Small Business SPOTLIGHT When customers enter Micah Van Signature Home Accents in Concord, they’ll immediately notice the items on display are definitely not found in big-box stores. That’s the way owner Micah Vanderburg wants it. He opened Micah Van in January 2017, but his entrepreneurial mindset was shaped long before then, during a time when he was “a struggling teen, living on my own, paying rent at age 15.” He learned the construction trade right out of high school and as life took an upward turn, built and sold his first house after college “to get out of debt.” As with most young entrepreneurs, Micah kept his focus on the future and knew he wouldn’t always want to do the demanding physical labor of residential construction. He decided, instead, to sell the custom kitchen cabinets, bath vanities, sinks, faucets, tile and other fixtures he’d spent some 25 plus years installing in homes. That’s when he teamed up with business partner Meghann Hasty and reached out to the Small Business Center. “Although I knew construction, I had zero experience in retail. The SBC helped me start the retail operation, gave me a plan of action, a timeline to keep things on track and provided Micah Vanderburg, us with good resources from web design to bookkeeping.” Today Micah focuses on the sales Meghann Hasty, Brooke Ryan side of the business and Meghann handles the operations. And they’ve recently hired their first store employee, Brooke Ryan. Check out their Facebook page to learn more. Please register at www.rccc.edu/sbc to receive online link.
