Ms. Zanski Isabela Arellano Blake Cestone Logan Cestone Isaac Peerman Tiger Tracks Issue 4 Volume 2 May 1, 2019 Tigers Looking for a Stronger Month of Play Blake Cestone The Del Norte Tiger Baseball team struggled in the month April going 3-7 in a 7 game stretch that included three double headers against Sargent, Sanford, and Center. In these double headers the Tigers went 1-5. After an encouraging 12-11 comeback win in the second game against Center on April 27th, the Tigers looked to carry this momentum into their Double Header against South Park May 4. How do you feel about this season so far? “I think we could have won a lot more games if we just believed and had more positivity.” - Garett Benns “ I feel like I have improved a lot.” - Joel Rosales “ We are doing okay I guess, there is still room for improvement.”- Garett Mondragon What could you take away from this season that you could use next season? “Using what we learned in practice and applying that to game situations.” - Garett Benns “ Positivity!” - Joel Rosales “ Just getting better at fielding in the infield.” - Garett Mondragon With a positive outlook on the future, the Del Norte Baseball team looks to have a strong finish Del Norte High School Track Isaac Peerman The Del Norte Track team has been as steady as it was last year in the 2019 season. Logan Cestone has come from not placing in state for the 400 meter dash to being 13th in the state! For the girls, their relay teams have been extremely successful. They have qualified for the 4x800 and have a chance at the 4x400 meter race in state! Pole Vault is looking pretty strong for the girls, as Kaeci Madrid is looking at 7th place with an 8’ 6” jump to hold her off, and Keila is looking at a 10th place with an 8’4” jump. To qualify for state in any event you must place above 18th place to go. Del Nortes track team this year has had a strong start, and won’t give up.
Soccer V, JV Isaac Peerman Del Norte Soccer had a bit of a rough start to the the season, but as it closes in on the end they are working hard and ready to win some games! Let’s talk to Soren Bailey about how the year is going for them “How is this year going for the JV team?” “Um, good, JV has actually improved a lot, the freshman girls are improving a lot more than last year” “How is this year going personally for you?” “Great! This year has been a lot better than last year for me!” “How do you think the next year will go for this team?” “Next year is gonna be tough since we’re graduating so many seniors and a challenge, but it will make more opportunities for our team to improve” Good luck Tigers! Opinion Piece Is Standardized Testing Actually A Benefit? Logan Cestone Around this time of the year schools all across the country start giving the dreaded standardized test. Standardized tests are long, boring, and students really do not see benefit in standardized testing. This begs the question, why do we take these tests? Students already have finals in there classes so why should they have to take another test? Although standardized testing is very time consuming and tedious there are many benefits that come with taking the tests. Standardized tests help pinpoint where students are at in their learning and can help schools evaluate progress. Standardized testing shows schools where there students are at and how they can improve. Standardized tests do possess cons as well. When taking these rigorous tests students could get nervous and not focus as well as usual. Students are under a lot of pressure due to time restrictions and amount of questions which could make the student rush through the questions. This is why standardized testing is not an accurate measurement of a students academic ability.
Columbine High School memorial Isabela Arellano April 20, 1999. On this day 12 students and one teacher lost their lives duye to a school shooting. The shooting happened at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, United States. The two perpetrators injured 21 additional people with gunshots. Another three people were injured trying to escape the school. The incident resulted in the introduction of the Immediate Action Rapid Deployment tactic. This is used when an active shooter is trying to kill people rather than take hostages. Columbine also resulted in an increased emphasis on school security with zero tolerance policies. Despite the safety measures that were put into place due to the tragedy at Columbine, school shootings continued to take place in the United States at an alarming rate. Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and Stoneman Douglas are three school shootings that far eclipsed the terror that took place at Columbine. The History of April Fool’s Day Blake Cestone We all know April Fool’s Day as the classic day of pranks. The day where even the most outrageous of pranks are used the most innocent people. But where did this holiday begin? Actually its origins are unknown. April Fool’s Day or All Fools Day was believed to have been started by the French as early as 1582! The Council of Trent switched their calendars from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar and many were slow to hear the news. They were used to celebrating the New Year on the last week of March through April 1st instead of on January 1st. This lead to many falling victim to pranks such as the “Poisson d’avril”, or ApRil fish, which is a paper fish placed on the back of people to symbolize a young, easily caught fIsh and a gulLible person. While France may be the culprit for starting this day, historians have linked April Fools festivities to Other countries as well such as ROme and ScotLand. According to HiStory.com, Rome celebrated the festival of Hilaria where people would dress up in costumes, and Scotland held a two day event. The first was “hunting the gowk,” in which people were sent on phony errands (gowk is a word for cuckoo bird, a symbol for fool) followed by Tailie Day, which involved pranks played on people such as pinning fake tails or “kick me” signs on them. If that is not silly enough, History.com points out one more crazy idea, “Some even believe that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox, or first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather.” If that is case can someone tell her to stop pranking Del Norte, I’m tired of snow! In short, All Fool’s Day remains a timeless tradition for April 1st and it is still going strong today. In fact, an Australian McDonald’s just pranked their country with a Mcpickle burger! April Fool’s everyone!
