Message from the Grandmaster Leadership Blessing for the New Year I wish you more time in your days, not just for getting more done, though that may be good. But for thinking and musing, For listening to your own heartbeat, and the heartbeats all around you. For getting up above the clouds, and seeing beyond the horizon.” “I wish you courage to act or not, To make tough decisions when necessary and empathy, to understand the impact of those decisions on you and all you touch. Then Resilience to keep moving forward.” “I wish you clarity of vision and creative thinking, to see interconnections that could bring you opportunity, and those that point toward possible solutions, not just for symptoms, but for underlying problems. To see ways you can rather than ways you can’t.” “I wish you the skill and will to be present. To feel you feet on the floor, in this moment, in this place. To see the person or people before you. To look into their eyes, to hear what they say, and understand, or ask questions, to really listen without having to speak.” “I wish you comaraderie and support, someone to listen, someone to lean on, someone to think with. For leading, both the role and the act, at its heart a lonely business, because you take us to places we haven’t seen before, and it’s always a risk.” “I wish you nights of restful sleep and vacations from technology. Slower days to set aside the heavy responsibilities of demanding more from yourself than even others demand.” “I wish you a team of people to work with that shares a common goal, that can laugh and argue together, that appreciates their differences. And in the end, gets things done with you and without you.” “I wish that you live your year, your days at work, and your days at home, in ways that nourish you, and make a difference for others, days you look back on with few regrets.” Thank you Nancy Hardaway. “I wish you love, laughter, good health, and success throughout 2017.” Tang Soo! Revisions of the rulebook http://www.arteca.rocks/judging-certification have occurred throughout the years with the latest version in 2016. In 2006, Grandmaster Shin saw the need to standardize judging at WTSDA Championships and established the Judging Certification Committee. The committee established three levels of judges and the requirements for each level. Since this time, training materials have been developed to assist Regional Judging Coordinators. To aid in the training of individuals, a website has been created to support the training of future judges, scorekeepers and timekeepers as well as a refresher for those already certified. The new website serves as a valuable resource to any WTSDA member. Regional Updates Region 8 Adult Dan Clinic O ver 300 Black Belts and Black Belt candidates descended onto the campus at Elizabethtown University, Elizabethtown, PA on June 16-18, 2017 for the Region 8 annual Black Belt Clinic. Region 8 held the first such clinic over 30 years ago. This year was another fine example, and a great success. Master Mujahid Khan, Senior International Master and Region 11 Director, appeared as a special guest instructor at this years’ clinic, sharing his expertise with the fortunate Masters and Black Belts attending. Being one of the very best technicians in the Association, Master Khan demonstrated advanced skill sets at his sessions, adding to the excitement of the gathering. We enjoyed pretty good weather, so the group took advantage of the open fields and conducted most of the sessions outside. Taking benefit of the opportunity, I spent time visiting different sessions. I’m happy to say, I proudly observed the high quality our instructors put forth along with their enthusiastic presentations. Many in the different groups were held spellbound as they gratefully absorbed each lesson. Sessions were held in Hyung, self-defense, dynamic kicking drills, Yoga and Hapkido to name a few. There was also weapons training to choose from to include the bong, the dagger, and of course the sword. A judging clinic was also conducted by Master Rich Arteca. Adding to the enjoyment of the clinic the attendees had the freedom to pick and choose from the many skills offered. It is always interesting observing the new candidates attending their first camp. Most come to the event with more than a little apprehension, but that seems to disappear after the first day. You can hear comments like, “I didn’t expect everyone to be so positive and friendly. I’m so glad I came.” We were treated to four outstanding lecturers, two on Friday evening and two on Saturday evening. Saturday’s lectures ended with the Chil Dans sharing stories of Grandmaster Shin. The group was also entertained with the antics of Master Mimidis and our Regional Director Master Fattori who were busy the whole time making sure that the clinic went off without a hitch while keeping a good humor in the air. On the last day of the clinic, promotions were handed out to the persons who had done well at the Spring Black Belt test. I have often said that one of the things I most enjoy in my martial arts life is having the honor of tying on new Black Belts, and adding on the white stripes for higher Dan ranking. It’s such a privilege to share in their joy in reaching these lofty goals. All-in-all the clinic was a great success, due to hard work of the many behind the scenes workers and of course also due to the efforts of Master Mimidis and of Master Fattori.
