Programming Information Here is a brief “snapshot” of the curriculum and programming for the Wausau School District Middle Schools. 6th Grade: ● Students will have two periods of math and literacy, and two periods of social studies and science on alternating days. ● Students will have physical education and music exploration every-other-day for the school year. ● Students will have one quarter of business and technology education, one quarter of art, and two quarters of health during the year. ● Students will have an Intervention/Enrichment (IE) period every day, which may include resource time, band, orchestra, specific math and/or literacy interventions, and enrichment opportunity in numerous areas. 7th Grade: ● Students will have two periods of math and literacy, and two periods of social studies and science on alternating days. ● Students will have physical education every-other-day for the school year. ● Students will select elective classes to complement their schedule. ● Students will have an Intervention/Enrichment (IE) period every day, which may include resource time, band, orchestra, specific math and/or literacy interventions, and enrichment opportunity in numerous areas. Some enrichment courses offered in the 2018-2019 school year may require an additional course fee. 8th Grade: ● Students will have two periods of math and literacy, and two periods of social studies and science on alternating days. ● Students will have physical education every-other-day for the school year. ● Students will choose elective courses to complement their schedule. ● Students will have a period to be used for an additional elective course or an Intervention/Enrichment (IE) period every day. The IE period may include resource time, band, orchestra, specific math and/or literacy interventions, and enrichment opportunities in numerous areas. Some enrichment courses offered in the 2018-2019 school year may require an additional course fee. 2
Timeline Elective Sign-Up Process- ● Homeroom Elective Presentations: During the week of January 10th, students will view a short 3-5 minute video explaining the options from each of the allied departments. ● Monday January 17th: a messenger will be sent to families outlining the entire sign-up process. This messenger will also contain links to the homeroom presentations on the school website along with course descriptions. ● Monday January 19th: Students will watch an instructional video on completing their worksheet and completing the sign-up process in Infinite Campus. This will be during TEAM time on the 19th. ○ During the rest of the week, programming will provide teachers with a list of students yet to complete the sign-up process. Students will need to complete their worksheets and teachers will submit the completed worksheets to the programming office. ○ Counseling will also be involved for student contact along with administration to ensure the completion of sign-up by Friday January 21st. ● Friday March 18th: Adjustments to student requests will no longer be taken unless there is a stated academic need or extenuating circumstance presented to administration. ● August - Schedule Pick-up - Students will receive their schedule at a TBD date in August. Important: We will make every attempt to honor as many prioritized elective courses as possible. However, course selections are not guaranteed. Please understand that many factors impact the scheduling process, including each student’s core academic needs, class sizes, staffing, and availability of facilities. Schedule change requests are not honored unless there is an identified academic need for a change of placement. 3
8th GRADE Elective Course Descriptions Art: The unique design of 8th grade Art class is that it keeps the Art student in mind. Whether your passion is Art or you are career minded in Art this class works for you. Eighth grade art is an exciting class exploring a wide variety of media and subject matters. This class focuses on the individual’s creativity and problem solving as you will work two-dimensionally and three-dimensionally. You will explore multiple mediums from paint to clay, and several more exciting art projects. We will explore Art and artists intent from around the world while learning Art history and appreciation. Scheduled every-other-day for a semester Band: 8th Grade HighBANDers! Do you need a break in the school day to move your muscles, challenge your brain, be with your friends, and create something totally awesome?! If so, then you need to join the 8th grade band! In this high-energy and fun class, we will continue to rock out with your previous learning in 6th and 7th grade band, such as technical playing skills, tone production, and expanding our note and rhythmic capacity through music theory. However, participating in the 8th grade band is much more than just learning an instrument: it is also a GREAT place to build friendships, work as a team, and practice important life skills such as time-management, responsibility, and performing in front of other people. The awesome performance opportunities throughout the school year specific to the 8th grade band will include three concerts; one at Wausau West, Pisca’s Army of ROCK, Jazz Band, District Solo and Ensemble Festival, State Honors Ensemble, and the Wisconsin Valley State Honors Band. Let’s get Loud! Scheduled every-other-day for the school year and lessons scheduled during the IE period or music class. Prerequisite: If a student is planning on enrolling in 8th grade band but has no previous experience, the student should speak to the band director as soon as possible as well as complete the six lesson summer school course provided through the District prior to beginning the program or have instructor permission. The summer school lessons are free of charge, though an instrument will need to be rented or purchased. *A purchased or rented instrument is required for participation in band/orchestra. Families may choose to purchase or rent instruments from local music stores. A limited number of instruments are available for rent from the school at a reduced rate for families who qualify. Please contact the band or orchestra instructor for more information. 4
Orchestra: Explore the power of music in eighth grade orchestra! In this grade level, students have the chance to further develop their musical skills and knowledge playing violin, viola, cello or bass, in rehearsals and small group lessons. The course of study in eighth grade orchestra is focused on further advancing technical skills and tone production. Several concerts are held during the course of the school year. Additional topics covered may include music history, music theory, even composing music on your instrument! Other exciting performance opportunities for eighth grade orchestra students include – Chamber Orchestra, District Solo and Ensemble Festival, and Middle Level Honors Orchestra. Full Rehearsals/Sectionals meet on a four-day rotating basis during the Resource period. Choir provides a unique opportunity to sing, to perform, and to build relationships with others in an ensemble setting. We will continue to develop skills in reading music, tone quality, using correct diction and posture, and most importantly, expressing emotion through singing! Choir students are required to perform in two evening concerts. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in the District Solo and Ensemble Festival, and could audition for the Pop/Jazz Choir and Middle Level State Honors Choir. Come and have some fun with us! Scheduled every-other-day for the school year *Seventh grade choir is not a prerequisite. Music Connections: Keyboard Emphasis Let’s make music with Pianos!! Join us for a hands-on approach to learning music!! Making music provides our minds and body an opportunity to learn in a fun and exciting way. In this class, students will learn and perform piano music on keyboards beginning at their own level. This is a course where students are required to be responsible, independent learners. If you want to continue to develop your piano skills, this is the music class for you! Scheduled every-other-day for a semester 5
