Dear Volunteer, You Make a Difference! First Class Volunteer Written By: Carrie Bittinger with Delta. Together, they have two children, Sarah and Trey. Sarah lives in Birmingham, and Trey lives in Peachtree City. When Covid hit and travel came to a screeching halt, Beverly knew that things were definitely going to change for her. “I knew I was going to be furloughed from flying due to Covid. I had already determined I would be intentional with my furlough time. We had just moved my mother-in-law, Sonia, here from New Jersey. We came in to get her membership and get acquainted with Fayette Senior Services so she could get involved in her new community. After experiencing and seeing the front desk volunteers at work, I knew that would be a good serving opportunity to pursue during my furlough.” Beverly was a perfect fit. From Our Kitchen To Yours New England Baked Beans Enjoy this delicious recipe to try at home from the kitchen of the Fayette Senior Services’ family! Ingredients • Salt • 1 lb (2 1/2 cups) dried navy beans, rinsed • 6 oz salt pork, rinsed and cut in 3 pieces • 1 onion, halved • 1/2 cup molasses • 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 2 teaspoons dry mustard • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 1 bay leaf Directions • Dissolve 1 1/2 tablespoons salt in 2 quarts cold water in a large container. Add beans and let soak at room temperature for at least 8 hours and up to 24 hours. Drain and rinse well. • Heat oven to 300 degrees. • Combine beans, salt pork, onion, molasses, sugar, soy sauce, mustard, pepper, bay leaf, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 4 cups water in large dutch oven. Note: liquid should cover beans at least 1/2 inch. Add more water if necessary. • Bring to a boil over high heat. Cover pot, transfer to oven, and cook until beans are softened, about 2 hours. Note: Stir beans after 1 hour and add liquid to just cover beans if necessary. • Remove lid and continue to cook until beans are fully tender and browned - about 1 hour longer. • Remove pot from oven, cover and let stand for 5 minutes. Stir beans and remove onion and bay leaf. • Let beans stand uncovered for 10-15 minutes until Photo by jeffreyw via flickr thickened slightly. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Rules, Regulations & Cancellation Policies Register early! Many of our classes are extremely popular and fill up quickly! All classes have a class-size limit that varies with each class. All classes – free or fee-based – require registration unless otherwise noted. Any applicable fees must be paid at the time of registration, or you are not considered registered for the class. REGISTRATION: Please stop by the Fayetteville or Peachtree City location or call the Center receptionist to register for classes. All fees are payable in advance – cash, check, or credit card. TRIPS: Trips are for FSS members only. Payments must be made at the time of reservations. Payments of cash or checks are strongly encouraged. Reservations for mailed-in checks will not be made until the check has been received by Fayette Senior Services. For any questions, please contact Morgan Lanier at 770-461-0813. See trip schedules for refund policy. CANCELLATIONS: Fayette Senior Services reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient registration or at the instructor’s request. If cancellation is necessary, anyone already registered will be notified and receive a full credit to their account. Please note that some classes have specific registration deadlines. WAITING LIST: All classes, activities, trips, and special events are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If a class or activity is full, you may be placed on a waiting list. REFUNDS: Refunds will be issued if registration is cancelled by the participant up to 5 working days prior to the start date. Any event costs incurred will be deducted from the requested refund in addition to a 10% administration fee. No refunds awarded after that deadline. Refunds will be issued in the form of an FSS credit towards future program registration or membership dues.
