NEW ZEA LAND DAIRY TOUR TO IRELAND Incorporating the Pasture Summit June 2020 Sunday June 7 - Tuesday June 23, 2020 ITINERARY
NEW ZEA LAND Sunday 07 June NZST Depart Auckland [Airline meals] Following an event hosted by Ambassador Peter Ryan, the Irish Ambassador to New Zealand, transfer from central AKL at 17:30 to Auckland International Airport. Depart evening from AIA with Emirates at 20:20. Overnight: Flight of 17hr with short stop in Dubai then 8hr flight to Dublin. (Option for people to leave NZ a day or two earlier and enjoy a stopover in Dubai) Monday 08 June GMT+1 Arrive in Dublin, Ireland [Airline meals - D] PM: Arrival in Dublin 12:05 with a day lost on the way. Meet driver/guide and transfer to central Dublin. Catch your breath in Dublin – check in at hotel, then option to transfer to central city – see the Spire, cross over some of the many bridges on the River Liffey, or try a Guinness at the Temple Bar. Dinner at the hotel – get to know your fellow tour members. Overnight: Red Cow Moran Hotel, Dublin Tuesday 09 June Dublin to Cork [B L -] AM: After breakfast, board coach for transfer to Cork (260km). After 1½ hours , visit a 114ha dairy farm with 400 cows in Ballacolla, County Laois run by the Hyland brothers, both of whom have worked in different dairying regions including Holland and New Zealand. David Hyland is 2019/20 President of the Irish Grassland Association. PM: Continue onto Cork. Check into Radisson Blu (Pasture Summit) hotel. Later, take a tour of the Old Jameson Whiskey Distillery, a short drive from the Hotel. Enjoy a tour fully guided tour around the original Midleton Distillery learning about the distilling process. Finish off with a comparative tasting of three whiskies. Return to hotel for Summit registration. Your choice where to dine tonight. Overnight: Radisson Blu Hotel, Cork Wednesday 10 June Pasture Summit [B L D] AM: Pasture Summit – Programme to be announced by Pasture Summit 2020. PM: Pasture Summit. Evening – Pasture Summit banquet (included in tour price) Overnight: Radisson Blu Hotel, Cork Thursday 11 June Pasture Summit [B L -] AM: Pasture Summit – At Moorepark Animal & Grassland Research and Innovation Centre, Fermoy. PM: Pasture Summit - meals part of the Conference package. Overnight: Radisson Blu Hotel, Cork Friday 12 June County Cork [B - -] AM: We check out of the Radisson Blu hotel this morning, before visiting Dennis Finnegan in mid Co. Cork. He’s familiar with NZ farming systems, and has been expanding, now running four farms with a variety of ownership models, running 700 cows. He’s also a Pasture Summit committee member. PM: After lunch visit Kevin McSweeney at Killard, close to Blarney in Co. Cork. A Holstein Friesian herd is run with high genetic worth. Nearby we also visit Blarney Castle, where you can climb the castle to “kiss the Blarney stone”, so that you’ll never be lost for words again. Adjacent, we also visit the “the largest Irish Shop in the world” - the Blarney Woollen Mills, with very good quality Irish goods and gifts. It’s housed in a large heritage mill building dating from the early 1800’s. Check into the very central Clayton Hotel Cork City. Your choice of where to dine tonight – many options close at hand. Overnight: Clayton Hotel Cork City, Central Cork B = Breakfast L = Lunch D = Dinner
NEW ZEA LAND Saturday 13 June North Cork [B L D] AM: After breakfast, walk on foot to visit the English Market in the city nearby. You’ll see an interesting range of high quality local fresh produce housed in a mid-19th century building.Afterwards, head north to visit Mike Bermingham close to Fermoy. He was Grassland Farmer of the Year finalist, with 100 cows, consistently growing 14tDM/ha. Lunch at Corbett Court. PM: In the afternoon, visit Kevin and Margaret Twomey also close to Fermoy, who are running 450 cows on the home farm and 300 cows on four other farms. Kevin is also chairperson of the Teagasc Dairy Stakeholder Group. Return to Cork and later enjoy dinner and entertainment at South County Pub. Overnight: Clayton Hotel Cork City, central Cork Sunday 14 June Sightseeing day – County Kerry [B L -] AM: After breakfast, head west to the attractive small town of Kenmare at the head of Kenmare Bay. Some free time to wander before boarding a small ferry for a charter cruise on the Bay down to the Boathouse Bistro for lunch. PM: After lunch, continue on via scenic Moll’s Gap with great views of MacGillycuddy’s Reeks (a mountain ridgeline), and the Lakes of Killarney to the town of Killarney – there’s plenty of character and history, plus retail opportunities to interest everyone here. After free time in Killarney, return to Cork. Dinner where you choose tonight. Overnight: Clayton Hotel Cork City, central Cork Monday 15 June Moorepark and Lismore [B L D] AM: This morning after checking-out of hotel, head to Moorepark Animal & Grassland Research and Innovation Centre, for a visit hosted by Teagasc especially for the tour group. The visit will cover both aspects in more detail from the Pasture Summit, and some other areas of research and innovation. PM: This afternoon, nearby Shane Maxwell of Moore Hill Farms who milks >1000 crossbred cows on 330ha. After the farm visit, stop in the town of Lismore and see Lismore Cathedral. Continue onto Thurles where we stay for the next two nights. