WINE REGIONS R eaping the benefits of a maritime climate created due to the proximity to Gulf St Vincent to the west, Lake Alexandrina to the east and the Southern Ocean, the Fleurieu is home to no less than four recognised wine regions – Currency Creek, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Southern Fleurieu – with vineyards now also springing up around Kuitpo. While all these regions enjoy a Mediterranean climate, it is the influence of the various soil types that dictate the individual flavour. Those just beginning their wine journey will enjoy sampling the local drop, perhaps chatting to the winemaker themselves, and fully immersing themselves in the experience. Joining a hosted tour is a great way to make a start – even if you think you know your wines. Try a new label – or variety – you don’t know and you may well come away with a new favourite! Penny’s Hill, McLaren Vale DINING W ith access to the best ingredients plucked from a pristine environment, it’s no wonder Fleurieu Peninsula boasts some of Australia’s best regional dining. You’d expect nothing less from a landscape boasting four acclaimed wine regions and a Mediterranean climate, all surrounded by water on three sides. Wine is by no means enjoyed in isolation; food is given just as much priority with ingredients proudly sourced locally. Fleurieu farmers and fishermen, vignerons, chefs, brewers, distillers and shopkeepers are intent on presenting the best food and drinks possible, whether they’re serving elegant modern restaurant cuisine, honest bistro meals or contemporary café and bakery snacks – not to mention the locally roasted coffee. Visitors are welcome to join the locals lucky enough to call the Fleurieu home in enjoying all it has to offer from freshly caught fish (and the perfect chip) on the beach to long lazy lunches at a cellar door surrounded by vineyards. The local pub is always a great place to start a culinary journey, and everyone benefits from the friendly rivalry to be the best bakery in town. The following pages feature a wide range of opportunities to experience what is on offer or you can turn to page 14 to find cellar door dining alternatives. All of these are conveniently listed in the index on page 64. Gather at Coriole Vineyards, McLaren Vale 24 DINING DINING 25
