1 Silent Films in the Meadow City In 1913, Las Vegas welcomed Romaine Fielding, Lubin Films leading actor-director-writer, and producer, and his entire cast and crew with open arms. At the time, Fielding had been voted “The Most Popular Photoplayer in America” by moving picture fans. For the next six months Las Vegas was transformed into a motion picture center complete Courtesy of the City of Las Vegas Museum with studio facilities where sets and stages and locations throughout town, and in Montezuma, would "THE RATTLESNAKE" 1913, Romaine Fielding proliferate in the filming of ten films. One of them (Montezuma Castle in background) “The Golden God,” at a cost of $50,000, was the most expensive film made in the United States that year. Fielding’s name, after all these years, is still visible on 2 the side of the Plaza Hotel (a “Ghost Sign”), which he leased during his stay in Las Vegas. Realizing the economic impact left behind by the Lubin Film company, prompted the Las Vegas Commercial Club (a precursor to the Chamber of Commerce) to produce a national print campaign promoting the town and its environs to major film studios as a location destination. And it worked. In 1915, Ludwig Ilfeld, a prominent Las Vegas merchant, Courtesy of the NM Film Office and his wife traveled to Los Angeles to follow-up on Walle Landenberger Jess Robinson Film Collection, inquiries made by the studios that replied to the ad campaign, and convinced the Selig Polyscope Film "THE GOLDEN GOD" 1913, Romaine Fielding Company to send a location company and their star (Masonic Temple, 518 Douglas Avenue) Call attraction, Tom Mix, to Las Vegas, where they 505-699-6639 to schedule a building tour. produced 20 films.
