TEACH OUTSIDE, EXPECT ADVENTURE!!! 2019 TOEA Conference Schedule Check in to get cabin assignment and other info! Forget/lose something? Check at Lost and Found in Dining Hall. (some free toiletries provided) Sign up in your cabin for clean-up duties. Cabins MUST be cleaned WELL before you depart on Sunday. Follow instructions in cabins! Please take pictures and share on TOEA’s Facebook page or send to sandy.kimbrough@tamuc.edu or another board member. You can also post on Instagram and tag @txoutdooreducationassociation Our chef for all meals and snacks: Olive Branch Catering (Please DO NOT ENTER kitchen.) Please complete feedback forms at each session! Thanks!!! Lifeguard hours and locations will be posted on-site! Do you need CPE credits for TEA? Complete the form at the end of this packet; TEA will accept the form from you because TOEA is a recognized provider! H. E. Butt Family Foundation Camp does not allow smoking or alcohol on the premises. Thank you for respecting their guidelines. SOME sessions will have a limit. You will be able to sign up on-site for those sessions only (designated by *XX).
Friday, 9/27 Friday, September 27 2:30-4:45 PM Presentation: Kayaking and Stand up Paddleboard *45 ----- Erik Silvius, Pete Silvius, Myles Amador, Tasha McKinney, Barrett Hardy, Meagan Melocik Description: Participants will receive basic paddling instruction for both Stand Up Paddle boarding and kayaking. All equipment provided. Location: meet at SH circle drive (Participants may be able to join while session is happening.) 2:30-4:45 PM Presentation: TPWD Basic Fly Fishing *14 (or BYO equipment)----- Keira Quam Description: This workshop is for those interested in learning fly fishing skills. Location: Singing Hills waterfront 2:30-4:45 PM Presentation: Native American Flutes *15----- Leo Lopez Description: Learn the history and types of the Native American flute. Each participant will make a beginner native flute. Except for a sander no power tools will be used. Location: Cabin 1 Porch ****This presentation is repeated Saturday 9:30am. 3:45-4:45 PM Presentation: It’s a Treasure Hunt, It’s a Scavenger Hunt, No it’s GEOCACHING!----- Sarah Barnard Description: Let’s explore together! This is an introductory session for those interested in learning about geocaching. You’ll learn how to get started, the tools of the trade, and the lingo used. Location: Dining Hall
Friday, 9/27 3:45-4:45 PM Presentation: Comet Ball Activities, Kan Jam, and Kubb/Viking Chess----- Janice Cuccia, Sandy Kimbrough, and Dean Culpepper Description: Comet Ball uses hula hoops, milk crates, tennis balls and knee socks make for adventure and fun games. Kubb, sometimes called "Viking Chess," is an outdoor game often described as a combination of bowling and horseshoes. Kan Jam is frisbee in a barrel. Working in teams of two, just like horseshoes/cornhole/etc, the team works together to score 21 points by hitting the frisbee into the side of, into the top of, or through the slot of the “can.” Location: Singing Hills Field 5:00-6:00 PM Presentation: TOEA Olympics ----- Teresa Machu Description: Join us for a variety of curtain raising activities to connect with other TOEA members. Location: Singing Hills Field 6:15-7:15 DINNER at the Dining Hall, announcements at 7:00 PM. 7:30-8:30 PM Presentation: Knotting Matters----- Tere Ramirez Description: During this session, the participant will learn how to select a rope for the intended application, rope nomenclature, steps in tying a knot, the purpose of the knot and the 5 most important knots for beginners. A rope for practicing the knot tying during the session and handouts will be provided. Location: Dining Hall Back Porch
Friday, 9/27 7:30-8:30 PM Presentation: First Aid in the Wilderness: Are you Prepared? ----- Henry Ross Description: This presentation will provide knowledge needed to assemble a good wilderness first aid kit and review the care for injuries we are likely to encounter. Location: Dining Hall 8:45-10:15 PM Presentation: Nature at Night ----- Kelsey Spearing and Megan Oberdoerster Description: Learn about nature at night! We will listen to nocturnal animals, play with unexpected sources of light, and discover how human senses adapt in the dark. Saturday, 9/28 Saturday, September 28 7:00-8:00 AM BREAKFAST at the Dining Hall, announcements at 7:45 AM. 8:15-10:30 AM Presentation: Tenkara Fly Fishing *12----- Keira Quam Description: Learn about and try fly fishing using a Japanese style Tenkara rod. (No fishing license needed for this session.) Location: Singing Hills waterfront 8:15-10:30 AM Presentation: Land Navigation with a Compass ----- Tere Ramirez Description: Participants will learn compass nomenclature, how to handle the compass, and how set and walk a bearing. Three activities will be provided to allow participants to apply knowledge and skills gained during the session. Compasses and handouts will be provided. Location: Singing Hills Field 8:15-9:15 AM Presentation: Wake Up with Hatha Yoga ----- Graeme Cox Description: Start your day with gentle Hatha yoga which builds strength and flexibility. The “bread” in your Yoga sandwich is stretching on one side and relaxation on the other. Location: Dining Hall Back Porch

