Welcome Guildford Borough Council manages and cares for a portfolio of heritage buildings of significant and varying historic interest, protected by listed status within conservation areas. rd Guildford House - 155 High Street, Guildford GU1 3AJ Guildfo House Guildford House is a fascinating 17th century Grade 1 Listed town house located on the High Street. It houses Guildford House Gallery: a changing exhibition space offering a varied programme of art and craft shows, workshops and talks; a craft gift shop; Tourist Information Centre and café, all within a character historic setting. Opening times: Monday to Saturday: 9.30am to 4.45pm, Sun: 11am to 4pm (May - Sept). Free entry The Brew House: Located in the courtyard of Guildford House, shows exhibitions of emerging artists. rd Guildford Museum - Castle Arch, Quarry Street, Guildford GU1 3SX Guildfo m Museu Set in a series of historic buildings just a couple of minutes walk from Guildford High Street, the Museum is full of charm and interest. Step into the world of prehistoric man, the Romans and Saxons, monks and friars, Lewis Carroll and the Victorians. Opening times: Monday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm (last admission 4.45pm). Free entry rd Guildford Castle - Castle Street, Guildford GU1 3SX Guildfo Castle Visit Guildford Castle and head to the top of the Great Tower for a 360 degree panoramic view of Guildford and the beautiful surrounding countryside. Inside you’ll find a model of the original castle circa 1300, and interpretation panels tracing its history to the present day. Opening times: April to Sept: 10am to 5pm daily (last admission 4.30pm). The Guildhall - High Street, Guildford GU1 3AA The ll Guildha The Guildhall is a 16th/17th century building of great historic interest. Formerly a courtroom and council chamber, the ground floor is of Tudor origin. The classical front of the building is dominated by a magnificent bracket clock made in 1683. Opening times: For information on tours or visiting please contact heritage services. al Medieval Undercroft - 72 High St, Guildford GU1 3HE Mediev ft ro Underc The medieval Undercroft is one of the finest examples in the country. Dating from the end of the 13th century, this stone vaulted semi-basement is thought to have been a merchant’s shop, selling wine or expensive cloths or silk. Opening times: May to September only: Wednesdays, 2pm to 4pm, Saturdays, 12pm to 4pm. Free entry Wanborough Barn - Westwood Lane, Wanborough GU3 2JR rough Wanbo Barn Wanborough Barn is one of the most important medieval barns in England. Dating from 1388, it was built by the Cisterian monks of Waverley Abbey. Exhibitions Guildford Museum - temporary closure for planned essential maintenance During summer 2019 Guildford Museum will temporarily close for planned maintenance. This essential work is part of the Council’s investment in the museum’s future. Events, including Coffee Time Talks, Saturday Family Fun Mornings and Finds Identification Days, will take place in Guildford House. Look out for information and updates on our website at www.guildford.gov.uk. Our History Our Identity Hidden places, historical artefacts and untold stories of Guildford Borough. Discover the rich and varied history of villages around Guildford. The display includes these tales and stories from Wanborough, Clandon, Tongham and Normandy. Exhibitions Voices of Freiburg Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the twinning of Guildford and Freiburg. An exhibition of fascinating works by five working Freiburg artists: paintings, sculptures, installations. It includes works from the project “Voices of the World, Voices of Freiburg” by artists, Maria Cristina Tangorra and Annemarie Matzakow. Wild Surrey Surrey Wildlife Trust presents an exhibition of entries from the Wild Surrey Art & Photography Competition. To mark its 60th anniversary, Surrey Wildlife Trust is celebrating our county’s diverse wildlife with a special competition https://www.surreywildlifetrust.org/wildsurrey and exhibition highlighting nature- inspired artwork and photography from the residents of Surrey. Exhibitions The Maritime Art Group An exhibition by The Maritime Art Group: twelve artists Ken Head Ian Russell featuring paintings of the coast, ships and the sea. The group are enthusiastically “plein-air”. People and Places People and places as portrayed in the art work and objects in Guildford Borough Council’s museum and gallery collections. The imagery on the objects in our collections often shows a person or place. Exhibitions George Abbot’s Gift to Guildford Abbots Hospital image courtesy of Abbot’s Hospital On the 400th anniversary of the founding of Abbot’s Hospital on the High Street, this exhibition looks at George Abbot the man and the wonderful Alms House he gave to Guildford which is still a home for town residents today. It will show some of Abbot’s Hospital’s treasures not usually displayed to the public and trace the history of life as a resident. Out and About Sitting Down for Our Rights If you missed the Guildford Museum exhibition last year marking the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Guildford School of Art sit-in there are two chances to see it again. The sit-in was the longest ever staged by students in the UK and was instrumental in students gaining a say in their education.
