East Area Renovation Project The facility is old thus causing reliability issues and operational restrictions. The primary beam line is generating high radiations, due to the nature of its usage and the lack of ventilation. The buildings achieved in the 60’s are not insulated and contain hazardous material. Power is currently supplied to the magnets on a continuous basis, with only 7% of it actually being used during beam time. Power converters to the new magnets will be on a cyclical basis, with an energy recovery stage between each cycle. The energy returned by the magnets during their de-magnetisation will be stored in capacitor banks connected to the new power converters and immediately reused during the next cycle to re-magnetise the magnets. From 11 GWh/year to 10 MJ of energy storage factory tested and received at CERN Goal: around 0.6 GWh/year (> 90% reduction) End-of-year online meeting Frédérick Bordry 9 15th December 2020
East area renovation F61 Mixed area • Dismantling finished • Beamline re-installation started (F61 finished) • Building 251 installation completed • Electrical non-conformities fully addressed • Individual System Tests started • On schedule for beam late summer 2021 Power Converter Farm End-of-year online meeting Frédérick Bordry 10 15th December 2020

FCC footprint exploration (for 12 suitable surface sites) Since CDR, much detailed input was gathered on „territorial constraints“ CDR placement to be disregarded. Enormous amount of requirements to be respected simultaneously (machine design, geology, urbanistic, environmental, ...). Efficient tool needed to - vary machine and geographical ring parameters and update the resulting positions of 12 access points in real time; - use various base maps and superimpose additional layers (e.g. constraints maps/“sensibility grids”). While using it, underground and transfer line criteria are borne in mind. Following that first step, results are output for further processing (ArcGIS DB, site description/analysis, “micro-optimisation”, …). select bas map and overlays WebApp „FCC Footprint Explorer“ (1500 lines of JavaScript) vary machine and geographical parameters for chosen parameters, the new trace and all point positions are updated in real time traces only for illustration „Assisted pre-search“ (additional SW module varies machine parameters automatically within chosen limits Many scenarios were looked at individually and candidates and outputs candidate scenarios retained for further evaluation and optimisation (collaboration with enough hits in „target zones“ of J. Gutleber, V. Mertens, A.-L. Verdier, Host State bodies). 28 for manual post-optimisation). End-of-year online meeting Frédérick Bordry 15th December 2020 ERC: Eviter Réduire Compenser 28
FLASH radiotherapy: CDR in 2020 An intense beam of electrons is produced in a photoinjector, accelerated to around 100 MeV and then is expanded, shaped and guided to the patient. The design of this facility is the result of an intense dialogue between groups at CHUV and CERN. Jean Bourhis from CHUV: “The clinical need that we have really converges with the technological answer that CERN has.” End-of-year online meeting Frédérick Bordry 29 15th December 2020

Booster – PSB: new main power converter (POPS B) Milestone activity of the PSB HW commissioning carried out : About 6000 A peak current, 3000 V peak voltage and 18 MW peak power. About 7000 kJ stored in capacitors ≈ 2 kg of TNT! Reliability run ongoing: POPS-B and main magnets pulsed more than 270000 times since the beginning of the commissioning. Pulsing at both 1.4 GeV (pre-LS2) and 2.0 GeV (post-LIU) kinetic energies. As a side note, the previous Main Power Supply (MPS) was also resurrected and tested at 1.4 GeV and will serve as emergency backup. Example of different PSB magnetic cycles alternating 1.4 GeV and 2.0 GeV extraction POPS-B installation in the new Building 245 End-of-year online meeting Frédérick Bordry 35 15th December 2020
