What is expected of a returning Peer Educator? The returning Peer Educator is uniquely qualified to serve as a mentor to new members of the Peer Educator staff because of their experience in the position. They influence the staff dynamic in their specific team and the staff as a whole. The Residence Life and Housing Department expects the returning Peer Educators to embrace their role as leaders on staff and allow the first-year staff to experience their position. The Peer Educator position is a challenging one, both in the daily work responsibilities and the opportunities for individual growth and development. Returning Peer Educators have perspective to both challenge and support their peers while allowing each individual on the staff team to experience the position through their own lens. In addition to the mentorship role of the returning Peer Educator position, returning Peer Educators are expected to fulfill all requirements of the Peer Educator position as it pertains to their assigned role. For specific details on the Peer Educator position, please see the position description. The Residence Life & Housing Department encourages all qualified candidates to apply. The invitation to apply is inclusive and not limited by ethnicity, age, gender, religious preference, sexual orientation, or physical ability. How are returning Peer Educators selected? Returning Peer Educator candidates go through a selection process focusing on the potential of each candidate to successfully educate residents and positively impact a staff team. This potential is brought to light through a variety of tasks the candidates must complete. These include the application, resume, recommendation forms, and the returning Peer Educator presentation. The application process is designed to clearly highlight each applicant’s skill set and potential within the position. This application information packet includes the Peer Educator position description, an outline and timeline of the selection process, the 2020-2021 returning Peer Educator application, and the returning Peer Educator recommendation form. Each applicant will be asked to obtain two recommendations. These recommendations need to be obtained from a current supervisor and a current Peer Educator on your staff. You are responsible for asking your supervisor and Peer Educator staff member to complete the recommendation form for you. The person completing the recommendation form will be responsible for submitting it through Mustangs Link. Each applicant will be asked to make a fifteen minute presentation. The presentation will be followed by ten minutes of questions from the panel. The returning Peer Educator presentation is a vital part of the returning Peer Educator selection process that allows our staff to reflect on their experience and growth as a Peer Educator. This also allows our professional staff to meet each candidate and determine who will be the best fit for the position. This process ensures the best possible candidates are selected by having applicants participate in a consistent and equal selection process. Due to the nature of the returning Peer Educator selection process, a presentation must be scheduled during the available time slots on March 2-6, 2020.
What needs to be in the presentation? Returning Peer Educator candidates are asked to create an interactive 15-minute presentation that highlights their year(s) as a Peer Educator. Minimally, the following must be included in the presentation: Goals for the Peer Educator position o Recognizing this was a pilot year for the Peer Educator program, what do you think should be done differently next year? How can you effect that change? o What would you like to do that you didn’t get the chance to do? o What do you want to do again? Personal Reflection o How have you grown as a person over the past year? o How would you like to grow as a person? o What sets you apart from the other candidates? Mentorship for first year Peer Educator staff o How do you define a mentor? o As a returning peer educator, how do you fit that definition? o What goals do you have for working with the first year Peer Educator staff? Peer Educator Onboarding Process If selected to be a returning Peer Educator, you will be expected to participate in an Onboarding Process. “Onboarding” is a term used to describe a formal orientation or introduction to a job. For Residence Life & Housing, this process is designed to help build the foundation for the Peer Educator position and will provide an introduction to important concepts such as community building, safety and security, and confrontation/mediation while also providing opportunities to begin creating important team connections. Participants are required to participate in a series of workshops that focus on leadership and community development in order to better understand the Peer Educator position. The three workshops will be held from 7 p.m.—8:30 p.m. on March 29, April 5, and April 19 in the Legacy Multipurpose Room.
