New Malaysia’s Foreign Policy By Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia New Malaysia - a label now popularly used to describe the new Pakatan Harapan Government which took over administration following the May 9 elections - has been carrying out widespread reforms to clean up corruption and restore the people’s trust in government. These reforms have been led by the 7th and current Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad, who was also the country’s 4th Prime Minister, having served from 1981 - 2003. Despite the corrective measures being implemented by New Malaysia, rest assured that there will be no major shift in Wisma Putra’s foreign policy principles. Some “sacred” and fundamental principles will be retained (including among others, Malaysia’s commitment to non-alignment and friendly diplomatic relations with all nations), while new emphasis and greater rigor will be placed on principles that were implemented in the past, but sidelined under the previous administration. These include rejuvenating Malaysia’s proactive role in ASEAN, continuing its “Look East Policy” (with added emphasis on education and human capital development), and revisiting the Langkawi International Dialogue and the South-South Cooperation. Malaysia will also extend regional-based focus to Africa and other developing regions – while not losing sight of relations with major superpowers. New Malaysia will continue to strive for peace and stability through diplomacy with all nations regardless of ideology and political system, especially with its ASEAN neighbors and other like- minded developing nations. Apart from ASEAN, New Malaysia will also seek to rejuvenate its role in the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the United Nations, and other multilateral organizations - especially in efforts to end injustice and oppression and uphold international law. This is especially pertinent to new and emergent concerns like violent extremism, climate change, refugees, human trafficking, terrorism, international and financial crimes and cyber security. These have become global issues that need to be addressed in multilateral forums at global and regional levels. Malaysia will also strive to regain its stature as a leading example of an inclusive and moderate, progressive Muslim-majority nation, predicated on principles of democracy, good governance, freedom, human rights and sustainable development.

13 Visit Mexico ACAPULCO, GUERRERO Acapulco is one of Mexico's oldest coastal tourist destinations, reaching prominence in the 1950s as the place where Hollywood stars and millionaires vacationed on the beach in an exotic locale. The original Acapulco, where hotels like Hotel Los Flamingos, owned by personalities Johnny Weissmuller and John Wayne are located, is on the northern end of the bay. The heyday of this part of Acapulco ran from the late 30s until the 60s. Starting in the late 50s, and with development continuing through the 80s, the main area of Acapulco bay grew into what is known as the Zona Dorada or the Golden Zone. Acapulco's reputation of a high-energy party town and the nightlife have long been draws of the city for tourists. From November to April, luxury liners stop here daily and include ships such as the MS Queen Victoria, the MS Rotterdam, Crystal Harmony, and all the Princess line ships. Another enigmatic attraction at Acapulco are the La Quebrada Cliff Divers. The tradition started in the 1930s when young men casually competed against each other to see who could dive from the highest point into the sea below. Today the divers are professionals, diving from heights of forty meters into an inlet that is only seven meters wide and four meters deep. How to go Acapulco is access able from Mexico City, half an hour via air or three and half hour drive using highways. When to go Acapulco has year-round warm weather, with variations only in the amount of rain and humidity throughout the seasons. The dry season, which runs from November through May, is the tourist season, and prices for hotels, food and tours are at their highest. The rainy season runs from June through October, and during this time, many of the local business and tour operators close, but prices also take a dip. Beaches are less crowded, and tourist hot spots can be enjoyed without the chaos of the high season.
Taste of Mexico RAJAS POBLANAS (POBLANO STRIPS) • 1/2 cup Mexican fresh cream • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened • 1 tablespoon chicken bouillon granules • 5 poblano peppers • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 1 onion, thickly sliced • 1 cup drained canned corn kernels Blend the fresh cream, cream cheese, and chicken bouillon in a blender until smooth; set aside. Place the peppers on a large griddle over medium-high heat. Roast until the skin blisters and turns black. Remove peppers from griddle and place in a plastic bag, allowing them to sweat for 5 minutes. Transfer to a plate to cool. Peel and discard the outer skin of the peppers; halve length-wise and remove the seeds and veins. Slice into thick strips. Set aside. Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat; cook the onion in the hot oil until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir the corn into the onions, reduce the heat to medium, and cook another 5 minutes. Add the poblano strips to the saucepan. Pour the cream mixture over the vegetables and bring to a simmer; cook at a simmer until hot, about 5 minutes. Embassy of Malaysia Mexico City Address: Sierra Nevada 435 Col. Lomas de Chapultepec.
