Symphonic workshop with tutors from the NZSO

ABOUT
The annual HVO Symphonic Workshops offer wonderful opportunities to play music that is rarely performed
by community orchestras in New Zealand. Recent workshops have included Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony,
Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique and Dvorak’s Symphony no 8 with Verdi Force of Destiny Overture.
The workshop this year will conducted by our musical director Mark Carter. Mark was born in Dorset, UK. He
studied Trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Whilst at the Academy Mark studied conducting
and participated in master-classes with George Hurst, Sir Colin Davis and Sir Simon Rattle. Mark has been sub-
principal trumpet of the NZSO since 1996. During his time in NZ he has conducted the Nelson Symphony
Orchestra, Manawatu Symphony Orchestra, Wellington Youth Orchestra and Stroma Contemporary Music
ensemble. He is also an artist teacher at the New Zealand School of Music Victoria University. Mark is a very
keen mountain biker and enjoys exploring New Zealand's great outdoors.
We will be joined by players from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Wellington who will
tutor the individual sections of the orchestra. Tuition will be tailored to help players of all abilities. Year after
year we receive very positive feedback saying how enjoyable and engaging the tutors were.

From Mark Carter: “After the success of last year’s workshop and how rewarding Dvorak Symphony No. 8 was
to play, we have chosen Dvorak Symphony No. 9. Known as “The New World Symphony”, this is probably
Dvorak’s most famous and most performed work. Last year the inclusion of an Overture received positive
feed-back, so this year we are also including the Overture to the comic opera ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor”
by Nicolai. I’m sure that you will find these two achievable works very challenging and rewarding to workshop
and perform”.