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight: Anner Hotel, Thurles Tuesday 16 June Tipperary [B - -] AM: This morning visit Eddie O’Donnell close to golden in Co. Tipperary. Eddie was 2017 Grassland Farmer of the Year, and milks 300+ cows. PM: Close by we visit Charles Crosse at Kilfeacle. >14tDM/ha is regularly grown here on a milking platform of 88ha. Later we visit the Rock of Cashel, regarded as one of the most important sites of medieval architecture in Europe, with many of the buildings and fortifications on the site dating from the 12th & 13th centuries Return to Thurles, with your choice where to dine tonight. Overnight: Anner Hotel, Thurles Wednesday 17 June Tipperary to Enfield [B L -] AM: For a change of pace, this morning we visit firstly the highly-regarded Fethard Horse Country Experience, a museum which highlights the role of horses in the history and more importantly, the current world class equine industry so important in the region. Then nearby we visit Coolmore Stud, generally regarded as the biggest and best thorough-bred stud in the world. 30 premium stallions and several hundred broodmares are run on 2,800ha, including the renowned stallion Gallileo who serviced 200 mares last northern season for €200,000 per service. PM: At lunchtime, we visit Pat Hennessy, in Athy, Co. Kildare milking over 400 cows, feeding grass or grass silage only, except for about 300kg of dry ration per year. Pat has some familiarity with New Zealand having worked for Synlait in the past. Nearby, we also visit Brendan O’Gorman who since the lifting of quota, has increased his herd from 75 cows to >300 converting some land from arable to dairy. We continue onto Enfield where will stay for the next three nights. Overnight: Johnston Estate Hotel, Enfield B = Breakfast L = Lunch D = Dinner
NEW ZEA LAND Thursday 18 June Co. Roscommon & Longford [B L D] AM: After breakfast, we head west to visit Ed Payne at Hill Top Dairies in Roscommon. He’s a Nuffield scholar running 500 Friesians, having converted from suckler beef and sheep in 2011. He runs both a conventional and once-a-day herd. Late in the morning visit the Strokestown House and the National Famine Museum. Here the tragic story of the mid 19th century social disaster when one million Irish died and one million emigrated, is told. The main cause of the famine was the failure of the potato crops due to blight, and this was exacerbated by the UK Corn Laws which restricted the import of cereals to supplement the food shortfall. PM: This afternoon we visit Mike and son Michael Magan who milk 200 cows at Killashee in Co. Longford. As well as Chair of the Pasture Summit, Mike is Chair of Animal Health Ireland. He was a former Chairman of co-operative Lakeland Dairies, the second largest processor in Ireland processing 1.8B litres of milk annually. Lakeland export to over 80 countries and have operations in the UK and USA as well. A good opportunity on this visit to gain an overview of dairy and the wider agricultural sector in Ireland and how they fit into the global commodity and consumer markets. Also gain an insight into the implication of recent political changes as the UK exits the EU. Overnight: Johnston Estate Hotel, Enfield Friday 19 June Co. Roscommon & Longford [B L D] AM: Today we visit John Clinton, at Carlanstown in Co. Meath. John farms >400 cows, and the family also have dairy interests in Southland, NZ. PM: After lunch in Kells, we are hosted by the Boyne Valley Co-op – a buying-group of dairy farmers from Co. Meath. A group from the co-op members visited New Zealand in 2018 and were therefore keen to engage with this Dairy Exporter Pasture Summit Tour group. We visit two farms with new rotary sheds and barns installed in 2019 by two of the group members, before enjoying some local hospitality and dinner hosted by the co-op. Later return to Enfield. Overnight: Johnston Estate Hotel, Enfield Saturday 20 June Co. Meath to Dublin [B L D] AM: This morning a visit to Trim Castle, the largest Norman Castle in Ireland on the Boyne River, and first lived in early in the 12th century. Head for Dublin, arriving late morning. Visit the Guinness Storehouse which is a fascinating Brewery experience telling the tale of Ireland’s famous beer, with tastings and a rooftop bar. PM: Check into your central hotel with free time in the city centre. Later on, we take a short early evening ride for a final night out at the Merry Ploughboys Pub. Here during dinner they put on a fine show of Irish dance and Celtic music. A great evenings entertainment. Overnight: Riu Gresham Hotel, Dublin Sunday 21 June Dublin to home destinations, or own arrangements [B - -] AM: Free time this morning Dublin for last minute shopping (or continue with your own arrangements, or tours can be arranged by Farm To Farm such as west of Ireland - Galway / Cliffs of Moher, or Northern Ireland – Donegal / Derry / Antrim Coast / Belfast) For those returning to New Zealand, a late morning transfer to Dublin International Airport.
