You may only bring refrigerators that are less than 3.6 cubic feet and are ENERGY STAR–rated. Microwaves must be less than 1000 watts.