The Ranger Cadet Program works to increase equity in outdoor careers & empower cadets to be leaders. Location: Pavilion 8:15-9:15 AM Presentation: Air Rifle-----*10 Steve Hall Description: Steve Hall (TPWD) will introduce participants to air rifle, including a chance to shoot. Location: Shooting Range (across river) ****This presentation is repeated at 9:30 and 10:45. 9:30-11:45 AM Presentation: Cooking up a (Thunder)Storm ----- Bridget Bradshaw and Kat Bell Description: Come learn how thunderstorms form, become a water molecule that builds a thunderhead, and brainstorm ways to make weather pop in the classroom! Location: Dining Hall, then Singing Hills Field 9:30-11:45 AM Presentation: Beginning Mountain Biking 101 *20----- Bob Sanderson, Pete Silvius, and Erik Silvius Description: This session will introduce Mountain Biking to new riders and as a refresher course to others. Bikes will be provided, or bring your own. Participants will wear helmets (foundation’s or yours)! Bring water! Foundation bikes should have bottle holders on them. Location: meet at SH circle drive

Location: Pavilion 10:45-11:45 AM Presentation: Air Rifle-----*10 Steve Hall Description: Steve Hall (TPWD) will introduce participants to air rifle, including a chance to shoot. Saturday, 9/28 10:45-11:45 AM Presentation: Swimming----- Patty Donaldson Description: Participants will learn safety skills such as floating on stomach as well as back, using safety equipment, rotary breathing with front crawl, resting strokes such as elementary back stroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke, and how to dive to a depth while holding breath. Location: Singing Hills waterfront 10:45-11:45 AM Presentation: Creating Inclusive Outdoor Spaces----- Melissa Hand Description: Participants will learn about creating and adapting garden spaces for people of all abilities. Discover programs that can be taught in your outdoor space. Location: Pavilion 12:00-1:00 PM LUNCH at the Dining Hall, announcements at 12:45 PM. 1:15-3:30 PM Presentation: The Art of Coyote Mentoring----- Turtle Scott, Lindsay Robbins Description: Enter the mysterious realm of the Coyote as we explore hands on techniques to build lifelong nature connection and inspire critical thinking from program participants in any nature based learning forum. Location: Pavilion, then Singing Hills Field 1:15-3:30 PM Presentation: Intermediate Mountain Biking-----*20 Bob Sanderson, Pete Silvius, Erik Silvius Description: This session will build on basic mountain biking skills to experienced riders. Saturday, 9/28 1:15-2:15 PM Presentation: 9 Square in the Air ----- Teresa Machu and Melissa Munsell Description: 9 Square in the Air is an extremely popular game in our school district. Our goal is to present variations of the game involving skill introduction at the elementary level to more advanced variations at the secondary level. Location: Singing Hills Field 1:15-2:15 PM Presentation: Launches ----- Michelle Darnell Description: Students will create a giant sling shot to launch objects. The objects will be weighted differently to create different results. Each student will make a hypothesis, manipulate the launch and formulate a conclusion. Location: Play Field Across River 2:30-3:30 PM Presentation: Tin Can Cooking ----- Chris Lopez Description: Use tin cans and cardboard boxes to learn to cook. Location: Concrete slab at Play Field across river 2:30-3:30 PM Presentation: Build an Animal Hide ----- Amy Rivers Description: Using poster board and available materials, design and build an animal observation hide to create an animal inventory and graph the results. Location: Dining Hall
Saturday, 9/28 2:30-3:30 PM Presentation: Promoting outdoor education among college students at Sul Ross State University ----- Chris Herrera Description: From river rafting to desert survival training, SRSU Recreation studies provide a new platform for outdoor education in the Big Bend region of Texas. Location: Pavilion 3:45-4:45 PM Presentation: Bee Friendly ----- Brian Robert Description: Brief discussion of different native Texas plants that are good for pollinators followed by making seed balls to help re-establish native Texas pollinator plants. Location: Pavilion 3:45-4:45 PM Presentation: Group Activities, Initiatives, and Challenges----- Melissa Munsell & Teresa Machu Description: Learn about and participate in various group activities, initiatives, and challenges suitable for classes or teams that can be done indoors or outdoors. Location: Singing Hills Field 3:45-4:45 PM Presentation: Raising Monarch Butterflies ----- Lisa Wise Description: Come learn how to raise Monarch butterflies, and tips on how to raise a beautiful butterfly garden. Saturday, 9/28 3:45-4:45 PM Presentation: Welder Wildlife Foundation's K-6th Classroom Lessons----- Angie Arredondo and Sarah Melendez Description: Join us in learning how to use a dichotomous key and proper plant identification, learn about limiting factors and the effects of change in habitat, and get a demo in the trapping technique, mist-netting, biologist use for avian research. Hard copies will be provided to take back to the classroom! Location: Dining Hall 5:00-6:00 PM FREE TIME 5:00-6:00 PM Presentation: Let’s Bocce ----- Ytszel and Mary Lou Trinidad Description: Not so new recreational sport, but may have its advantages to being strategic, often compared to Shuffleboard or Curling.
