Interact Club of Riverside High School By Sharon Kay Lassiter on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 INTERACT CLUB OF RIVERSIDE HIGH SCHOOL!
Did you know our club supports an Interact Club? Students at Riverside High School have had a busy year packaging diapers for the Diaper Bank, contributing hand-written notes of support for the Alzheimer's Caregiver's luncheon, and putting in some sweat equity at the HUB farm! All this while juggling school work, covid restrictions, and extracurricular activities like music and swimming. These impressive students celebrated their achievements with pizza and cookies after participating in APS's Walk for The Animals this past Saturday, May 28 on Duke's East Campus. Advisors Newman Aguiar and Jenny Levine have been supporting these students all year and proudly inducted new executive leadership for the upcoming school year. Great job, Pirates! This Event Is Rescheduled From 5.21.2022 To 6.11.2022! A Message From DCI DCI has made the decision to reschedule our groundbreaking Day of Service Event from this Saturday, May 21, 2022 to Saturday, June 11, 2022. Due to anticipated high heat index and a delay in delivery/securing of materials, we needed to make this call. We really hope the Rotarians who signed up can still join us on June 11! We'll be shifting the time earlier in the day to beat the heat on the 11th, but the location and activities will be the same. The Sign-Up Genius has been adjusted with the new date and time and everyone who had already signed up has been alerted. The link to sign up remains the same: bit.ly/LEAPDCI. [Original Message Below]: DCI will celebrate the completion of another school year at our DCI LEAP Academy in East Durham. On that day, we will break ground on the first phase of our outdoor learning lab. Our Pre-K students and staff are working to design learning elements that will allow them to learn in engaging and safe outdoor spaces, and we want your help as we start to make those spaces into reality. In addition to installing things like raised garden beds and weather stations, we’ll be doing fun and creative outdoor art installations as well. People of all ages and abilities are welcome to join, celebrate and contribute.

Weekly Rotary Meeting -- 6.13.2022 Guest Speaker: Christine Drea By Sharon Kay Lassiter on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 Durham Rotary Club Weekly Monday Meeting Monday, 6.13.2022 -- 12:30 p.m. -- 1:30 p.m. Durham Bulls PNC Triangle Club, 3rd Floor Guest Speaker: Christine Drea, Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University Professor In The Department of Evolutionary Anthropology Presentation Topic: Biological Aspects of Matriarchy
CHRISTINE DREA has two broad research interests, sexual differentiation and social behavior, both focused on hyenas and primates. I am particularly interested in unusual species in which the females display a suite of masculinized characteristics, including male- like or exaggerated external genitalia and social dominance. The study of naturally occurring hormones in such unique mammals can reveal general processes of hormonal activity, expressed in genital morphology, reproductive development, and social behavior. Taking a combined laboratory and field approach allows me to relate captive data to various facets of the animals' natural habitat, thereby enhancing the ecological validity of assay procedures and enriching interpretation in an evolutionary framework. The goal of comparative studies of hyenas and lemurs is to help elucidate the mechanisms of mammalian sexual differentiation. My research program in social behavior focuses on social learning and group cohesion. Using naturalistic tasks that I present to captive animals in socially relevant contexts, I can investigate how social interaction modulates behavior, problem- solving, and cognitive performance. By studying and comparing models of carnivore and primate foraging, I can better understand how group-living animals modify their actions to meet environmental demands. A primary interest is determining whether similar factors, related to having a complex social organization, influence learning and performance across taxonomic groups. I am also interested in how animals learn rules of social conduct and maintain social cohesion, as evidenced by their patterns of behavioral developmental, the intricate balance between aggression and play, the expression of scent marking, and the social facilitation or inhibition of behavior.