Music Connections: Guitar Emphasis Let’s make music with Guitars!! Join us for a hands-on approach to learning music!! Making music provides our minds and body an opportunity to learn in a fun and exciting way. In this class, students will learn and perform on guitars beginning at their own level. This is a course where students are required to be responsible, independent learners. If you want to continue to develop your guitar skills, this is the music class for you! Scheduled every-other-day for a semester Family and Consumer Education - Sew What More: The Sew What MORE course is designed to give students additional opportunities to explore machine sewing and project work. Students will continue to use patterns, vocabulary, and sewing tools and techniques to develop new skills as they select a construction project to focus on while gaining more independence with machine work. Students will be allowed the choice of a zippered duffel bag or clothing project. Students signing up for this course should have taken and received a passing grade in Sew What. Scheduled every-other-day for a semester $4.00 Project Fee required Prerequisite Course: Sew What Family and Consumer Education - Cultural Foods: The Cultural Foods course gives students the opportunity to explore and develop understanding and appreciation for various cultural and ethnic groups in our society. Students will focus on the unique differences of African American, Hispanic, Hmong, and American Indian cultural groups. Various celebrations and holidays will be explored as students create dishes that are relevant to each group’s cultural identity. Students should be open to trying these new foods. Students will gain further insight into cooking practices and techniques taught through the Fundamental Foods course by exploring varied recipes and equipment used within each cultural group’s cooking practices. Scheduled every-other-day for a semester $4.00 Lab Fee required 6
Family and Consumer Education - Food and Careers: Food and Careers is a course for students looking to expand knowledge gained about cooking principles and techniques learned in Fundamental Foods. Students will apply techniques practiced in their first foods course to develop additional skills and create new recipes. Students will also spend time exploring the varied careers associated with food and the culinary industry. For each unit completed, students will practice the duties and skills of those professionals in varied food related jobs. Examples can include knife and plating and presentation skills used by a chef. This course requires a high skill base so a student must have signed up for Fundamental Foods and passed, before signing up for Food and Careers. Scheduled every-other-day for a semester $4.00 Lab Fee required Prerequisite Course: Fundamental Foods Global Language - French: This year-long course presents the French language in realistic cultural situations that are part of the French speaking world. Students will develop the vocabulary needed for communicating about friends, school, sports and hobbies, food and cafes, family, and shopping. Students will begin to develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing French. They will have the opportunity to do skits, sample French foods, sing songs and use technology. Students who continue their French studies to level 5 at Wausau West will have the option to take dual credit with the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay. The successful completion of 8th grade French will enable students to progress to level 2 of the language in high school and will also fulfill one year of high school level foreign language. Scheduled every day for the school year Global Language - German: This year-long course presents the German language in realistic cultural situations that are part of the German speaking world. Students will develop the vocabulary needed for communicating about friends, school, sports and hobbies, food and restaurants, family, and shopping. Students will begin to develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing German. They will have the opportunity to do skits, sample German foods, and use technology. The successful completion of 8th grade German will enable students to progress to level 2 of the language in high school and will also fulfill one year of high school level foreign language. Scheduled every day for the school year 7
Global Language - Spanish: This year-long course presents the Spanish language in realistic cultural situations that are part of the Spanish speaking world. Students will develop the vocabulary needed for communicating about friends, school, sports and hobbies, food and restaurants, weather, and family. Students will begin to develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish. They will have the opportunity to do skits, sample Spanish/Mexican foods, and use technology. The successful completion of 8th grade Spanish will enable students to progress to level 2 of the language in high school and will also fulfill one year of high school level foreign language. Scheduled every day for the school year Manufacturing: This is an exciting, real-world, hands-on approach that teaches students the world of high-tech manufacturing. Students will get the opportunity to build and set-up a real world factory that produces a product that they can take home. The factory will be built under the idea of “lean” concepts using automation and a large variety of power tools. For example, students will use the laser cutter, chop saw, router, CNC machine, lathes and Vinyl Cutter. Everyone will have a job someday, and this class will give each student skills they will need to be competitive. This course will be a great intro for Technology classes offered at West High School. Scheduled every-other-day for a semester $4.00 Project Fee Business Education: This course will introduce students to the world of business, marketing, personal finance and entrepreneurship. Students will use a variety of websites and other platforms such as Banzai, Canva and KidzBiz and PBS 2 Cents to complete unit projects based on real-world applications and begin developing the necessary soft skills for successful money management and lucrative business and industry jobs. During this course, Junior Achievement volunteers will lead students through an entrepreneurial project modeled after the popular ABC show, Shark Tank. Students will round out the semester sharpening their interpersonal skills through interview prep and resume writing and will leave the class ready to land their first job! Scheduled every-other-day for a semester S.T.E.M. Innovation & Design Explore the world of Computer Science through the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students will learn the fundamentals of computers, the internet, be tasked with creating an original concept for an app, build their own three page websites and learn about the basics of game design. This class is a great segway for students who can see a future in the area of programming, game design or anything technology 8
related. The content in the class will be aimed toward students with little to no programming experience and all are encouraged to register! Scheduled every-other-day for a semester 9
